Girl in my class thought my animation was good enough to give me her number few days ago and we have hit it off pretty well since (and also since she's ssuper hot). This is such an outlandish sequence of events that I can't even make it up. If I get laid tonight somebody better badge the fuck out of this post because I did the impossible, reserved for indie movies about sensitive artsy guys. I mean shit it wasn't even that good but whatever I'M NOT COMPLAINNIG Until then lookielookie I'm in the process of migrating my blog. Come read about how much I hated the Last of Us because it fucking sucked so much oh my God. If it seems like I'm sleep deprived, I am
Awesome! Hey, er... how'd you make that animation? I suddenly gained interesting in animating for completely unreleated reasons... I'm joking, animation has always seemed interesting. It must be pretty great getting someone's number just by doing something you enjoy(Assuming you enjoy animation, do you?). Top job
It is awesome you have friends at Naughty Dog. You can personally tell them that I thought their second coming of gaming was shit. Shiiiiiiiit. It's not like it's their fault. They're not the ones who threw their game up on a cross like it was some misunderstood genius. In fact, they knew what they were doing. They played that shit so super safe. There is nothing wrong with the game, it's just ridiculously boring. But gamers are okay with ridiculously boring. After all that, tell them to make Jak and Daxter 4. I miss Jak and Daxter.
Both of them came from EA. One of them came from Bungie to EA, where he was one of the main AI guys for Destiny and then one of the main AI guys for whatever Blizzard is working on that isn't Starcraft and isn't Warcraft. So I don't know that either of them had much to do with Jak and Daxter.
Back when I was still considering game dev as a career I remember hearing EA was an absolute hell-hole for workers. Long hours to meet ridiculous deadlines following lay-offs as soon as the product shipped. Do they confirm these stories?one of the main AI guys for whatever Blizzard is working on that isn't Starcraft and isn't Warcraft
I have such fond memories of the Jak and Daxter and Ratchet and Clank series. Game devs don't make them platformer shooters like they used to. None of the whole quick-time-events-hold-A-and-run-at-a-wall-to-get-to-its-roof non-sense.After all that, tell them to make Jak and Daxter 4. I miss Jak and Daxter.
<grumbles/> I have little hope for any video-game-based movies. How many years now have the bioshock / WoW films been in the making? Past the stalled pipelines, most games just don't seem like they would translate well into a movie setting. I have trouble imagining rail-shooting being nearly as entertaining when I'm not the one in control.
I have the same concerns, but at the very least this is CGI and not live action like other video-game based movies. Plus R&C had humor going for it. And Rainmaker isn't too bad, plus the original game creators have a hand in it. But yeah, I'm probably gonna preempt myself and give it 70% before I even see it.
Too busy doin' it.If it seems like I'm sleep deprived, I am
No class today, because my favorite professor slipped on ice and broke her wrist. So, with no deadlines pressing, I sat down with some warm socks, a blanket, a big mug of tea and an excellent book. Cursor's Fury by Jim Butcher, third in the series Codex Alera. I just finished it and damn do I hate book hangovers. I WANT MORE! I'm getting authentic Lamb tikka and naan in a few hours with my special lady friend, and I'm terribly excited to see her. We haven't managed more than a few, admittedly long conversations over the phone since V-Day, with various prior arrangements keeping us engaged in our own stuff over this past weekend. And I must apologize for my disposition lately, I pushed at the dark and it pushed back. So to all/any who took offense at my accusatory tone, I am genuinely sorry. When I write in that way, I hear it differently than it comes across. I can get myself so worked up I feel like a cornered animal and behave accordingly.
I pushed at the dark and it pushed back.
Hey OB. I wonder if a better way to put that might be "I pushed a little dark in, and hubski pushed it back." (but I don't know everywhere you've been over the last few days, so I'm just supposin'.) I'm glad you chilled with a good book and a good friend.
- My editor, whose status is such that there's no possible way I can even vaguely quibble with his assessment SO THAT'S GONNA BE A TREAT On the plus side, the manuscript is only 177k words, not 300, so I don't have to cut out 180k words I only need to cut out 50k and make the remaining 120k EXTRA SPECIAL EXCITING. And thanks to my research into the "John Kennedy Toole" mythos, I now have ample reason to just fucking edit the book instead of thinking I'm some misunderstood genius. On unrelated note, I'm 30 minutes away from being a certified social media strategy expert, have learned more than I care to admit about the implementation of ADA2010 and a pretty good sense of construction prices in two different markets. All of which is knowledge I'm really looking forward to forgetting in about six months. You need to ruthlessly go through the manuscript and cut it to 120,000 words rather than the 300,000 it now seems to contain.
Hey if you end up blowing up like Stephen King, you can always go on and release an unabridged version The Stand style. Then you can revel in your excess.
