I just got myself a blender! Never had one before. It's one of those blenders where you can twist a cap on the blend cup to make it a drinking cup.
To give it a try, I threw a bunch of berries (rasp-, straw- and blueberry), some milk and a bit of syrup to sweeten it. I figured you guys might know a good recipe or two. Doesn't have to be fruit smoothie per se - I also would love to make a good iced coffee with this.
1 cup iced coffee 1/4 cup milk 1/2 cup rum Am I doing this right?
I dunno, there's an awful lot of milk in there.
This thread is making my mouth water. I want to get into smoothies now.
First of all HOW DAER U But seriously, you need some fiber in a smoothie if you're going to consume them regularly. Otherwise you're just getting huge sugar boosts which are not good for ones long term pancreatic/digestive health. Fine, no kale, but spinach is super mild tasting and other than the color you can put a half cup or more into most smoothies and not notice the taste. Also, kale is gross. Don't ruin smoothies with kale.
I make one smoothie. I make it almost every morning. I make it well, I make it consistently. I've been spending a year or so figuring out how to make the best kale smoothie I can - how to break down the kale well, how to balance out the flavors. I find that the two most important flavors to add to the kale are sweetness and a citric component. So, here's how I do it. This is all done with a Nutribullet because it's what I've got, not sure what the actual measurements are, I just do it all visually. Smoothie-oothie-ooth 1. Grab you some kale. It should be cold. If possible, it should be de-stemmed, though I don't consider that essential. Grab enough to fill the large nutribullet container halfway, loosely packed. Add water to cover the kale. 2. Blend this for about a minute. This is the part where you just beat the shit out of the kale to get it to your desired consistency - for me, the smoother and more finely processed, the better. Optional step: sometimes I add almonds to this. I do it at this point, and blend like a motherfucker. Nothing worse in a smoothie than choking on grainy almond meal. 3. Add the remaining components: 1 frozen banana, preferably halfed. 2-3 large frozen strawberries - I don't like to add much more than this, but I do like the tartness that they add. 5 or 6 frozen pineapple chunks - this is the essential part. I find pineapple to be the ideal citric fruit to balance out the kale. If you're going to skip any part of this recipe, make it the strawberry. The banana and pineapple are, IMO, essential. 4. Add some water and blend. The amount of water added is up to taste - I like smoothies with a bit of thickness to them, but still easily drinkable. -------- Optional changes: swap kale out for spinach, though I find this to make the smoothie too...frothy. I'm also a slow drinker, and I find that there is more separation between the solid/liquid components with spinach, leading to me just drinking some solid leaves. Add almond milk instead of water. I don't love the taste of this personally, and would add more pineapple to counteract the added basic taste.
I worked at a smoothie shop for a few years, and by far my favorite was a mango green tea smoothie. I don't recall the exact ratio of ingredients, but it included thawed frozen mango, matcha powder, water, some of your sweetener of choice to your level of preference (mine is typically very low), ice if your blender can handle it, milk or yogurt if it can't. We did also make a coffee-style smoothie, but the owners insisted on using instant coffee powder. Same thing pretty much, a little water or milk or both, sweetener if you like it, coffee (the stronger the better), and ice. A lot of folks ordered it with chocolate syrup as a mocha style. These days I like to toss in some chia seeds or protein powder for thickener. You can even use silken tofu for some filling protein, if you're using it as a meal replacement.
Following this to steal all the good recipes. I just got a WMF blender from my sister that doesn't need it anymore and we have been trying out some stuff. No specific favorite yet. One nice mix is using a Mate drink (like Club Mate, do you have that stuff in the US?) and apple juice as a base liquid. Try it!
NO WE DON'T REALLY HAVE CLUB MATE. I mean we kinda do - but it's at 5-6$ a bottle. I legit looked into importing to Canada after I tried it in Germany and realized it's the superior drink. We have some off brand stuff, but I find the taste too sweet compared to the original. The problem is some old dude bought the distribution rights for the whole Canada and over-charges like crazy. So nobody buys and it's a dead end. I swear this drink has crazy potential in cities like Montreal with the right marketing but that dude's website look like it's from the 1990s and I bet he doesn't even have any in stock because he requires a min quantity of a container... It's been a huge bummer :(
We have Brisk Mate now though! Or at least we do in the southern US, might be worth looking for for you. It's not the same as Club Mate obviously (which Ive only found once at this weird ass gas station by my old school) but it is still a Mate-based energy drink thing.
Thanks for the offer! Shipping to Canada is expensive - and we've found a place near New York City where we can buy a case of 24 for about 120$ USD. It's not the cheapest but it's the best I'll probably get in North America (believe me, I considered most options. I don't know why I'm so obsessed with this drink). We stock up whenever we pass by!
The smoothie I make: 1 frozen banana 1 handful berries (fresh or frozen) A few big spoons of unsweetened yogurt Add any other fruits or vegetables I feel like. The frozen banana make it thicker, and adds enough sweetness. I as enough yogurt so I can taste the tanginess.
I combine vanilla ice cream, greek yogurt, protein powder, and whatever fruit i have laying around that's about to go bad. Tastes delicious, although I should probably cut back on the ice cream.
