Hello all! While delta was working on doing a Hubski Digital Music Swap, AdSeriatim made this comment.
I really liked his (or her!) idea, so I figured we could do something with it! Hence, the Hubski Music Club!
My idea is this: In this post, I'd like to get a list of genres of music that people like. Along with that, who would want to (or could) lead which music club, as well as how often you'd want to do the club (weekly or monthly). Then, there could be a music club for each genre.
For example, I'd like to lead the HipHop Music Club. So the post would be:
Hubski HipHop Album Club: [Name of Album]
tag 1: #musicclub tag 2: #hiphop
Then that post would be dedicated to discussion of the album. We could even switch who leads on any given week or month, which I think would be good to inspire variety within each particular genre club.
Let me know what you think, suggestions, comments, if there's interest or lack thereof, etc!
Thanks for reading!
Edit: there's been some discussion on the issue of genre being murky. This is a great point and more discussion is welcome.
I'm proposing a second idea. Perhaps we could get a list of people interested to lead. Then, when that person comes up, they pick their album that we should discuss. People can join that week based on interest. The pro of this is that genre doesn't become a problem, but variability still persists because we all have different tastes. The only con I can think of is that there won't be any simultaneous discussions from different clubs. But I think it's a minor issue at best.
Either way, let me know what you think!
Edit 2: It seems to me that the second idea is more accepted. So that's what we're going with!
To recap: Each week, someone will host the #musicclub, picking an album they enjoy, or have been listening to recently. The post could include some background on the artist and type of music, some sample tracks of the album, ways to access the album in full (youtube is good for this kind of stuff, as is spotify, itunes, etc.), and related tracks from other artists. Then there can be a discussion about the album in the thread!
The current list of users that wish to host is below. I figured I could start, just to set an example and give a very clear picture of what I was thinking. If you wish to be added to the list, just mail me!
Kafke (tentative)
I'll also mail the next person on the list a few days before they host, just to remind them. If they can't do it, I'll just move done the list!
So! How does Monday sound? Or perhaps Sunday?
Update 3: delta made me aware of the fact that theere is already a tag very close to #musicclub. As such, we're changing the name to #weeklydj! Also of note, Sunday is when I'll be making the first post!
Hey, Sounds good. I just want to get a sense of how we intend to do genres, though. Most bands don't fit neatly into a single genre, and many genre tags are applied to eras rather than sounds. The reason I bring this up is because of what I'd like to contribute - post-punk and post-punk revival. Both these terms are often applied to a certain time in music, not always to a certain sound. Besides, the lines between post-punk revival and other genres - indie rock in the case of The National and Interpol, garage rock in the case of The White Stripes - has always been blurred. It's the same when we talk about The Clash or Wire, say, both of whom covered ground from punk to other genres. I don't know; I could be wrong. Count me in, though. Would love to know what others think.
what if we every week voted on an album/artist/whatever and discussed that instead of dividing by genre
We could, but I think @eightballsamurai's intention was to have a genre-wise separation so that people with different interests have different threads to follow. Forgive me if I got the wrong idea.
im aware of that, but as you said so in your own post, most bands blur genres.
Yeah, one option would be to go easy on the avoidable 'but these guys aren't punk at all' comments. We could also look at having playlists sorted by other criteria - just riffing here - night-time music, general psychedelia, etc. This works best with playlists and not albums, though. I concede that. Anyway, I realise that option 2 is not mutually exclusive to what has already been suggested, there's no reason why we can't have both.
what do you propose?Anyway, I realise that option 2 is not mutually exclusive to what has already been suggested, there's no reason why we can't have both.
I suggest we have broader classifications. Again, just an idea. As an example, in the beginning, instead of restricting ourselves to post-punk, we could have punk and related sub-genres. These could include, say, post-punk, goth rock, and noise rock. It is up to us how wide we want to cast the net. If there is a clamour for further segregation, we could do it later. As for the playlists suggestion, another idea for another hasthtag, I suppose.
