"Your post has been carded by so-and-so!" sounds like Mafia Wars spam though :), I suppose 'shared' or even 're-shared' would work.

One issue I can see being: what if the person updates the post? To avoid things being spammed I think you'd have to record the relationship in the database and have a boolean store if the other user has been notified -- this should persist across edits, so even if it gets removed and re-added it does not trigger another notification.

Wouldn't it just work like someone mentioning you? In your notifications it would just show you where your post was mentioned?

Cedar  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

And if you have email notifications on? :P

But yes, ideally that is how it would be presented. Like I said, the main issue is you'd have to track these cards to make sure you're not spamming users and that the feature doesn't get abused. For example, what happens if someone makes a post with 100 others embedded? Is that possible? What if it's all the posts of one user, would it notify and email them 100 times?

What is to stop someone currently from spamming the function of the shout-out? I mean the only real difference with the card thing is you are been provided a little context as to why you are being brought up in another conversation right?

Cedar  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

I would hope the shout-out system has some form of protection in place, again to me this would be some relationships table somewhere saying this post mentions this user and a boolean saying if a notification has been sent.

Let's try Cedar War Cedar War.

Well wasn't that interesting! It sent me two notifications, but updating the post even to the point of removing and re-adding the mentions in a different order did not trigger new notifications.

It's odd I had the orange hub wheel, but when I clicked it I didn't have any notification. Mind mentioning me again?

Cedar  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

I just found out something interesting War! If you dismiss one notification it dismisses the other duplicates War!

War  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

Wait, so if you tagged me like 100 times in a post I would have a hundred notifications, and if I had email notification on would it send me 100 individual emails?

If all goes well couldn't the card mention work the same way as those mentions?

Oh I should've mentioned this months ago, or maybe I put it insom's super special spreadsheet I can't remember.

insomniasexx  ·  3416 days ago  ·  link  ·

I think it is on the spreadsheet. It's on the list (again)... It's just one of those super low priority things that kept being put off.

I think mk is actually on it now.

steve  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

This is a great catch. mk have you seen this?

Cedar  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

Don't worry, I've shouted him out and on my #bugski post. I know there's more suitable admins that I could shoutout but I do not know who they would be. Maybe insomniasexx would know.

War  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

Well, that was interesting, but I've never (nor do I foresee) that being abused.

Cedar  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

Oh it will be.

The problem here is that you can force Hubski into sending too many emails, this may exhaust any mail allocation that the server has but more likely will get Hubski blacklisted as spam -- blocking new users from signing up as they can't verify their accounts etc and incurring financial expenses to mk as he'll have a rough time getting un-blacklisted.

I wonder what happens if a post is later edited to have a mention.

Like this said Cedar, before receiving a notification.

tehstone  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

The issue with calling it a share is that circle-dotting a post shares it with your followers, so there's already an action called share.

steve  ·  3417 days ago  ·  link  ·

Cards! right! I forgot. Thanks!
