I'm reading this at work. Slow going since I keep getting interrupted.
This was my first Ishiguro novel. It works so well because the sci-fi is so background you spend half the book not realizing what they are and once you do it leaves you completely on the fence morally. Plus a beautiful story of love and loss. Read this if you want a great introduction to his works.
I agree but I understand why he would be. Also these seem to be maybe out of his wheelhouse being literature and fiction.
Thank you for getting that dumb song stuck in my head again
I almost feel like Carmac McCarthy wrote this. The themes of masculinity when faced with a harsh natural enemy and how the characters deal with the culture shock. I was surprised to learn about AZT and being unfamiliar with AIDS medications, I thought the drug was still widely used. When I was younger I was under the impression that AZT was pretty much your only hope for survival. I do know enough that when Ron has sex with the random girl he runs the risk of being reinfected. It still amazes me how much fear and ignorance surrounded the plague in the 80s and as a consequence how miraculous it didn't spread deeper into the population. A very affecting film with powerful performances.
Hey I love a good piece of pop culture trash. Yes, it is sad to see a sacred cow get turned into Big Macs but let's not forget burgers are delicious as is watching a fall from grace. I welcome reading an author destroying their beloved creation. It has a "Misery" sheen to it. Sorry for everybody's fond memories getting pissed on but I didn't write the damn thing.
Whenever I get angry, sad, or ground down by life on Earth, I seem to run across NASA'S tracking sites and it puts it all in perspective. Why should we spend millions of dollars on things like this when there are more pressing problems on Earth to fund? Because this is why we even bother trying to solve those pressing problems.
Thank you for the nightmares Google!
I feel the same information diet. It is like when you first start a diet and your body just craves all those guilty pleasures. Reddit is very good at bringing all that content right to you in easily digestable nuggets with clever commentary. I popped over and checked it out but it was like seeing your favorite junk food was soylent green all along. The site has just soured for me, and I can't enjoy it knowing the corporate sanitization has taken root. There is nothing wrong with making money (I hope the guys that run Hubski like ThenewGreen et all. get nice and rich) but a hive corporate culture which a certain CEO is fostering over there is destructive to a vibrant, diverse community. I may sharply disagree with some of you but I hope that you at least have the chance to act like jerks. I am grateful that I have found Hubski and look forward to disagreeing, debating, and learning from all of you no matter how delusional your opinion on Barry Manilow is. See you all around.
It will be interesting to see how the trial shakes out. This type of organized crime is only going to get more common. The scary truth is the blackhats right now are miles ahead of authorities.
Pushang Daisies. I swear Bryan Fuller never gets a chance at parties to finish his stories.
I love movie clubs. I'm following you FreeThinker and the hashtag. Look forward to the discussion.
I had a Fight Club spliced genitals moment when I saw that. Did I see Buffett or just think that I did?
I don't know how I feel about the product placement. I get they were satirical about corporate whoring but then they still whore the film out. Also during the SHTF scene with the tourists see if you can identify an older gentleman protecting his two drinks. Fun movie though.
Saw the pilot for High Castle but my prime died out before I could finish it :(
