Hey all, I'm hardly a newbie around here (330+ days!) but I think it's about time to formally introduce myself. I should mention that I'm writing this from my 'Pope-aggedon 2015' bunker here in Philly.
I don't know how long I'll be down here, so I brought some stuff with me: my pencils/materials for mapmaking, a bunch of Comp Sci and Sociology homework from my senior year, my laptop for web dev/gaming, and of course - Irish whiskey and local beer.
If you read my description, it says I'm interested in 'studying, designing and participating in constructed environments', fancy way of saying, I love online communities. I like to do ethnographic work in particular and apply my CS skills to my research.
However, that's more of a hobby, my current preoccupations are job hunting (and applying for Venture for America) and graduating on time, with a healthy dash of senior-year fun. Not quite sure what else to add.... AMA?.... check out my list of links too!
Nice to formally meet you all! I'll post some pics of the pope lockdown later.
lil - recommended I do this, Quatrarius - we spoke before on IRC I think?
I hope it is Tullamore Dew 10 or 12. Jameson in its most common form burns up my insides for some reason. Welcome Greenitalics from an even more of a noob (although I swear I registered here years ago and have no idea where that account went). I hope you also brought a sharpener of some sort because pencils without sharpeners are just blunt stabby sticks. Best of luck in senior year. Undergrad is very hard when you know you want to go further. But if you do not, senior year is a blast. In my grad program everyone knew exactly where they were going one year before before graduating and so last year was almost entirely inconsequential. So the high school level maturity resumed! It was great.
I wouldnt expect anything tullamore from you than that sort of wordplay, ref.tullamore DON'T
My go-to is Jameson, for some reason its easier to drink when you're with other people. I fell in love when I met Red Breast 15 in a rural pub in Ireland, it was an experience. Eh, stabby sticks may prove useful when the tourists start getting rowdy, but yeah, all kinds of tools like sharpeners as well! And thanks, yeah everyone is in the 'get a job' or 'decide what to do with your life' phase, but I hope the relaxing will start soon. What do you study in grad school?
Bit light for me too. I am more a Lagavulin 16 guy but not a connoisseur, I apparently like it when it tastes like have a mouthful of peat. Round here.
I added #newtohubski even though you're not new, in hopes that some newbie hubskiers will see this and come say hello! Good to see you greenitalics
I'm new here and come to say hello. Hello greenitalics!
Thanks coffeesp00ns, wasn't quite sure if there already was a tag for this sort of thing or not! And hey FuzzyWords!
I have a question: how do I ping users like on Voat? Testing: /u/greenitalics @greenitalics Edit: didn't work.
Surround the name with @'s. FuzzyWords is @FuzzyWords@.
Thank you, I think I skipped that part of the markup tips.
hi greenitalics I live near Philly and could be there a whole lot more frequently than I am It would be great if you could join Steve and me (yes, the correct phrasing is "and me") for our mini Hubski meet-up in November. Steve I currently have you in my phone for Nov 3 or 4th. Let me know if this has firmed up/coalesced/changed any. That would help italics too. I don't think we have settled on a location or even an area of Philly, but I'll take the time to suggest either University City (safe) or Fishtown (I'm familiar with the area, ish). If you are down for running up the art museum steps with me tho that'd be pretty cool too. I have been to most popular places in Philly along that corridor i.e., Union Transfer, TLA, Johnny Brenda's, Chinatown (several locations specifically), University of the Arts, the Phily Museum of Art, PhilaMOCA, wherever they hold Philly's Punk Rock Flea Market, Orlieb's, The Kimmel Center, The Barbary (shout-out to nowaypablo !), UPenn (for music, medicine, and writing), Circle Thrift, now I'm just listing places to list places, tell us what you think about living in Philly. I saw the Weeknd at a concert at UPenn last winter. I wasn't that impressed. Once upon a time I had to tip a bartender at Johnny Brenda's nearly $40 (100%+) because of my brother. I believe, actually, it was one of my first Hubski posts. Now I shall drunkenly try to find it
f'yeah, the Barbary! If you guys end up doing any museum-y stuff please peep the Rodin museum! its a crazy collection of Rodin's sculptures, including the Gates of Hell, that some old rich dude collected and later opened to the public. Largest Rodin collection outside of France, I believe.
omg cloud cult holy shit i forgot about them. i loved them. i wonder how old their 2nd kid is now.
So good. I liked The Meaning of 8 most but I don't remember now. I used to listen to Light Chasers on the way back to camp the summer I worked there. And they were the first concert I saw in DC when I moved here. Lots of good feelings associated with them
when someone deliberately obscures all references to their gender across all posts, you can't really be faulted for that. now that i'm all "out" and half of hubski knows i'm female there's no benefit to painstaking gender neutrality in my self posts but I have always enjoyed that the internet lets me get away without an assigned gender (to an extent). Personally I'd prefer it if it just never came up. But janno - they say it don't be like it is, but it do
Not available to peons like me apparently. I believe I posted this recently with a "RIP Moses Malone" title:
hahaha. I did not recognize the title but Meryn is great. And I do know that tune! And if you want to know a long story about how I accidentally bought Charles Barkley a whole lot of scotch one night during the playoffs just let me know.
I forget what year it was but the Phoenix Suns were in LA to play the Lakers. On the news Sir Charles was asked whether he would be partying a lot and he said absolutely not as this was a very important series. I think it was the playoffs. My buddy and I had a good laugh about that as he is notorious for partying hard. So that night a few of us went out for drinks and at some point we ended up at the Chateau Marmont. Grabbed a table in the corner and ordered a round of scotch. The waitress then disappeared and so when it came time for a new round I just went up to the bar to order. But somehow the bartender was missing too so I just stood there waiting. Meanwhile a bunch of guys came up and stood behind me except one who sidled up to the bar next to me to wait as well. He must have been about 6 '10" and we started to shoot the shit. I think we were talking about scotch. The barkeep showed up and asked this guy what he wanted and was told I was there first. That was very polite so I ordered a round of doubles for my table and those guys as well. I got the round delivered to my table and stayed at the bar. A couple of the other guys came in (both very tall as well) and we were just chatting away about who knows what. When that drink was almost done one of the guys behind me put his hand on my shoulder and said thanks for the drink and now it was his turn to buy a round of triples. When I turned around to speak with him it turned out that it was Charles Barkley. He sent a tray over to my table as well. I can't believe I didn't recognize his voice before that as he ain't exactly a quiet man. Apparently the whole group of them were NBAers and the people at my table were laughing at me as they knew that I would have no clue as to who they were. So much for not partying hard during the playoffs. See I told you it was a long story!
Yeah I think I remember you - pardon if not any specifics. Haven't seen you on the site for a while, but apparently you follow me? Strange.
