OK, since we're confessing to the sins of our youthful follies... I once did a whipit while driving, sure I had my friend hold the wheel, but that was one of the most surreal and stupid, yet funny things I ever did. So yeah... Looking back, I was so lucky (and immature).
I used to drive home after the bar, through downtown, with the cruise control set to 25 because I could only handle one driving variable at a time. The thing is, I wasn't immature. I just needed to get home. We should all be driving tanks. Glow in the dark tanks.
And why shouldn't they? This is the kind of thing I hope to see more of as desire catches up with our abilities. We could do so many things differently, but people are pretty slow to implement anything "new".
my childhood bedroom ceiling has been glowing constellations for over a decade now. it isn't exactly the latest technology. but i realize that implementing this on such a large scale requires a lot of investment and r&d. just seems like such a gimme you know. who wouldn't be onboard with this? i'm wondering if there could be an unspoken aversion to this elsewhere because of its perceived safety. there's already a bit of talk on this thread about teenagers doing dumb stuff. i know if we had glow in the dark lines on the road when i was growing up, i would've driven with my headlights off WAY MORE.as desire catches up with our abilities
I think the aversion is mostly politically driven. If you have large government contract with suppliers that don't have this capability, then it will take time to shift. Old relationships, old money, the old-boys club... powerful stuff.
I live here and I have never even heard of it. I did hear about lights which follow you and replacing conventional light bulbs with LED lights. Only recently we started turning the lights off on the highways in order to save electricity, but we never did anything to actually make the roads more safe. Now it is just the same road, but without the lights. In the article you linked to in your comment it is also mentioned that they want to create priority induction lanes for electrical vehicles. I just hope they research that some more before they start wasting energy... All in all, I am looking forward to what they will come up with and I might even take my parent's car for a spin just so I can drive on that new highway when it is done.
