I recently got a new fancy camera so I decided to film a little video to test it out:
I plan on going traveling after I finish school and I'm seriously considering starting a vlog thing. Partly because I really like making videos and love having stuff to look back and remember experiences but it would also be really cool if I could build a small following. It would help out a lot when looking for a marketing job back home after 5 months of "gap".
So yeah, just wanted to share but also I'd really appreciate some feedback on how to improve the quality (technically and story-wise).
Looks awesome! As a side note, 'vinyl' is both singular and plural. I'm not sure if English is your second language, but I wouldn't worry about it. It's even tricky for people that speak English as their first language. So yeah, don't say 'vinyls.' Vendors might try to rip you off because it indicates a lack of familiarity with vinyl. If using 'vinyl' sounds weird/awkward in a sentence, substitute 'records' for it. (I really hope this doesn't come across as condescending/pompous. I just wanted to point it out and help you guys out.)
Oh didn't know. I don't really know much about it honestly, I was just keeping company to my boyfriend :) But the funny thing is that somehow the random LPs I spot are usually the more valuable ones. Without knowing the artist of anything about vinyl. My boyfriend jokes that I have an expensive taste just wired into me. During this trip, I scored a Japanese print of a Jefferson airplane album for 1$ that is worth around 20-30$.
Oh, you make me all nostalgic! When I was in high school, there was a second-hand book and record store across the street from where I used to catch the bus. When I felt crap (because high school is the worst) I used to go in there and get myself an unusual record. It's been yonks since I thought about that place, but trawling through bins of scratched-up, dusty vinyl still makes me very happy.
I enjoyed the video a lot. I'd love to have a travel vlog to follow. I love to travel myself and wouldn't mind having a good place to snag ideas for trips for myself and the fiance. As for the technical aspects I think for the most part your jump cuts were good but there were a handful of shots you lingered on a little long that I would tighten up. For example the shot of your boyfriend from 0:32 to 0:35 could be cut at 0:34 and it would transition a lot smoother. I think the sped up shot that starts around the 1:26 mark could be sped up a little bit more to match with the speed of the other sped up shots. You got some great angles on your clips. The shots I liked the most were the the far off low to the ground shot with tons of vinyl between the camera and your boyfriend and who couldn't love that shot of pulling out that Rick Astley single. A tip for giving your edits more impact would be to edit to the beat of the music. It doesn't have to be rhythmic jump cuts but when you do decide to cut to a new shot it's best practice to try and make that cut line up with the music. I'd also tighten up the ending by hard cutting to black on the shut of the car door along with the silence of the music and have the end just be a handful of frames of black. Sorry about the long write-up but I went to school for this stuff and I've been having to brush the dust off my own shooting and editing skills with the job I've got now. I tend to think about the edits in every video I watch these days so hopefully I was able to give you some usable feedback.
Thanks, great tips! Very constructive! I do try to edit a little to the beat of the music but I've encoutered 2 problems with that. First, I'm not very a musical person so I'm not good at feeling the beat and second imovie sucks for precision editing and I don't always have the patience to mess around until I get it. I should download finalcut or something. I still have a semester left at school but we should go traveling around January. I'll definitely post on Hubski when I get started :)
I'd skip out on final cut. I haven't used it in a while but nobody I know likes X. If you want a no frills easy editor see if you can get a copy of Sony Vegas. It's really user friendly and as long as you aren't trying to do complex post work it's great.
what a great tour in to a day of your life. I love collecting vinyl, it's such a great hobby. Your camera and your editing skills both did a great job. You took something seemingly mundane and made it interesting to watch. It's great to see your smiling face elizabeth! Enjoy that camera and the new records. Also, I once toyed with the idea of a Hubski record exchange, but we never followed through. It would be fun though and if someone else spearheaded it, I would totally participate.
A record exchange is a great way of cycling though my shelf of "I bought this but never ever listen to it now" records. I'm probably not the one to spearhead it, but I like the idea.
Very well done. You even managed to work in a Rick Roll. p.s. I am an idiot. Watching it and thinking: that sure looks like Montreal then I saw the money and thought aha!.... and then I noticed your title.
I have visited dozens of times. I live in Toronto but a few of my good friends are in Montreal. I can't exactly say what made me think that it was Montreal but it just had that feel to it.
That place looks freaking amazing. I didn't know you were hanging in MTL! I'm just south of ottawa, we should have had a Hubski Meetup! I think there some TO folks too.
Kingston? Cornwall? Ganonoque? I lived in Ottawa for 4 years. Now I am in the Six. Can I say that now that Drake made it cool? Apparently. hahaha But yeah T.dot city is the place I dwell but a lot of my time is on my farm in the Kawarthas as well.
we're hoping War and ArtemusBlank might be able to join us too. It'll be 3 or 4 November (currently leaning a little toward the 4th). It's a Wednesday. Come one, come all to the great Filthadelphia hubski meet-up. I'll be in central philly - like... across from city hall. I think there are some bars and restaurants that could be easy to patronize. or we could just run the rockies steps... but I don't want _refugee_ to shame me with her nimble, fit self... maybe I need to go for a run tonight...
Around what time are you guys looking to meet and around what part of philly?
