I have always wondered what exactly a film director does all day!

It's all well and good to say "hire the best actors" and then say "if they aren't working out, fire them" when you are Woody Allen. When your some nobody up and coming director and you find yourself lucky enough to pull an A-list actor on to your project, the luxury to fire at will isn't an option. This is also analogous to a business that is small but promising, you can attract some A level talent but you will need to coddle them more than you would if you were say... Woody Allen Inc.
Allen is a rarity, he's a director that is likely more famous than any actor he employs.
