A site where I can finally find compelling articles again.

The only place where you will find competing posts on the resurrection of a stick insect.

A web community for the trading of thoughtful material, for the most part, but there is one caveat (aside from the natural fact that content is always diverse, including in the sense that it will contain elements disliked by some); that this post in fact reminds me of other web communities such as Reddit in that people are referring to Hubski as if it were some sort of cult (without the negative connotations); by this I mean that a sense of group identity has formed - this being the point of Hubski, as far as I could see, but I merely wish to warn against a road upon which we might tread - look to Reddit and you will see people calling each other Redditors, talking about meeting "another one of us" in the offline world and inventing silly codephrases such as "When does the narwhal bacon?"; all of this creates a sense of specialness where none exists - Reddit is visited by millions of people every day; what I mean to say is that Hubski is not special, nor are the people on it simply for visiting a website - this does not make it special; what is special are the relationships formed, however shallow, between its members; we must remember this and not confuse the name for the people (sentences have no intrinsic length outside of style).

I have no idea what "When does the narwhal bacon" means but I can tell you that my pal caio is a big Beatles fan and has a penchant for particle physics and is scared of insects. My pal lessismore is a basketball fan infected with Linsanity and is passionate about parenting and technology. My friend scrimetime introduced me to the writing of Christopher Hitchen's and loves any post involving The Band. fr33lunch has introduced me to seasonal cooking and free soloing and is in general.. awesome. sounds_sound introduced me to the architecture of Louis Kahn how cool is that? and alpha0 has introduced me to music from around the globe that I otherwise would have never heard. Saydrah has helped shape my views on woman's reproductive rights and NotPhil's posts have helped to inform my knowledge of everything from philosophy to human psychology and someday I'm going to buy b_b a nice bottle of Scotch. I could go on and my guess is that any number of us could post such accounts of each other. This is what makes a site like this special, whether it be Hubski or elsewhere. I can't speak for the other sites, I don't use them but I like it here. I like it because of the people and not in spite of them.
So, I agree with you that Hubski is not special but I also agree with you that the relationships I have formed here certainly are. Well said AnSionnachRua.

I refuse to be pigeonholed like that. I'll have you know I enjoy Robbie Robertson's later solo releases, and anything involving Ronnie Hawkins; and Richard Dawkins for that matter.

Hubski is what I think about when I'm not hubskiing.

I'm pretty sure you are granted immediate canadian citizenship just for knowing what a tuke is.

It's like Lucky Charms, it's magically delicious.

The trick will be to cultivate and keep this as Hubski grows. In a sense, it's the most impossible challenge in the world :)
But the best products/services/technologies, above all else, solve a problem, and what you described is a huge problem and opportunity for web communities. I think Hubski is off to a great, if modest, start.
