This film , along with Matthew McConahay's performance in True Detective have a really solidified him as w formidable actor. The guy is no joke. I enjoyed the film.
McConaughey has really stepped up, and started taking acting seriously. Rust was an awesome character. Harrelson playing Marty was so funny, because he is actually really liberal. I've watched the new episodes three times each, trying to figure things out. If you can't get into the new season, there is a site called joust. You bet imaginary points. https://joust.com/contest/truedetective/open Spoiler Alert
I saw buyers club a few years ago. I liked it, but am fuzzy on details.
Much of what has already been said I agree with. There are two scenes in this movie that really hit me hard. The first would be when Matthew McConaughey is driving towards the Mexican border and he stops the car to cry. There was just this sense of vulnerability in that moment that really dug deep. The second scene would be Jared Leto crying in the hotel room about how he doesn't want to die. That was a tough seen for me. The sense of mortality and the fear of death really came through. I often question what it would be like to stare down death, to know it is inevitably barreling towards you. I love that the movie and its actors made me ponder these thoughts along with all the other controversial ideas. Not a super huge deal, but if I could get added to the shout-out list that would be awesome.
I'm very impressed with McConaughey. His performance had me rooting for him. Every time I see a living example of racism or homophobia I think about what it would take people to come to the view that we humans are more alike than different and that we shouldn't persecute one another for our differences. Well, in McConaughey's Ron Woodroof, it takes his entire life and worldview being upended by a diagnosis of a highly stigmatized disease for his "position to evolve" as Obama would say. I think the film is also an excellent portrayal of a narrow part of the 80s, that coming from someone who never lived through it.
Solid film. Great performances from McConaughey and Leto. Still not sold on McConaughey's range, but he can put out a fantastic performance when he fits the part. One technical aspect I enjoyed was the editing. Whether it as Woodroof popping pills or selling them, there were a couple montages I enjoyed. And the editing altogether was probably the film's best aspect technically. I do have a couple criticisms. That masturbation scene in the middle of the film felt a little out of place to me. It was a strange moment of comic relief that followed the touching dinner before it. I also thought Steve Zahn's character was oddly used. I know he's probably based on a real person so they could only use him when it mattered. But he's introduced in the beginning and you think he'll be important. But really that introduction is only to show how he needs Woodroof's drugs for his father, which is shown in a weird offhand scene with, I think, the film's only use of narration. Then it's tied together when he administers those drugs to Woodcruff at the end. The ending was also a bit anti climatic for me, although I did enjoy the moment when everyone is clapping. All in all, I still say it was solid. I was entertained throughout and never felt like looking away. I'd give it a 3.5/5. EDIT: Found an interesting WaPo article on the film's depiction of the AIDS crisis if anyone is interested.
As an editor, I am over the moon that someone actually noticed our work!
I LOVE hubski :)One technical aspect I enjoyed was the editing.
I almost feel like Carmac McCarthy wrote this. The themes of masculinity when faced with a harsh natural enemy and how the characters deal with the culture shock. I was surprised to learn about AZT and being unfamiliar with AIDS medications, I thought the drug was still widely used. When I was younger I was under the impression that AZT was pretty much your only hope for survival. I do know enough that when Ron has sex with the random girl he runs the risk of being reinfected. It still amazes me how much fear and ignorance surrounded the plague in the 80s and as a consequence how miraculous it didn't spread deeper into the population. A very affecting film with powerful performances.
I thought it was interesting to see characters coping with the inevitability of dying. When Ron is told he has only thirty days to live, he refuses to accept it. Ron tries to blame the doctors for making a mistake while claiming that nothing can kill Ron Woodroof in thirty days. I feel like a lot of what I find important would lose all value if I was told I had thirty days to live too.
I'm going to watch this tonight. I forgot it was on the docket!!!
I recommend watching Mud. It's sort of like his transition movie from being this stoner whatever dude with abs to taking more serious roles. It's a nice story and a nice movie with tons of nostalgia and hints of what kind of performances he will soon start to take on.
I'd recommend Joe with Nic Cage and the kid from Mud. It's a bit similar to Mud. An ex-con takes a kid under his wing, the kid's dad is no good on a whole other level even than an ex-con who manages a bunch of guys who poison pine trees for a living. Cage is a gifted actor with some self imposed financial burdens that necessitate him being in shit movies. It's also based on a book by one of my favorite authors so I was giddy when it was announced. I sent the sequel to someone on here as part of #hubskiliterarything with the promise that he'd do a book report on it. I need to find his name and call him out.
