So, if you weren't aware, a lot of reddit has been leaving reddit to come here. Any advice for us newbies? Also what are your thoughts on all of us redditors joining you?
New redditors, what are your thoughts on hubski, and any other questions you have for the seasoned hubski users?
I haven't been here long enough to be considered a seasoned user, and I wasn't a redditor in a previous life, so I can't answer any of those questions. I'm just going to link to the primer page because you probably haven't read it and it contains useful advice for newbies.
Most people here are or were active on Reddit. I'd say most everyone is comfortable with the few Reddit waves we get every year. The biannual Reddit wave used to cause a panic but I think most people are used to it by now. Post some stuff you think is interesting, comment where you think you have something to say. Follow the people who you find you keep running into. Some people follow tags but I haven't found it very edifying. You could follow no one and nothing and get just about as much out of the site. For me following just helps me keep track of and notice conversations and content that I'm more likely to enjoy. I like to click the time button up top to see what's new more than I like to see what's popular. It's worth hitting the community button to see the most popular comments and posts of the day.
Yeah, I'd say you're seasoned.Member for 1619 days
Newbie here, enjoying everyone so far. The posts here seem to be about 10x longer than on reddit and actually on topic instead of always ending up talking about OP's mom. The only question I have is how the wheel thing works. The primer page says that it sort of fills itself up once people share your stuff. I'm a little unclear on the exact mechanics of the system, though.
The wheel thing in the top-left? I think it goes up by 1 every time a hubwheel on your comment(s) gets clicked 8 times, and when it goes around you get one token which can be given to posts you appreciate, like Reddit gold. As far as I'm aware, it does not actually do anything when you're token'd except allow you to token someone else. The only question I have is how the wheel thing works.
The first thing you have to realize is Hubski isn't a reddit clone. It's like if reddit and twitter were combined in a pretty cool way. You just jump into topics via hashtags and can choose to follow them. You are also free to use your own hashtags and see if they catch on. Beyond that, you can follow users as well, and see everything they post or like, effectively acting as a retweet.
didyouknow is something I occasionally post to help new users catch a glimpse of what we do around here. Welcome! I'm at the pool with the fam, but feel free to PM me with any questions and I'll be sure to get to it later. As for how I feel about you all coming over? I love it. We all found this site one way or another. Without people, Hubski is just some code. Glad to meet you all!
And everything is such high quality too. I just wish I knew what the damn wheel means...
I think, and I hope I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, it's effectively how visible something is, influenced by shares etc.
I have a question! Well, two questions, actually. How do the comments get sorted in the threads, what decides what comment is first? And the same for my feed, how are the posts sorted?