Well, I haven't yet - like I said, half an hour away. But you get them from pretty much anyone who will sell one to you and they're worth substantially less than you pay. I'm doing it because I did the audio for the guy who did mine (long story, friend of a friend, etc) and since I could literally just do them in pro tools it wasn't much of a stretch to give me access to the certification course. What you learn, basically, is how to do marketing in a universe where neither Adwords nor traditional marketing mean fuckall any longer.
Oh well, ain't got no spare money to spend on that stuff right now. I guess I'll have to figure out Instagram by myself then ;) And with this stuff, it's hard to guess if you're getting scammed out of your money or not until you actually pay and look through the course. My boyfriend lost a couple thousands on these "everything you need to know about SEO" scam classes back in the day. I hear facebook ads are creepily effective nowadays. Facebook knows way too much about us...
Speaking as someone who has seen the metrics on what you spend and what you get, if you spend a shit-ton you'll get... something. The only reason I sat through it is a PR person wanted us to pay $500 a month for three Facebook posts and a newsletter. We would then have to pay $200 ea. to get the Facebook posts promoted. When I asked her for a case study where they did this and what they got, she jubilantly exclaimed that they'd spent $1800 on Facebook promotions in a month and gotten 750 likes, 6 requests for proposals and 4 clients. She was psyched about this. We were kind of gobsmacked that she wanted us to pay $2300 for 4 clients.
If each client is worth a couple thousands, then I say it's worth it. But honestly, anyone with a little common sense can come up with a decent social media campaign. You're way better off taking the class than paying some lady (that might not even know exactly what she's talking about either). People in my city can't even use Adwords properly... A lot of towing and cleaning services targeting the word "Montreal" on google. Not really the most effective way to spend your money since I mostly see them when I google "montreal weather" or "montreal restaurants". I click on their ad every time tho and think "I just made you pay a dollar for nothing!"
The past three weeks have been INSANELY busy, much more than I anticipated. A couple weeks ago I estimated and sent out some bids on some very large project at my office. Last week I switched to a "working vacation" out West to fill 6 months worth of open-to-buys with my wife for her store. It was a tough one this time to fill all the OTBs with things we were happy with (but we did it). While there I found out I probably won both jobs which represent probably 20% of our business for the year, and have been tweaking numbers and spreadsheets non-stop since then to button things up and lock them down. Still have a bit more to do today but I feel like I'm out of the woods with the one finished up and the easier one left to do, but any relief I'd have felt shall be postponed as my boss signed me up to give a presentation and sit on a panel in front of a few hundred peeps at a tech conference hosted by one of our bigger clients on Friday: ecib: "Setting aside the fact that I hate public speaking, what exactly is this conference about and what is my role to be? boss: "Not sure. They wanted us to present something and I just said "yeah" and signed you up. You know more about this stuff than me." ecib: "..." boss: "It'll be fine, just sit up there and say smart things." ecib: "Not cool at all dude." The presentation is Friday, I've been out of town for a week, and one of my biggest pet peeves is having to speak to a group where I don't feel 1000% prepared to deliver on the topic. I still don't have any details other than a general theme (technology in k12 education). So my brain is already deeply fried, and I've got to wing this presentation (which will be fine frankly, but I won't be at ease till it's over). I rarely feel this way, but this is one week were I'll be looking forwards to Saturday. It's all good though :D
I'm of two minds about posting this here -- but it's not very long and in case anyone else suddenly finds themselves on a panel or moderating a panel, here's the instructions: (I'm having trouble copying this so it looks okay. Sorry if it looks messed up on your screen - which is probably different from my screen.)
Important Step: When organizing your panel, be sure to give all panel members guidelines. Let them know the topic, the format, the names and specialties of the other panellists, and most importantly, the length of time they can speak. Instructions for the panel moderator: 1. Thank all participants for attending and explain the purpose (topic) of the panel.
2. Introduce the panel members, including yourself, and briefly describe the
background and expertise of each panellist.
3. Explain the format to the audience: Each panellist will speak
in turn followed by a question period.
4. Pose an opening question or point and set the panel in motion.
Ask the panellists to respond.
5. Keep the discussion focussed. Be aware of the topics or viewpoints that
will be covered and steer the discussion to address them.
6. Keep the discussion calm and courteous. Allow equal time for opposing views.
Keep the discussion moving.
7. Keep everyone involved. If panel members are silent, invite their opinions.
8. After the presenters are finished, invite questions from the audience.
9. After question period, invite panellists to make final statements.
10. Make a closing statement. Sum up the consensus and add any impressions or additional
comments you have about the discussion.
Thank the panellists and audience for their participation.
