This was one of the best "bad" reviews I've ever read. The review itself is so well written that I actually want to hear lulu just to be in on the punchlines.

Thanks to bgood79 I actually got the Big Star reference.

As for mk calling Lou Reed "woefully over-rated", I think there is some truth in that... but then I remember this:

Ignore the old dude that will jump on any stage with the flavor of the moment and cover Sweet Jane with them and then he's not so bad.

A lot of it is on youtube already:

There's something about it I really like, just because it's terrible probably but they just though 'fuck it, we're doing it'.

The three VU songs you picked are probably the ones that reinforce what I dislike about them the most. Just not doing it for me.

Yes, this is so bad it's good. It seems like a practical joke and must enrage hard core Metallica fans.

Thanks for the link. I understand your feelings about VU. I'm not a big enough fan to try and defend them. To me they've always just been...."meh". I do find humor in the fact that their song "Heroine" was one of my favorites when I was 12 years old. I used to play it in my room all the time. -my parents must have been concerned. I doubt I had any idea what heroine was, really.

Actually, I'd submit those songs as evidence that Lou is over-rated. They are ok songs, but there's nothing really special about them. If it weren't for Warhol, I don't think anything would have come of The Velvet Underground and thus, Lou Reed.

I think there's so much 'importance' surrounding that band and Reed, that it obscures the fact there isn't much else.

Like I said, "I think there is some truth" in saying he is overrated. I'm not a huge fan and I don't find him to be enormously influential. But, I do love all of those songs I linked to and I disagree that without Warhol there is no Velvet Underground. Is he overrated? Yes. Does he deserve some acclaim for writing and recording some great music? Yes. That's about where I stand regarding Lou Reed. In my opinion, the most overrated band of all time is the Doors.

Wow. I'm no Doors fan, but I think Jim Morrison is heads and tails above Lou Reed. Just the phrase 'Mr. Mojo Risin' almost does that for me. :)

He is definitely, definitely heads and tails above Lou Reed.... but he is also WAY more celebrated. I'm also talking about the Doors and not just Jim Morrison. Morrison is a figure that stems beyond the music he wrote. The celebration of the music the Doors made has benefited greatly from the lore of Morrison. Without his persona, based solely on the music, it is my opinion that they are hugely overrated. This from someone that grew up listening to them a lot.

Yeah, I am down with that assessment.
