I know this is kind of late - I caught it in my Hacker Newsletter and found it super interesting though. Plus I like the author's blunt-as-fuck style. :)
The picture of Neil taken immediately after his moonwalk is incredible. The images of Neil and Buzz during the walk are equally so, but after seeing them so many times they have lost some of their emotional weight to me. When I see the image of Neil without his helmet all I can think is, holy shit, we actually did it.
I guarantee that the Aldrin photo was used in small papers across the country. The Life and Sciences museum in Durham has some of the space suits worn and shows their progression over the years. How could you not see Neil and Buzz in those suits and not want to grow up to be an astronaut?
I remember going to Cape Canaveral as a kid under the delusion that there would be simulators that would let me float weightless for a few minutes. All the dehydrated space ice cream i ate didn't quite make up for that disappointment. Still, touring Nasa's facilities there was one of those defining times in my childhood that ignited my imagination.
I was just awestruck looking at the unedited photo of Buzz.
