I'm pretty sure this has been mentioned before by someone, but I'm still not sure how it is regarded as here.
The timeliness that mk feels is unnecessary, seems to encourage necroposting more, which would be quite interesting. Most forums and other community-websites absolutely hate necro-posting. In reddit it's just ineffective, since the post will never be seen.
Personally I think necroposting can be a good thing. Maybe a way to see if there's any new posts since a long time like RES does with comment threads would make it easier to see if a thread is being necroposted.
define:necroposting A common trait of someone necroposting is not to only bring one old thread back from the last page before deletion, but to fill up the entire first page with threads that only they seem to think have relevance to anything. The act of posting in a forum thread that is too old to matter any more, or has served it's purpose.
Usually by new, inexperienced members of the board.
Specifically, the
bit intrigues me. Hubski is encouraging thoughtful discussion. Thus, technically speaking, shouldn't ANY post continue to be relevant and serve a purpose, if it produces interesting or intelligent discussion? That is to say, as long as the new posts aren't "lol" or "liked!" or whatever (though in my short time here I've noticed none of that going around which is a lovely thing.)thread that is too old to matter any more, or has served it's purpose
Agreed- if someone is interested in it, it should be seen! And since there's no reposting, there should be a way to "bring something up"
I wouldn't mind it if people who I follow are necroposting, I care what they have to say, usually, but this would go under the category of whether or not hubski should allow more fine-grained controls when it comes to following (And ignoring). Do I follow their posts? Their shares? Their comments? Their necrocomments?
There are some modifications coming to ignoring shortly. Also, as b_b mentioned there is a change to the feed algorithm coming. I am not opposed to necroposting if it is picking up on a good discussion. Both the change to ignores and the new algorithm should play into each other in this respect.
b_b has been working on an algorithm that should allow active posts, regardless of age to be visible in feeds.
I once had a blog that wasn't a free-standing site. I wrote funny short stories and posted them as necrocomments on ooooooooooold blog posts that belonged to other people. I don't know if anyone read a single one of them! Ah, insomnia and the things I do!
Technical Q for the great unwashed (as in ME): Say there exists a necropost and one of my running people necrocomments on it. Does it then show up in my feed? Otherwise I have no idea how to find said posts/comments.
I'm aware of the irony if posting in this thread some 30+ days after it was posted, but I just want to say that I wished people would "necropost" more in Hubski. There are some great old posts and discussions worth revisiting, for sure.
It depends more on what's already submitted, though. For example, the #gaming tag has submissions at least a few days old, yet it's interesting stuff that might warrant at least a conversation, if not a real discussion. Besides, it's not even that easy to tell when a submission was made if you're looking at the list and not the page details. This is going to sound extremely petty, but the extra click you have to make to view the "submission details" is too much of a hassle sometimes, especially considering it's set at the other end of the title/description/tag/whatever. One part is on the left, the other all the way over on the right, it's not... ergonomic.
