When I was in high school, there was girl that was really into a comic series called "Elf Quest". She also had a poster on her bedroom wall of Gandolf. -She was cool.

She was also beautiful and was on the "Pom" team (not cheerleading, she gets mad when you say she was a cheerleader, she was on "Pom"... still not sure what the difference is.) -point is, she was a high school anomaly, a sic-fi/fantasy girl that was also pretty.

As her "friend", she wanted me to know "Elf Quest" too and I would go over to her house and read the series with her a couple nights a week.

I definitely had visions beyond reading elf quest :) ... they didn't materialize. What DID materialize was a great friendship and a love for the genre of fantasy and science fiction. After that, I read the Hobbit/LOR series... several times.

So, my love for the genre started with my love for a cheerleader... I mean "POM" girl. -I remain good friends with her to this date, in fact in a couple of months I'm playing guitar in her wedding.... it's the least I can do for introducing me to a world of fiction I might have missed out on.

For fantasy my favourite is Gene Wolfe's 'The Book of the New Sun' series. For SciFi, 'Dune' amd the 'Hyperion Cantos', also loved 'Cryptonomicon', but I'm not sure what genre that book falls into, 'nerdcore' maybe?

Girls make us do strange things. I even went as far as pretending to like sushi for this one girl. Just like you, I didn't get what I wanted, but I did discover a love for sushi. :)

Ha. I'll see your "Sushi" and raise you, "the Bridges of Madison County". -I once read it for a girl. -This time it worked though :)

You left out the part where you were left with a new love for 'The Bridges of Madison County'...

...it was implied.