Damn Lil, busting out the Panel Bible here :) I'm just hoping the panel host does a good job on # 1 right about now ;) I can speak on network implementations in k12 settings no problem, and I can field questions. My plan is to do more question answering than presenting. I'll let the host do the lifting there, especially since I wasn't given a very specific topic. I think most of our presenting will be brief in our area of expertise and this will be more reactive as I'm understanding it.
Note: Panel discussions have a moderator. Panel discussions have a topic. Panel discussions then have 3-4 panellists. The moderator may or may not know what he or she is doing, but if they do, then there is a standard panel format. The moderator should be in touch with you and let you know how long you have to speak. Anyway, bravo overall.
Phone things: Holy crap. You guys. I've been using mostly stock android for forever, and just put Nova Launcher, a new icon pack, and a whole assortment of new widgets and apps onto my phone and it's amazing. Feels like an entirely new and more powerful toy, don't know how I didn't do this earlier. While I'm using a pretty kickass calendar app I'm still thinking about buying some Moleskines and starting to keep track of things on a more physical basis. Another thing I've recently installed is Coffee Meets Bagel. Oh no, a dating app...but it's interesting because you only get one match per day and if both parties like each other then you're matched up by SMS? I think? Just installed it yesterday after a bunch of people said I should start thinking about dating again and don't have the animation talent of 8bit (which is awesome by the way - I expect an update tomorrow).
It is two weeks now that I haven't eaten meat. This morning for breakfast, I went to whole foods and got some eggs, pancake and vegan sausage. If you ever get a chance to try vegan sausage, do yourself a favor and skip that chance.
No idea. A friend said she met her current boyfriend on it which made me go "dafuq is that" and impulse download it. I can almost guarantee it will be gone in a week.
I'm using Cryten. So much pastel. So clean. So circular. It's nice, and has a bunch of other options for things. I'll move on from it eventually but right now I'm feeling it. Oooooh. Never heard of Tasker, but it seems like it would pair nicely with Nova. What do you use it for?
All sorts of shit. If my phone is on silent, and my mom calls me twice, then it'll switch to rumble on the second call. It'll switch to full sound on the third - because obviously the call is urgent. Right? Right mom? You didn't call me three times in a row to tell me to wear my boots, right? I actually think I stole that from Klein. When I plug my phone into a wall, it's screen dims, wifi and 3g turn off, and the screen turns off faster. Features return when I unplug. When I'm on my way home, I have a button I can press that let's my sis (who is usually messaging me) know that I'm mid-commute. Then, when my phone detects my apartment wifi, she get's a message that I'm back home and can begin messaging me again. I also narrowed this down to only work on specific days and times. A fun one is to just change my phone's ringtone with every new call. The OH SHIT alarm - if my phone is face down, and the screen is off, 30 minutes before class starts, trigger an alarm. There is a 95% chance that I have been oversleeping and am about to pay the iron price. When I'm not on home wifi, have my passlock enabled. When I'm at home, leave it unlocked.
Convince me to ditch Google Now. I have a friend who is amazeballs over it but he also thinks Hangouts is the shit despite its utter inability to parse MMS. One nice thing about going from iPhone straight to OnePlus One: pure, unadulterated Cyanogenmod. I've played with Samsung's version of Android and yeesh. Also: bitmoji. Bitmoji is hilarious.
Now is only useful if you want to know flight / package status, commuting time or sports games frequently. Nothing that other apps can't do. The rest of its features is mostly filler. My advice is to drop it like it's hot. The only real use is when you're abroad, because the combo flight status + instant Google Translate + currency exchange + route to your hotel is truly amazing.
I'm not sure how I missed this, but one of the main issues is with Cyanogen OS being closed source off off something that should be open, even when one of CyanogenMod's focuses is maintaining open source at all costs, and OnePlus refuses to give a reason for it. http://www.slashgear.com/cyanogenmod-jabs-at-oneplus-os-closed-source-os-13368969/ They also keep doing... pretty incompetent things overall, as outlined in the story line below that blurb. They seem to be after money and only money, and don't really care all too much about ensuring anything else. Their mess in India shows some of that as well. Some more on that from OnePlus here, which also shows OnePlus as not super organized, but this is squarely on Cyanogen. As well as this absolute clusterfuck they created with Focal. Beyond that, they closed everything off and made themselves into a company, selling the things that have been built over the years but dozens of volunteers, and are refusing to compensate any of them in any way for the world, but are keeping the profits. They're also pretty terrible at respecting the employees they do pay, and but I suppose being shitty is within their rights here at least. There's just... a magnitude of things they've done since going incorporated, from unethical business practices, to poorly run business, to moving away from the purpose of an open source project, to mistreating employees. In the end, what they're actually producing hasn't been up to snuff either. If you're into it, look up some of the other roms available out there and flash one of them. Most are FOSS, community built and maintained, and way better than CM or Paranoid.
