Life is fleeting. What are some of the things, large or small, that you would like to accomplish before you die?
I'll start. My wife is a doctor and in her last year of medical school she did an away rotation in Peru for about 2 months. At the end of the rotation I met her there for 10 days (with scrimetime) and we hiked to Machu Picchu. Just prior to the hike we found out that she was pregnant. Since then, my daughter has been born and I would like to again take the 4 day hike to Machu Picchu with my daughter.... this time with her actually hiking and not hitching a ride in her mom's uterus. She will have to be at least 10 years old imo for this to be worth while.
What's on your list?

This is too cool. I'm going to have to tap your experience on this in the future. You look like a travel channel host in this picture, lol. You wear the 'rugged' look well :) Personally, my bucket lists have never revolved around terribly grand things. There's places I want to go, but none of them matter much in comparison to being surrounded by good friends and family, which I have now. There's material things that I want, but they matter even less compared to the same.
One thing on my list is to travel across America on my motorcycle with both my brother and my uncle, hitting up great culinary points of interest, camping in the national parks, and seeing the places in between the places. Thats the biggest one I can think of. I'm thinking this one is about 3 to 4 years out realistically.
Other than that, in the shorter term, I just want to learn to code mobile applications and get one published in the app store. I'm teaching myself Objetive C right now, which is going really well. So I've got one big thing and one small thing :P
Are you engaged?
http://imgur.com/Bjfly I was even given some diamonds the ring my finance's late father gave her mother which was a mixed blessing. Hopefully your girlfriend is as patient as mine was.
I had the weird experience of getting my wife's engagement ring in China. My credit card wouldn't run at the store, so I had to go to the bank and then get a cash advance on my card. At the time it was 1USD to 8RMB. As the largest bill is 100RMB, I had a stack. I felt like a pimp dropping that on the counter. Even more so when 2 girls were called over to count it.
Danny: Sir, I love your daughter and I want to marry her. That's why I'm calling. Jack: First of all, Danny, the truth is this is just a courtesy call. Like when you say to your neighbor, "We're having a loud party on Saturday night if that's all right with you." What you really mean is, "We're having a loud party on Saturday night." Perhaps it's just my rebellion against my conservative background, but I want to separate myself as much as possible from traditions that imply that my fiancée is something to be given away. I know that asking them for their blessing isn't necessarily the same thing as asking permission to marry her, it's just something I'm weird about.
He didn't feel he was "giving her away" as much as he felt that he was saying to both her and I, "this guys good, he'll be a good partner for you, you have my thumbs up". Trust me, my wife belongs to no person. She is as independent and capable as human beings come. As a father of a daughter, I would someday hope (and perhaps expect) that the man she choses to marry will extend me the same courtesy. I would likely ask him very similar questions that my father in law asked. Hopefully, like me and my father in law, we will have a close relationship.
This is my favorite picture from the trip. Me and my gal: http://i.imgur.com/a9NJr.jpg
Those are the only two I can think of right now. This is a great post.
Well, have you seen the pyramids? Have you touched them? How close have you been to outer space? Hope you are well, old friend :)
From the wiki article: In 1979, the Moon Treaty made the surfaces of objects such as planets, as well as the orbital space around these bodies, the jurisdiction of the international community. Additional resolutions regarding outer space have been drafted by the United Nations, but these have not precluded the deployment of weapons into outer space. -Doesn't it seem incredibly arrogant for us to claim any jurisdiction over such things?
I've always had a vision of a forested lot with a structure inspired by the mid-century modern movement. A nice ranch with massive planes of glass for a facade. Hmm...
I absolutely LOVE mid-century modern homes. We tried to land one, which means I called the owner to ask how much.... it was $750k. -Yeah... not quite in my range. Someday though.
I look forward to reading her work and staying in your ecologically friendly home.
Ash was quite jealous when you two went to Peru. If we ever get the opportunity, I'm sure she'll be calling on you as tour guides.
I have a bucket book. My list is now too big for a single piece of paper. They include: Drink Vodka in Moscow, study Italian in Florence, sit on a jury, skydive, have my portrait painted, learn to Rollerblade, run a 10kms, shower in a waterfall, learn to play a musical instrument with some degree of skill, dazzle a crowd on the dance floor, sleep under the stars, hold an audition for a posse, survive a bar fight, teach someone illiterate to read, drive (or ride) the autobahn, test drive a top-end sports car, get my motorbike licence and use it, become a member of the mile high club (even if I have to do it alone), hike through a jungle armed with only a Machete, have a star named after me, save a life, spend a night in jail for a semi-cool reason, own a sword and know how to use it, learn to bar-tend, send a message in a bottle, make love on the kitchen floor, dye my hair electric blue or purple or green, then there are all the places I want to go........
Sleeping under the stars is a treat. It's pretty easy to accomplish too.
That is a formidable list! Question: Have you made any strides towards completing the items in your bucket book? A lot of people like to make goals but then never act upon them. Is your book getting shorter as you accomplish things? If so, what was one of your favorite things to cross of the bucket book?become a member of the mile high club (even if I have to do it alone)
-that had me laughing aloud at our breakfast table.
My wife spent the majority of her time in Lima and when I came to join her we spent a few days there. I had some of the best ceviche I've ever had. It was pretty fantastic. If I were to return though, I don't think I would spend as much time in Lima. I really enjoyed Cusco and could have used a few more days there just kicking around etc. I have no doubt that Lima is awesome, I just really enjoyed Cusco.
I agree with you about Lima. Its cool, but its like a lot of big cities in that once you've seen the major tourist things, you feel satisfied and want to move on. I loved my stay there and would tell anyone to go for a few days, but I can't say that I'm itching to go back. Cuzco, on the other hand, I would love to tour.
Are you telling me that pisco sours are so delicious that you would drink one knowing it was going to make you ill? Because I need to try one if that's the case...
That said, I can't say why I haven't bought it here. You know how there's something about place that adds to experience. I think that's it. I don't want to ruin the memory if, in fact, the taste isn't as good as I remember (if that makes any sense).
I had one of my favorite ever moments while in Peru, it was amazing: http://hubski.com/pub?id=1779
- and to own a Mercedes my dream car even an old one.
http://i.imgur.com/syJyc.jpg You can get them a lot cheaper than most people think. Actually, you can see the edge of my older one that I am replacing. The new one is a 2005, the older one is a 1997. The 97 runs great at 170k, but it is only rear-wheel drive, and as we are expecting, I don't want to drive that in the winter with a baby. I got the new used on for less than $9k. That's half of many entry level new cars. :)
Egypt would be an amazing trip, I hope you get a chance to make it. As for the Mercedes, they make some great cars, no doubt about it. -Good luck!
