Here's a couple of examples of what I'm asking about:
Rabbit in the Moon is an electronic music group, but this piece is almost exclusively piano and is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. Part One: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzdZpvph_yw&playnext=1... Part Two:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFlUzvrHD2s&playnext=1...
I'm not a fan of the Goo Goo Dolls or Limp Bizkit, but Fred Durst joined the Goo Goo Dolls to do an exceptional cover of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vYaq9ZzyT4
Aphex Twin makes a lot of "abrasive" types of music sometimes, jungle beats and acid house. And then stuff like "Come to Daddy". But then he can also make really beautiful ambient and piano music, like "Avril 14th" from his album Drukqs.
Elsewhere, thenewgreen mentioned Dan Akroyd, which reminded me of "Briefcase Full of Blues", a great album which sprang from a skit on SNL (and the comedy movie follow-up). It's not highbrow, but it is fun to listen to.
For whatever reason this locks up on me as soon as a ball hits a line :/
I'm on a mac using Chrome and it works :( Theres another program that I was triyng to find that was put on reddit ages ago. I can't seem to find it. There's some really interesting things little programs like this do to create music. FOUND IT!!! http://www.earslap.com/projectslab/otomata (via http://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/grh8p/reddit_i_m...)
I really like that you can record what you've done and that you can change the modes while recording.
I'm also on a Mac running Chrome, probably a bad extension or something on my end. I've seen Otomata before it makes some really interesting noise (I can't bring myself to describe anything I've done with it as music).
Becoming the Archetype is a progressive death metal band. Night's Sorrow is off of their first album. Oh my.
Angelo Badalamenti(sp?), Twin Peaks Edit: inspired me to record this: http://hubski.com/pub?id=18357
That was definitely creepy, but anything involving Twin Peaks almost has to be.
This might not be unexpected to people who listen to ambient, but Brian Transeau, the guy who wrote the song Pop for 'N Sync, also wrote this lovely piece as a lullaby for his newborn daughter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HuNaL74B5k4 She was promptly kidnapped by her mother.
This is awesome. I've been listening to BT for a long time, and this was quite unexpected for me.
Whoah .... I'd have never guessed that was the same person!
Well, my friend is a digital composer who makes amazing orchestration scores for games and movies. His name is Ed Harrison. This is beautiful piece he made for a video.
https://soundcloud.com/ed-harrison/lucky-day-forever This is another beautiful piece he made for a Half Life 2 mod called NEOTOKYO.

Found this one while searching for a piece of video game music. I am not disappointed in the slightest. It's an electroswing piece called "Diamonds" by Parov Stelar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2Vtnf7rr1Q
This is really cool, I didn't even know "electroswing" was a thing...
