Wrote this song yesterday, recorded and mixed it today. That's one way to procrastinate packing, I guess.
Interestingly, not my first holiday song.
This is the first song I've recorded in a long time, maybe 4 or 5 months. I've been writing new stuff constantly, just been having a hard time setting things down. It's about the first holiday without someone you love. Give some hugs this year.
Lyrics:
Late to mass
We had to stand in the back
Angels we misheard - oh, I -
I just mouthed the words
It's been a while.
I don't take his body now
I wait by the aisle
Till my family comes around.
Broken glass
I was a drunken mess
But you just laughed and swept the ground
You said that empty bottles sound like silver bells
(Can we trade our sweaters?)
It's not my size.
Hang up the stockings
(Now there's only five).
I will listen later but the lyrics are wonderful. “Now there’s only five.” -Heartbreaking. Sorry for that, my friend. I have some familiarity with the lyrics pertaining to mass. I used to partake in the communion but no longer do. I feel like a hypocrite doing so. Therefore, I’m the guy that others in my pew have to walk around to get to the aisle. It’s a weird thing knowing that to others in the congregation you likely look like the damned. I’m excited to listen to this flac. It’s been a long time since I’ve recorded too. I’m hoping to get back to it in February. Merry Christmas, pal!
Thanks, other Steve! It's a strange feeling, but it makes my parents happy when I go with them to mass. I don't really remember any of the songs or prayers anymore now, it's always bit surreal being somewhere familiar and feeling so out of place. Looking forward to hearing more of your stuff! Merry Christmas to you and yours.
The very first seconds of this, and other glimpses remind me of Baby Dee. I consider that a high compliment. I really like this. It's spooky and beautiful. I haven't had time to do any recording other than this. Silly, and simple. But it's something.
Just got home from a family holiday. On the way home, ran into new and old great friends, and upon arrival the gift that is flac and your talent is in my inbox. What an amazing day to be back. Not encouraging procrastinating or anything... just sayin'. cough Will check out your previous holiday song after the suitcases are back in and the phone has at least a double digit of battery %-age. Thanks for including the lyrics! I may have to bother you for You Drank Some Darkness's lyrics. I unabashedly belt mumbles in some tracks still. Question: Are you playing chords to back up your vocals or have your voice layered with different pitches (if that makes sense)? Example: the low end of "Broken glass... drunken mess". I swear I hear your voice in other pitches, but the blending is really sick and can't tell how you sweetened the mix.
Glad you're having a good holiday! All the best. The other holiday song is, uh, real short. It's weirdly one of my favorite songs that I've ever done, despite being 26 seconds long. If I ever make more music under the Hot Without Glasses name, it'll sound like that. I'll throw up some lyrics soon! I mumble a lot, so I tend to do that too ;) Good question! The answer is both. There's basically three vocal groups: the main vocal, which is singing all the time; two backing melody tracks, which are singing the same thing as the main vocal, but not all the time; and finally, some backing vocals that are all singing different harmonies. In that particular line, there's the main vocals and the backing vocals. There's also a synth line being played that is using my vocals as a sample, so that might be what you're hearing there - has a similar sonic quality, and is playing at pretty much the same time.
Hope your holiday is good as well! Aw hell yeah, looking forward to the lyrics. Ah-ha. So I guess a little bit of both, in the end. It reminds me of how guitarists would harmonize with a singer's voice juuust right. Real neat to hear that come through over digital media. In that particular line, there's the main vocals and the backing vocals. There's also a synth line being played that is using my vocals as a sample, so that might be what you're hearing there - has a similar sonic quality, and is playing at pretty much the same time.