I may get there. I'm still in the land of baby steps with this thing. Appreciate the insight, though. I'm on a OnePlus because an iPhone 6 plus would have cost me in the neighborhood of a Nissan Versa lease and in an Otterbox, would legitimately be bigger than a TI85 (can confirm - friend did this and we put them side by side). Alls I knows of Cyanogen is it kicks the shit out of what LG ships with. Maybe the next time 'round I'll get dramatic but I'm already seeing cracks from the places I opted 3rd party.
I saw your post on the Versa. Something's fucked up there. I legitimately think my next phone will be the YotaPhone 2. I'm downright giddy about it, because I would almost exclusively use the e-ink screen, and the potential with customs is through the roof. I also have emails disabled. I never clear my notifications so I always have a full record of my conversations going on.
Ungh, Cyanogenmod is a beautiful thing. Hangouts is...not the shit...there isn't a single video utility that I'm really happy with, though Firefox just released a chat service which I'm looking forward to trying out. As for Nova: The main reason you'd want it is if you want the ability to customize everything. Plus it's pretty damn fast. But I can control the way just about everything looks on my phone, and what gestures do what, and it gives me a lot of options for organization. Haven't used Google Now, so I can't really compare the two.
Google Now is basically "swipe left for Big Brother." It will helpfully give you search results for that search you did while logged into google from your computer earlier in the day that told you all you needed to know. It will also give you the weather of that place you were in for three weeks but haven't been back to since September. What was kind of hilarious was the bugs. At one point I looked up "Superbowl" to see what time it was playing. For a month it gave me "Superbowl" headlines that were, in fact, about Suge Knight.
Dammit it was white and gold. Then I saw blue and black. I didn't think it was possible. http://swiked.tumblr.com/post/112073818575/guys-please-help-me-is-this-dress-white-and
Finally done with my exams today, I feel I can finally get shit done :) During exams,i just feel bad going anything other than studying so I always end up refusing to go out with friends and just work on personal projects. I more often than not end up watching tv... Not the most efficient system but I still haven't figured out any other way. Otherwise, I'm volunteering for a big marketing company's mandate for a TEDx event. I think I mentioned it before? I'm in charge of writing the emails and stuff and my colleague does the graphic stuff. And honestly, she's not great :( Deadline is tomorrow and they keep refusing her designs. Maybe they are just really picky but the bottom line is that the presentation is tomorrow and I hope she figures something out or we're both gonna look like crap. I wish I could help her out somehow...
I find it completely impossible to do anything I don't feel like doing without caving in and watching TV, browsing wikipedia etc.. Though one thing that helps me a lot is music, particularly rap and piano. What program does she use? You may be able to aquire a better one from our friends with eye patches down at the bay. ;). I wish I could help her out somehow...
It's not about the program she uses, it's about the fact that the designs she creates keep getting rejected. I just hope she can come up with something that will get approved. I think she might have overestimated her designing abilities and unfortunately, I don't think I have the abilities to help her out on that. Once she gets her design approved, I can help out with the different iterations tho, so fingers crossed.
My school is starting PARCC (common core) testing next week. Not a single administrator or teacher is pretending that this is gonna be anything short of a horror show. Not even Gov. Christie can support it anymore and he's the most stubborn fuck the world has ever known.
Tell me that at least one person has made a PARCCore joke, then proceeded with a heel-click, or vaulted a railing.
Some asswipe clown started texting me from an anonymous number last night, claiming to be someone I know. I ran through a list of who it could be and they denied every one. Instead of then identifying themselves, they decided they were going to continue to try to talk to me when I have no clue who the eff they are. This morning I told them to identify themselves or they'd be blocked, end of story. They said, "Your so serious. You won't block me :)"
Seriously I'm ready to cut a motherfucker
Yeah, I'm trying to think if there's any way this is NOT high-school behavior or why I would want to talk to someone who's choosing to approach me like this, and frankly, I can't come up with any good reasons. Maybe I'll sign the email address up for porn mailing lists.
Thank you, Ben. I think I will. at the end of the day I'm pretty sure this was a really stupid move made by a coworker. Can't be sure and it seems far too stupid a mistake in terms of business etiquette for someone with an Ivy BA and pretty-decent MBA to make, but it's the most obvious and generally-fitting answer.
FINALLY got OpenGL to do what I want again, thanks to rob05c. I would have got it right much quicker if I stopped bothering with glRotatef for camera rotation sooner, which I'm still confused about but gluLookAt serves fine. Next step I think is textures, but first I'm going to make a shader manager thingy mainly to remember the index/ids/locations of uniforms, and maybe attribs later depending on what they are haha. So I'm back in charted territories for now which is a treat. And we have a desktop on our local network with a bunch of movies + all of Breaking Bad on it hosted on it, so there's a movie and BB frenzy around the house. I just watched S4 E11(penultimate), it was great. Any Breaking Bad fans in here?
