With the recent influx of new users, I have been inundated with feature requests, many of which are very good.
Some of these features will be implemented. However, even those that don't will be influencing our future design decisions.
Sitting here with my list of suggested features in front of me, I thought it would be interesting to pose the converse to you all:
What feature does Hubski currently have that you think it should not?
I fucking hate that. It blows up at 25 which means if you've got a hot comment and you also have a life you have to pound the thing like twelve times and make note of the PMs just to see what's there and even then they get lost. Reddit has the worst implementation of messaging EVAR.
"Similar posts." I don't know what algorithm you're using there, but it isn't accurate, they aren't fresh, and they're distracting you from coming up with functionality that accomplishes what I think you actually want (a way to provide deeper discussion related to the subject at hand).
Yeah, this one stands out to me as maybe something you haven't revisited in a while. Similar posts are generally 80 days old and commenting on them is futile. I'm not sure we even need a similar posts button, really, what with hashtags and following people who put out consistent content. EDIT: the similar posts on this particular thread have actually been posted in the last day or two, but none of them have anything in common with this except the tag, so it seems like you've got a redundancy.
Good point. Even so, sometimes it's nice to have features that reside in the background, but are available for those users that really like to drill down into the site. IMO Google often does this well. Putting simplicity upfront, while enabling for more complex interactions for those that want it.
Bear in mind that some of us are RTFM types. "Available for users that really like to drill down into the site" is the same thing as "completely hidden from the people who don't like playing whack-a-mole with your functionality." I think you want to keep Hubski visually simple yet functionally deep, but for those of us who want the deep functionality, requiring us to click on everything like it's a treasure hunt is the wrong way to make us happy.
One of the "similar posts" listed on my screen right now: Yeah, somehow I don't think that's related to this discussion at all.
Isn't this feature somewhat redundant? It doesn't seem to serve any purpose that tagging doesn't already serve, and tags seem to do it as well or better. When looking at this thread the only "similar posts" I'm shown are other #askhubski posts, none of which have to do with the design or features of the site.
I have found some incredible conversations and articles through the "similar posts" lists, but agree that it is a misnomer at the least. Maybe a "You Might Enjoy" instead of "Similar Posts" ??? I love finding the old stuff, as I am one of the Influxees, and would love to spend time perusing the Old and Worthy.
It's been mentioned elsewhere, but I'd like to see a little button on (at least) each `outercomm` element to collapse it and all of the subcomments. I've toyed briefly with putting together a userscript to add one but haven't really committed any time to it at this point.
In my opinion if you do end up auto-hiding comments I would base it on hiding comments or subthreads that, after some period of time, don't have any points. So like, if I look at a post that's a week old the site auto-hides any comments that haven't gained any attention yet. Just an errant thought :)
Click 'controls' on left nav and choose to use a different theme under 'hubski-styles'. Dark is default, and works for me on my home computer in the evening. This is my first time logging in from underneath the fluorescent lights at work and I've changed to 'clean'.
It took me way too long to figure out why some posts have a "tab" link and some do not - it's because, for some posts, the article-link and comments-link are the same page (I think?). I suggest that the "tab" link always be there, and just behave differently, opening either one or two new tabs.
I think the links under Submit a Post and above the search bar are just clutter and in terms of navigation hierarchy are far too prominent. It doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the site or its usefulness, but since you asked that has been bugging me just a tiny bit.
The little number next to my orange circle under my name. It doesn't seem to change, I don't know what it means, there's no explanation when I hover it, and it doesn't seem to have to do with either my orange (replies) circle or my gold (badges) circle. I seriously don't know what it is and I wish it would go away.
My understanding of that number is that it is the total number of badges you have available to you to give away. You earn the badges when your wheel is full and starts again. The wheel fills up magically according to some algorithmic alchemical formula. I like that number. I don't want it to go away! Someone wiser than me will confirm or deny my guess.
Denied. It isn't the total number of badges one has available to give away, but the total number of badges one has earned to give away. That sounds confusing probably. Take me for example. My number there says 12. The wheel has gone around 12 times and I have earned 12 badges to give away, BUT I have ALREADY bequeathed some of them so it does not reflect how many I have, still, to give away. If I click my username, it will say badges given 9 of 12. So, it would seem that I have 3 badges to give away. Hope that settles it.
Yes, that's it. Thanks for the clarification. The total number of times the wheel has gone round. Now what is the the number on the other side of the badge picture? Is it the number already given away or the number received from the community for being brilliant (or fun, or funny, or inspiring or idiosyncratic or whatever motivates people to bestow badges?) My guess is that it is the number received? Clarification please?
damn straight. number of badges bestowed, by an admirer, for awesomeness.
Confirmed, but in no way am I wiser than you. -is that an Oxford comma?
Thanks, I didn't catch the "to give away" part, and I appreciate the correction. In my defense, I did forego the claim of "wisdom".
