kleinbl00 pinged me to let me know that i won! i am so happy that people found my dad's motorcycle story interesting :)
I debated going with the tag #middleeast because that's my region of expertise and there's always shit happening there, but I decided to go nonpolitical...
It's been used a bit, but let's make this the inaugural week for #styleski
Here are some suggestions if you're stuck:
- show us an item you're pining for. mine right now is this killer pair of boots on anniversary sale at nordstrom but i just cannot spare the cash rn. generally i hate Michael Kors but this has all the components I'm looking for
- ask for advice! run outfits you've been too hesitant to wear outside by the good people of hubski and we can help you tailor (huehuehue) it and make it ready for execution
- find interesting couture to share with us. my pick obviously has to be Alexander McQueen (RIP) F/W 2006 Widows of Culloden collection because just look at it how could i not
That's an antler headpiece btw
Hey, I hear the value of those things has gone wayyy down lately.TRUMP CARD
Small, tight, and black. I'd go the same route but with shorts. I'm really into that top though.
um those are my actual antlers. i ain't no phony.
A buddy of mine has been working on some awesome ones for a bit now : http://hello-jaska.tumblr.com/post/124077047284/ive-spent-the-last-year-tinkering-with-this
I, too, hate Michael Kors. I'm shocked those boots don't have a giant "MK" somewhere on them. Are you going for knee-high? (As in, just below the knee?) They look pretty tall in the picture, which is always a concern. This week is going to be awesome. I bought a new purse this week! Something that only happens once in a blue moon... Since it is brand spankin' new with the intoxicating smell of leather (and oh god so soft). Normally I'm too practical to be "trendy", but I'm bringing my A-game this season.
I think most brands are scaling away from the logos slapped on everything. That's very 2000s. Coach has totally rebranded and it's pretty tasteful. I'm short (5'4") so I'm looking for just below the knee. I tried to find them in the mall last weekend so I can try them on but no such luck... I looooove that purse. Fossil makes very tasteful pieces. I'm angling for a new work purse as a graduation present come spring and I'm looking for something like that.
Agreed, Coach has some gorgeous purses. I think that's why I've liked Matt and Nat for some time too - just very simple, very elegant purses for every outfit. Definitely try them on! It's super important for shoes to fit well, especially if you're trying to make them a staple for your wardrobe. Right? I highly recommend the Sydney satchel. Everything else I've found is generally much bigger than this, but it's the perfect size and comes in so many colours.
I'm the kind of person who needs to carry everything with me all the time, so I love huge bags. When I was looking for my first work bag, I was very tempted to buy diaper bags because they're so huge I can carry my laptop and notebooks and paperbacks etc with me at all times. I know this is terrible for my back but ...
A confession: I am a hetero man, but I love women's shoes. This pair for example is amazing! First, its a boot, big win! Then, its black and simple. There is not much complexity to it, but it makes it so beautiful... The thing is, there SO many options for female shoes that I get jealous. There are also a variety of male shoes, but I dislike the majority of them >.< /end rant And, I support a Middle East tag at some point. Even though there is so much middle east stuff posted here, that it doesn't need a tag. Are you a historian?
Aren't they though??
I've been looking for a good, tall black boot with minimal decorations that doesn't look too stripper-y but also doesn't look too frumpy. oddly enough, my style inspo for this was... condi rice???
whatever. i'm into it. I am not a historian. I'm an International Relations scholar though.
These are my boots. They are Carolina 116s. They are 16" waterproof steel-toe vibram-soled all-leather boots. They are not made anymore. I purchased my first pair in 1991 and resoled them twice. Unfortunately I wasn't so good about keeping them supple and eventually they cracked past the point of usefulness (a hole you could shove a quarter through, or a hot dog). I purchased my second pair in 2003 and have resoled them once already. They have been through three motorcycle accidents. I do not know what I will replace them with, but I figure I have eight years to decide; more if I keep them oiled. they're great boots. I think I paid $75 for the first pair and $120 for the second.
Condi looks like she's about to open a can of whoop-ass in this photo. Matrix style.
right? i think as an aspiring sec of state, she's as good a style inspiration as any
So the top score was on comments within this post and when I checked actual tagged posts, technically the highest scoring post was 8bit's and he wouldn't accept the nomination
Yes. It's #reasonsrd95isawesome. Trust me, I'm just as surprised as you are but I welcome the conversation.
Serious question from someone who has the fashion sense of a blind platypus: what the hell is going on in all these pictures (except the boots)? Is this an actual outfit someone would buy and if so where would you wear it? How much does that cost, like $5000? Are those real eggs?
You know how auto shows usually introduce concept cars that you'll never drive, they'll never make, and are basically the designers masturbating on foamcore to see what people howl about? And how eventually some of the stuff they did six years ago trickles down into something you can actually buy at the dealership, after it's been turned into a car? Amazingly enough, the fashion industry is more efficient than that since their masturbations only have to be sewn.
The pictures are high fashion so they're not meant to be worn by real people. The runway is used to inspire more affordable and more practical variations for retail lines to sell to your every day person. Think of high fashion more as a living art display; most collections have some sort of narrative inspiration and the runway show helps to depict that. And each individual piece is likely to cost $5000; couture is hand made. ETA: also not real eggs as far as i'm aware
Thanks for the info! Lots of questions, sorry. I figure that tag of the week is a decent place to learn about new things. If not, just say so. No worries! Do they tell the story or is it just music and the outfits with "styled walking" (not sure of a better term)? Seems to be an interesting inspiration for the creator. I can definitely see the artistic aspect, but holy crap how time consuming is that? How do they fund these things? I assume the retail lines relate to these pieces, but is it just color scheme or patterns or a smaller nest? What kind of folks grab tickets for the event?
son of a bitch i typed a whole thing and then closed the tab. it has been a long ass wednesday. happy to educate! ask away. i think the combination of staging, music, outfits, ambience tells the story. having never been to a real show, i assume there are programs that give a little background on the theme or the designer comes out to speak on it for a bit. it's massively time consuming (in the range of hundreds of hours) and that's why this shit is expen$$$$ive. the path from amateur sewer to designer is kind of a mystery to me. it's something that interested me when i was a kid and Project Runway was new and shiny, but I gave up on that pipe dream because I can barely sew a straight line on a sewing machine. i think it starts as a hobby for a lot of people, those who can go to design school, people take apprenticeships and work on their own portfolios, and either try to sell to a mass retailer or start your own business to manage your line. i think a lot of people go through a starving artist phase because you have to. good input products are expensive and there's a loooot of competition.
with regard to retail, trends translate from the runway usually by way of colors, patterns, and cuts. for example, pictured here you can see patterns of 70s inspired fashion, gingham, and dancer inspired shapes. Pics below if you don't wanna click through 70s' gingham
