Mine is to not freak out over small things anymore but try not only to weigh the situation logically, but if I feel like I'm in a catch 22 (which could entirely be a product of my own mind) to just simply take the option that gives me the most peace. I try to be definite in my decisions but I've noticed that once I make a decision in peace, often about like 10 minutes later I'll have more clarity to then allow things to progress. As in, I am allowed to change my mind. I don't set hard and fast rules like if I make a decision I have to stick to it at all costs - that would only stress me out. Taking away that pressure has helped me a LOT. I've slipped up, but am always trying and so far things have been pretty good :)
Hey thanks caelum :) I'll be sure to check those sources out. Thanks for putting me onto the technique of scroll-clicking. Yeah, I think it can be both dishonest as well as not putting pressure on people, depending on the circumstances/ person I guess. It was an example of someone doing it overtly, just so I could get across the idea.
I'd like to take this opportunity to be perfectly honest. There was an ask reddit thread that asked why lurkers lurked and I really wanted to say it then, but, given my lurkeryness, didn't. For me it takes quite a lot to build up the courage to comment. I'm just too paranoid of saying the wrong thing and having the excitement of someone replying snatched away with hate mail. I'll usually try to be as neutral as possible. I usually only ask for help on audio engineering and edm subreddits and gearslutz, only when I'm in a real fix. Expressing any part of my personality freaks me out, so i try to stick with the raw data. Even saying "lurkeryness" as a relaxed form of slang is a little unnerving. But I quite like hubski. For some reason I feel more relaxed around you guys. Although, it has been a while since I last posted here, life just got in the way. I also get distracted very easily, and find it difficult to properly finish a train of thought. I think of tonnes of things all at once then try to connect everything then and there and it gets overwhelming. I've tried keeping a blog several times. Maybe one day it will work. Finally, I mostly use aggregators for news, so I'm happy just scrolling through. Anyway, I'm going to try and come out of my shell a bit more :)
This looks interesting. Also a very cool looking site. thanks for posting :)
The same thing was said about LOTR, but I think Jackson did a pretty good job at capturing the main essence of the plot while condensing it into an 11 hr viewing session for all 3. Compare that to an audio book of the fellowship of the ring, which is made up of three parts each lasting about 10 hrs, mostly because of the detail Tolkien uses, and you have an entire trilogy of feature length films lasting about the same time as part 1 of the fellowship of the ring. Because of the same thing, more detail. It would take a considerable amount of thought to take the significant parts of the manga (or books) and condense them into a single (or trilogy of) film(s). And to use creative license to change the story a little if a significant part of the plot is running too long, or goes a few seasons down a secondary plot or something. Sorry, mostly speculating now. Anyway, I too would love to read the manga then re-watch the movie to see how well the director did this. So thanks for the link! That looks like a great site, I can't believe I never thought to search for something like that before...
That's true, thanks :) Here is the article that was discussed before: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/hide-and-seek/201410/the-perils-and-privileges-loneliness And I did enjoy that discussion. I was just wondering if there was a psychology website with more of an academic focus, that's all. I don't want to sound like I'm tooting my own horn here, I actually find some academic papers quite challenging to read. But I like the challenge, and if there's anything like that out there I'd love to check it out, that's all.
Thanks lil, I appreciate your thoughts on this :) I think yours and _refugee_'s comments tie in well together and I agree - I think this article is over-generalized, which like _refugee_ said is perhaps a good thing as an introduction to the topic/concept, but it doesn't go much further than that. His views are overtly biased which seems to serve his purpose for making a snappy point in a magazine-style article. And it did make me prick my ears, which, scrolling through endless amounts of links and articles these days is quite rare (unfortunately). haha yeah, his Chekhov quote did dampen my spirits for a while, especially used the way it is at the end of his paragraph about how common it is for people to feel lonely in marriage! But I respect his craftmanship as a writer. And thanks guys for commenting with such awesome feedback. I'm really loving hubski. When I was having my little rant about the portrayal of marriage up there a voice in my head was like "woah, dude, don't express your opinion! You'll get torn to shreds!" but then a second one chimed in and said "wait a sec, this is hubski" :) the second one was right.
I've actually been mulling this over myself. It's weird, I can't seem to narrow any experience down to something black and white. A dictionary definition puts it down to pardoning an offence, and even to give up all claim on account of; remit (a debt, obligation, etc.) I like that second one. I like the idea that if I need to forgive another person for something they've done to me, forgiveness itself is the act of me taking away my claim to holding that offence to them. Taking away my (perceived) right to hold them un-forgiveness -- and basically releasing them from that, so that in the end you're back to being equal. I hope that makes sense. I suppose forgiving yourself is practically the same thing, releasing yourself from the thing you hold yourself in un-forgiveness of. Thanks for bringing this up, OP :)
That's very interesting, thank you. Does that by any chance mean that theoretical mathematicians view real things as being shadows cast by math?
a LOT of these could be band names...
Is this similar to theoretical math vs. applied math?
That's an interesting thought. I was going to say that I would have found it hard to draw parallels to retro games, but the more I think about it, the more I feel they have to be out there, right? I for one don't mind that it's really only the format of the presentation that's in 8-bit style. It's holding my attention, so for me it's working.
My housemate showed me that, it is hilarious! I seem to remember him offering poems in the early stages of pledges, but I can't seem to find it again. Come to think of it, poetry is often used as bargaining leverage on the internet.. I've seen elsewhere people promising poetry in return for a oneplus one invite. If it's a profitable form of currency, hubski could do well. We have some great poets here I've seen :) Oh I just re-read that and realized the amount of alliteration that's in there. Irony. Puns. Sorry. Tired.
VICTOR WOOTEN IS HIS BASS PLAYER?!?! Woah! I'm so there. Thanks, I didn't know he was a jazz musician, thanks for mentioning that.
thanks!
that is a really great idea, keep it up, I'd love to see more :) p.s. they would fill a book nicely, and that would be a book I'd definitely buy.
Oh cool! The only thing up until recently that I'd seen of his was his journey through Africa to find where and what the banjo originated from, just had to google it then and it's called 'Throw down your heart', really really awesome documentary, and he plays with so many people too - here's a youtube link to one: this is the trailer for the tour:
