It was late and I was tired. It can easily be restored.
You can still see the number of badges you have to give in your profile.
Let's try it for a few days and see if I can be redeemed.
I like that it removes the focus on how many badges one has. It's not a competition.
It's not bad, but personally I like less "things" when possible. The minimalism of this site is a huge part of its appeal to me, especially when a lot of sites I visit like Autoblog, Youtube, BBC, etc. tend to be more than a bit busy. Hell, this site could be nothing but plaintext and I'd love it even more.
I love simple and minimalistic sites. However, the hub wheel is the only way I check for replies to my posts and comments (I don't really use my email that often, it's just easier to open the browser and go to Hubski directly). Taking it away will, IMHO, reduce functionality. But then again, maybe you're right.
"now go the rest of the way and ditch all of the ports" -Tim Cook on the latest macbook design You know I'm just poking the bear for fun (as fellow mac users and apple haters)... but for me - minimalism is great until you start stripping away core functionality. I know you may not use the wheel - but some kind of notification is key for me to use the site.
Was thinking about it. Just not sure how to do notifications.
Yeah I almost never go thru notifications using the clicky on the site either - if you get a lot of responses and try to use the clicky to sift through them, it's very easy to lose track, stop early, etc - not see all the responses you have gotten. Email for sure. Plus if I am fast and spastic enough I get to read responses before smartasses regret and delete them and then people think I am a ninja.
Holy shit. 1,170 days in and realizes there's a place to quickly see your notifications. That's insane. Clearly, we need to communicate that better.
To add: If you send me an email and I respond to it on the site, I'm done. I've completed my experience. I've crossed it off the list. If Hubski has memory left hanging out because I didn't know that I need to click on the wheel and click "dismiss" in order to make your site run better (hubski), then I think it's safe to say your UI is biting you in the ass. Especially as - you know what? - I'm tempted to leave that sucker teal just because teal is a less ugly color than grey and since you insist on me staring at a grey meatball whenever you use the site, I'm a gonna take matters into my own hands. How you like them apples?
Since we're talking about the emails here... I'd love it if the emails had a link to the parent and/or top level of the comment being emailed rather than just allowing for a reply. It really only saves one click but it just feels like those emails don't match with other ui elements on the site.
Well c'mon. The fact that one can use email and the fact that one does use email should demonstrate TO THE SITE that the reliability of email is of higher value than whether or not the Eye of Sauron is orange, teal or grey. This is a case of form forcing function. If I've done just fine for three years and only noticed it now, I'm not the problem. It's your feature set.
Never said you were the problem. In fact, I was pretty overt in saying we need to communicate the function better. That said, it seems to be a function you wouldn't require. However, someone like steve who says Hubski doesn't even have his email, relies pretty heavily on it. Perhaps it's one of the HUGE laundry list of optional settings. I do like the idea that if I reply to something it automatically gets removed from my notifications. We should have that. You might be surprised how functional it is though. You can ignore something for a day, come back and reply. It removes the sense of urgency I get from email. I know that I'll still see the comment. That said, it also makes me more lazy about my replies. Case in point, I owe rezzeJ a reply on a post I made and it's been making me feel terrible that I've not yet. But it requires time and thought. If I didn't have notifications, I probably would have sat down right away and replied. -End rambling thoughts.
I get that. However, the "sense of urgency you get from email" drives most of my being. Email is my prime scheduler. I don't like how when I click on the "you've got comments" button (be it on Hubski or Reddit), it ceases to remind you that you have shit to do.
Something nostalgic about the wheel now. You could put something more minimalist down and it would be just as good but I'd be sad for a solid minute before I got over it. Teal is my least favorite color, if that is what color the wheel is, my wife says that I can only see four colors.
I'm new here so I can't complain. And I don't remember how it used to look a few days ago but I think it's not that important to see badges everywhere, showing it only on the profile seems the right way to do it.
so... how about removing the username and the wheel... just put the logo there - and the logo can change colors for notifications (if you turn it on - I like tng.'s suggestion to make this a user preference thing) But seriously - the last thing I need is ONE MORE EMAIL coming in... having a visual cue that some one has interacted with me is huge. And back when you added the 3 color system - life got.... really good. and you should add unicorns and rainbows and whatever other UX additions we all suggest. Let's make this like Homer Simpson's car. that should be a CSS setting: Homer. We've got clean, dark, etc - let's add Homer. Homer will include ALL suggestions for the user experience into one interface. It will be terrible and beautiful. And of course... we must begin with insomniasexx's favorite thing of all time: HAMBURGER MENUS. (ignore the previous paragraph - I am significantly brain fried)
Many of us use email almost exclusively, including myself. There's a number of ways the logo and the notification badge could be combined, but I think people have come to rely on clicking on the logo to get to their default feed, rather than to go to notifications. Removing the name would mean needing to add a new way to navigate to your profile. I've been thinking on this, but haven't come upon anything really satisfactory yet.
yah - I should have said "ignore this entire comment". I know there's a ton of functionality behind the stuff you've got there. I didn't give a rip about the badge counter - I just like the wheel (or anything else) I can click on to get to my notifications. Maybe I will look into email... but seriously - there are just too many already. And I think some of the zen I get from hubski is that she NEVER sends me anything. It is self contained. I come, contribute, enjoy, and leave.
