I'm a huge fan! I was introduced to them by Walter Murch at film school as an example of good editing practice.
They're excellent. And so surprising. Real-life is way less predictable than screenplays. I didn't find them depressing at all, Grendel - I actually found a lot of it really uplifting. But then I do have quite weird taste in films.
OK, a little melancholy happened. But the beautiful, life-affirming kind, not the depressing kind! :)

Well said
I had a developmental psychology class in college where we watched parts of the British films and parts of the American films. It was a very interesting experience and caused me to reflect on my own past and speculate about what happened to all the people I used to know. I just watched the film Boyhood and kept wanting to view it as a documentary, I assumed this was just because it was filmed over such a long period of time with he same actors. However, It probably unconsciously reminded me of the Up series now that I think about it.
I've been wanting to see Boyhood too. There were a number of times when I tried to go see it but work or life kept getting in the way. Unfortunately, its no longer in theaters. Is it available to rent now?
I've seen two of these so far and am slowly progressing through all of them when I get bored. Fortunately they're all on Netflix. Longitudinal studies are a very interesting thing.
Yeah, my wife and I used to wait, anxiously for the netflix red envelope to bring us the next episode of "Up." It was neat when a new "edition" of them came out. It will be sad when they stop making them.
I think I heard about this when 56 up came out. I think i'll give it a look.
You really ought to, I bet you would enjoy it. It's at the top of the list of films I suggest to people that aren't idiots. You certainly qualify.
I didn't find it depressing at all, I thought it was extremely fascinating. Things don't always shake out the way you think they might. However, that said it was an interesting look into how someone's birth circumstance is a great predictor of their life outcome.
Sure it does, there are a lot of things in life that bother me but that doesn't mean that watching a sociological film about them makes me depressed. Read about the film, logistically it's a miracle it exists. If you're not interested, don't watch it, but it shouldn't be because you're afraid of being depressed.
