Each day will have a different theme around a single word. Post your photos in the comments. You don't need to be a pro to participate (as is evidenced by my photos). Please feel free to "stick" this post if you'd like to participate or follow along. - REMINDER THAT ANYONE CAN PARTICIPATE
Theme for Thursday, Oct 31st (Halloween in the US and elsewhere): Scary

Awesome shot, and a very creative interpretation of the theme, thanks for the photo and for all of your great photos throughout the challenge, they've been really fantastic.
And likewise, thank you for organizing this challenge, it was a really fun idea. I enjoyed sharing a few of my shots and seeing everyone else's photos and how they interpreted the theme. Do you think you'll be doing another one in the future? Did you time it intentionally to lead up to a holiday?
It looks like elizabeth is going to keep the idea of a "photo challenge" around a theme going. She mentioned in this comment that it would likely be once a week or so. I'm sure she would appreciate any help etc. Perhaps the person choosing the theme and making the post could change? I'm glad to continue to participate. As for it leading up to a holiday, that was really just a coincidence. One day I just remembered that ecib had posted his Amateur Phone Photo Contest a while back and thought, "I really enjoyed that." and voila!
And on behalf of myself and I dare say everyone else here, an über thanks to thenewgreen for starting something amazing, and for passing the torch to keep it going! I've had a lot of fun doing this, as I don't generally show my photos to wider audiences. The past week or two has made me go back and finally post-process some pics that had been overlooked, and generally revisit the countless hundreds, thousands of pics I've taken, reminding me I am long overdue to get out there with camera-in-hand again. Kudos thenewgreen!
Thanks a lot, it's nice to hear that. I really enjoyed it too. It will be very nice to be surprised and inspired by a theme I didn't conceive of. Looking forward to that.
Sounds awesome, I like the weekly idea. It'd also give people more time to shoot new photos if they choose. elizabeth, if you want any help with the weekly challenges just let me know. I'd be willing to share the responsibility of posting the weekly challenges (maybe alternate weeks?) if you don't feel like doing 100% of the work.

That was the look I went for, because it's exactly the sentiment you get in person. I still remember the news when it all came out, following the case, and watching the movie version which came out a few years ago (note: it's visually brutal). I did the return drive from Sydney to Uluru in March; passing through northern South Australia, I came to a fork in the road having to turn right, I saw it there on the road sign: 'Snowtown 50km'. When else was I going to be in rural SA? (Sidenote: As it would turn out, 5 months later doing the same drive again). The drive was pretty standard rural country scenery, until a single-laned turn-off appears, marked by a sign pointing the direction into town. As you drive in, it's abundantly clear it's a tiny, remote town in seemingly almost nowhere. You drive across a set of train tracks past a handful of old buildings, and turn right into the one main street. And as you drive along, the building sits and blends in so well I almost drove right past it. I parked across the road, got out, and was just stunned into silence. I've been lucky enough to see some amazing places/sights in the world that many would say "it takes your breath away" or "it leaves you speechless", but this was the epitome of having nothing to say to this.
Something about this, and not just the red-brick, reminds me of High Plains Drifter edit: Just read the link. Definitely "scary".Examiners attempting to identify the remains found them to be mummified rather than dissolved. The killers had stored the bodies in acid with the apparent intention of dissolving the remains, but had chosen hydrochloric acid which has the effect of mummification instead.
-c'mon! Don't homicidal maniacs do their research anymore?
Unfortunately that link went to your messaging with elizabeth about continuing Hubski Photo Challenges! The bank is creepy as all buggery: I got out of the car and walked around, had a look at the steel doors at re front, no chance of looking inside through them or the windows.
Spookier yet, on the right side of the building (if looking at the photo), there's a window facing the street. On the inside window will between the glass and the blinds were a pair of gold coloured cherub angel statuettes. Sad and chilling all at once, especially knowing what was once inside. I didn't hang around too long: it's a two-street-town, and I'm sure the locals get their share of gawkers coming to see it and nothing else. The old bank was put up for auction last year, but I don't think it sold. It was marketed as a 4br home and ex-bank (edit: sold late last year, no word what's being done with it yet).High Plains Drifter
I can only assume someone who has the ability to completely give exactly zero F's about the story. Similar story happened with the Gonzales house here in Sydney a few years ago. Nutshell: The son Sef Gonzalez, for reasoning I can't remember, murders his family at home one night. Calls the cops, says they were attacked by intruders. Story doesn't wash, eventually turned out it was him. So, what happens to a not-old, 2 storey house in a nice part of Sydney? It was put up for sale, and a Buddhist couple bought it. The Real Estate agency didn't think it necessary to do an "oh, by the way..." about it's history; the couple found out about it in the papers after signing the sale, and then refused to refund the couple. A heap of bad PR forced the Agency to refund and cancel the contract, and got fined pretty stiffly. Then, someone else bought the house knowing the history, for about $700k or so. Edit: Got lost in storytime, nice photo by the way!
