There are a lot of people that would hate to be branded as racists and yet when it comes down to it, they're dyed in the wool racists. A lot of people I know, particularly whites imagine that because they don't engage in overt racist behaviors, such as calling someone a gook or nigger or spic to their face that they aren't participating in racism. Soft racism is much more pervasive than people are willing to admit. "Black people don't tip" can be an example of soft racism. Attributing Asian males as have smaller than average sized penises or possessing lower sexual drive is soft racism. Walking up to an Asian female and declaring that you know some Chinese/Japanese/Korean and proceeding to say the few phrases you know as an "in" to her "Asian-ness" is soft racism. Walking into a room and assuming the Latino or Latina is servile is definitely racist, and only as soft as a hand nurtured by a whip wielding culture can be. It would be nice if people could remember their own ethnic group's struggles in this country. How the Irish were referred to as "white niggers" or the similar treatment the Italians faced, shortly after. Once people have comfort and some fat on their bones, they forget everything.
This may be a dead horse at this point, but I would be shocked if any of these posters had the gumption to say these things aloud in a public place. Sure, twitter isn't nearly as anonymous as hubski, 4chan, or an IRC may be, but it's still shouting from behind the veil of an LCD monitor. I also would be anything but shocked if any of these posters has a close friend of Asian descent, and the poster rationalizs why they aren't included in the blanket of hatred: "He doesn't really look like it." "She's in the Navy." "He doesn't speak the language." "I only meant East Asians" (like @RaymonRahall). And so on and so forth.
I guess I shouldn't be shocked by anything read on the internet, but I'm shocked... those comments were written about something that ISN'T EVEN REAL. I mean - even if those comments were in reaction to the recent chest thumping out of North Korea it would still be terrible - but for some reason I find it even more ridiculous that this is in reaction to a fictional work.
I need to stop reading these posts, but it's like driving passed a car accident, you can't help but look. These people are horrible.