Great! I'd love to host. Just putting it out there.
I haven't seen this touched on yet, so I thought I'd throw this idea around. For those who aren't already familiar with this, tags are added to threads by the OP (a maximum of two). However, a third tag is also able to be appended as voted on by the community. If you view the tutorial (see the bottom very of any page), it touches on this a bit. thenewgreen has written about how exactly this works in this thread. It reads as follows. So, perhaps that could be something to be looked at as a partial solution to the problem of genre tagging!Edit: there's been some discussion on the issue of genre being murky. This is a great point and more discussion is welcome.
To answer your question.... Next to your name in the upper left hand corner is a "hub-wheel". This wheel populates more and more as you use the site and are recognized. Once you've completed a full wheel you will be able to administer "community tags".
For any other questions check out the FAQ page, the "ABOUT" page and the "TUTORIAL" at the bottom of the page.
Beyond that, feel free to let me know if I can answer any questions. Thanks and welcome!
Thanks! I didnt filling my wheel actually did anything haha
Hey guys/gals, I made up a template for album postings which could possibly be used for #weeklydj. It's still a work in progress. I'd love to have those interested in this to visit here and throw around their ideas so it may be improved upon. Let me know what you think!
I'm going to make a second reply in accordance with your edit. We're going to do artists instead of genres now right? I'm fine with that. There are more than a few people I know that deserve way more attention than what they're getting.
I like the idea of having an album or artist each post to discuss. Though, I haven't quite found a specific type of genre/music that I enjoy, so I've just been dashing around sampling everything. Which is why I like the idea. So I definitely wouldn't want to lead it (seeing as I'm not that great with determining genre), but I'd definitely participate. The genre tags would be nice to learn/classify music into different genres. The only problem I could see is either having too broad of genres, or too specific. But I guess that could be ironed out with time. I'm just curious as to how the next artist/album would be decided. Suggestions? Just whatever the person who's hosting it had listened to recently? I don't know if making several sub-groups would be the best idea. Since we are already a small community. Nonetheless, I think it'd be a great way to discover music :D
My current idea is to have a person host one album thread every week. It'd be up to the person to pick the album they'd want to discuss. I think we're going to have to ditch the genre tags, simply because genres are too broad and could inspire conflict. The idea I'm positing would allow for diversity of genre type without having that argument of "X artist is really Y genre, not Z genre." Thoughts on that?
That'd be fine. Also, I think commenting about similarity in style or genre for each album/band would be great as well. That way anyone who ends up really liking the ablum can then go on to explore similar artists as well. I'm not familiar with how a book club is run, but I'd assume there are similar books recommended to the current one being read. So yea, not specifying genre would be fine.
Perhaps. As I said, I'm not familiar with much music. I didn't listen to much when I was younger, and more recently I've just been doing maybe 2-3 minute samples of pretty much every artist until I found some I relatively like. So I don't know if I'd be able to come up with good suggestions. But I wouldn't mind doing it once or twice after it gets going.
i like the second idea better. i think its great that you can jump in and out of the weekly discussions based on interrests also, very willing to lead
I was thinking about starting serialized album reviews or something on my own recently -- it's been done before by a few users but never stuck -- and I think that could dovetail well with this. So add me to whatever list you feel like making. Popularizing the tag #albumreviews or such could get a group of dedicated followers of that tag to discuss different albums every Sunday, maybe. I wouldn't break it down by genre; I would encourage all genres to be reviewed and let people break out of their comfort zones. On hubski we've got fans of everything. PS - be aware of this! It's a cool thing that I started, now handled by bfv, and has at the least potential for good album ideas. Tons of diverse music there, going back almost a year (!) now.
I'd be more than happy to join in. I'm just having trouble figuring out the genre of what I mainly listen to. Experimental/Electro/Synth Pop maybe?
i love the idea, the thing about switching leaders ever few weeks is a really good idea. on that note i guess i could start #alternative which i primarily listen to, if no one else wants to.