Not scary in itself, but one of my favorite pictures from a few months ago. The cop was parked in front of my house, so figured I could get a badass shot of a cop car with my house in the background. The scary part, he was just blocking the road, as this was on the other side of him... There was a chemical fire and subsequent explosion in my neighborhood and they had most of the street on lockdown for the better part of a day, and police, fire, and special operations units came from all over the metro to assist. They evacuated all the houses, I was right at the line and we were allowed to stay in our home. Don't store your chlorine next to your algae killing pond treatments if anyone is interested! (There were no deaths or injuries) Kind of a stretch for the scary theme, but not gonna lie was waiting for a chance to post that cop car picture, and it's the last day. So deal with it. :)
Not a stretch at all. I'd say that would be scary, especially if your house was right on the edge of the evacuation point. I've often wondered about that. If you were right on the edge of the evacuation point for something like a chemical spill or say, a hurricane. Would you stay? Even if I were twenty miles outside of it I would likely evacuate my home. Maybe I'm just overly cautious. Glad it all turned out well.
It was a little scary, ended up being pretty tame, but I was concerned a bit too. About myself, my wife, my cats, and my home. I was actually bullshitting with the cop about beer when the explosion happened. I asked if we should be worried or go inside or leave, and all he said was "I've heard bigger explosions... you don't see any fire do you? I think we're good." and then went back to talking about local imperial stouts he enjoys. Chlorine mixed with some Algaecide chemical, and then that started burning/corroding and eating away everything it touched I guess, and it eventually got to a small gas can in the dudes garage which was the explosion we heard. Fire department was already there, and we later found out it was intentional because no fire fighter wanted to go in the garage as they saw the gas can melting, so they poked it with a robot or something to detonate it, then hosed the whole thing down with some type of dry chemical because you can't use water in chemical fires I guess. The rest of the day was mostly just cleanup, and keeping people away from the fumes and what-not while it cooled and they could get the right people to clean it. Was an interesting day in my quiet little part of the burbs. Two weeks later, we had a huge storm in my neighborhood. A large oak tree fell on this same guys garage and crushed it and both his cars... just after he got done repairing it from the chemical incident. Wish I had pictures of the storm damage and hail we got. Now that wasn't scary, it was terrifying. Didn't take any pictures because I was hiding in my basement shaking. :)
That poor guy. I guess, when it rains it pours.. or in his case, hails and downs a tree on your garage. But really, what are the chances of your garage being destroyed to that level twice within two weeks? Crazy.
He had a pretty good sense of humor about it, oddly refreshing.
I guess at that point all you can do is laugh really, right? Thanks for sharing.
That would be a much better pace. Then, based on the theme, that even gives people time to go out and take new work and actually perform the challenge instead of us just pulling whatever we have available. It could be pictures we take specifically for the challenge OR have lying around. I'd much prefer that to daily, though this has been a lot of fun seeing everyones work.Maybe once a week?
"The owl's are not what they seem"we should continue I think! Maybe once a week?
You want spearhead it? I'd gladly take part, but can't be the one to do it each week. Go for it. Or anyone else for that matter.
Awesome! I like your idea of it being more sporadic, perhaps once a week. You'd be surprised how much time it took me to comprise the ideas etc :) I made you an "editor" on this post so that you can click "edit" and copy paste the participants thus far. My guess is that they'd not mind if you continued to "shout-out" to them in future versions. You can ask if anyone would like to be removed when you make your first post. I add people to the "shout-out" list as people trickle in. If you have any questions, feel free to let me know, I am more than happy to help. I'm excited to be a participant, thanks elizabeth.
Also, here is Last Years Pumpkin -My wife said "it looks like a retarded flower." -Not my finest moment... or hers.
