If you buy a microwave, you pretty much can get a basic shitty plastic one that will die in a few years, or an expensive one with brushed aluminum and a flight deck control panel. I want a very basic but very well-made microwave.

Yeah absolutely. The middle seems to have been eroded quite a bit. I bought a Fed 3 camera the other day for £20. It's built like a brick though, and it's 40 years old but still going, whereas you see new digital pocket cameras failing all around. The kind of built in obsolescence is both infuriating and useful as it gives access to products that were prohibitively expensive before. It's a shame about the waste though.

I think the main example is printers. My friend needed to print something last minute late at night and just went to the 24h supermarket to get a new printer because it was cheaper than buying cartridges for the one he already had. Madness.
