Actually, I'd submit those songs as evidence that Lou is over-rated. They are ok songs, but there's nothing really special about them. If it weren't for Warhol, I don't think anything would have come of The Velvet Underground and thus, Lou Reed.
I think there's so much 'importance' surrounding that band and Reed, that it obscures the fact there isn't much else.

Like I said, "I think there is some truth" in saying he is overrated. I'm not a huge fan and I don't find him to be enormously influential. But, I do love all of those songs I linked to and I disagree that without Warhol there is no Velvet Underground. Is he overrated? Yes. Does he deserve some acclaim for writing and recording some great music? Yes. That's about where I stand regarding Lou Reed.
In my opinion, the most overrated band of all time is the Doors.

He is definitely, definitely heads and tails above Lou Reed.... but he is also WAY more celebrated. I'm also talking about the Doors and not just Jim Morrison. Morrison is a figure that stems beyond the music he wrote. The celebration of the music the Doors made has benefited greatly from the lore of Morrison. Without his persona, based solely on the music, it is my opinion that they are hugely overrated. This from someone that grew up listening to them a lot.
