I just "bought" this:
even though thenewgreen was going to give me his.
Yes, I drank the kool-aid. Now what? My nephew who speaks English as a third language says that my getting this phone was "a giant step for humidity."
Please geniuses of hubski, think of ONE thing that was useful to you and tell me (best tip/shortcut/feature/free download or whatever that I should embrace). Keep it simple. All suggestions appreciated. So far all I know how to do is send a text and make a phone call. Also I can make open windows go away.
I can kind of take a picture and email it. How do I get it up to a hubski post? How how? It gives me twitter and facebook as places to send it - but I imagine I have to send it somewhere that will see it as a jpeg.
1. Get a good case. Read reviews. Be wary of overly-minimalist cases and cases that don't offer much friction/grip. You probably already did all of this, but I want to re-emphasize the importance. 2. Take full advantage of the interfaces you can easily get to by swiping from off-screen. Swiping up from the bottom gives you quick access to control brightness, turn on/off the flashlight, and use the camera (among other features). Swiping down from the top gives you a quick summary of what your day looks like, according to Apple; itinerary, weather, etc., and you can customize what data it will fetch for you on this menu somewhere in the "settings". 3. If your hands are full or you're driving, look for the little (very little) microphone icon button that appears when the keyboard displays for text entry. The speech-to-words translation is pretty accurate. 4. Double tapping the home button allows you to see what apps are currently running. After double tapping, if you want to terminate a particular program/app, scroll over to it and flick it upwards and off the screen to close it. This can be good if you're running many intensive apps all at once, and need to close some so that you free up the memory (it takes a LOT of apps running to necessitate this). 5. Holding the home button for a few seconds (at the "home" screen) will allow you to permanently delete applications and/or move the icons around on the home screen. Most importantly, don't be afraid to push all the buttons. You're not going to break it by using it. Apple has made such a thing very difficult. You'll be up to speed in no time :).
Hey Am_ Thank you thank you. I need a case. I have a question (and might have more) When the phone reads my gmail, has it downloaded all the gmail to my physical phone or is it reading it off the cloud? I'm just wondering because there are 1204 messages up in the gmail cloud. Thanks Can I ask you more questions?
Sorry for the wait, it's finals week, exam tomorrow. Dude get a case ASAP!! A naked iPhone will throw itself at the hardest surface around whenever given the chance. Starting with the iPhone 4, they built the damn things to break their own screens, I swear to God. Probably a deal with the companies that build cases and other accessories. Both. The phone will download only some of the content from the cloud, usually only the last month's worth of messages or so. I couldn't find anywhere to adjust this in the settings, but it won't download everything unless you scroll down your list of mail so far that it retrieves more. The amount of hard drive space that this takes up is trivial when you have several gigabytes of storage on your iPhone. And of course you can ask me all the questions your lil heart desires :).When the phone reads my gmail, has it downloaded all the gmail to my physical phone or is it reading it off the cloud?
I love this app to get around big cities. Has some offline maps too, depending on the city. For Canada it supports Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto.
I second that. This app is way better than the official app to transit in Paris & Lyon.
I use very simple things on it all the time. I use "notes" to keep.... notes. I use the camera constantly. I use the voice memo application to record song ideas or even voice messages that cW calls evox. I use little music apps to create music ideas when on airplanes. I use audible to listen to books. I use soundcloud and spotify for music. I use Trello to manage projects, I have saved the links to Hubski's global and chatter to my homescreen. I use Uber, I use netflix, I use "upto" to merge my calendar with my wife's, I use the imgur app to post photos on Hubski, I use instagram to post photos of my kids for my family, I use bitmoji to add levity to texting from time to time. I use YouTube to watch elizabethtravel. But I use my phone for email, Hubski etc more than I do my laptop. I very rarely use it anymore.
Buy the app "Paper". This is one of those things that makes you realize you are living in the future you see in the TV ads. Technically, it's just a "note-taking app". But then there is this little camera button... so I took a photo of the room I was working in. I then clicked on the pencil button, and was able to draw on the photo. So I took some dimensions, some notes on where the studs were located in the wall, and then went to Home Depot and showed the guy there what I wanted to do. I could zoom in on the photo to show detail, zoom back out to show the dimensions I had written on the photo, and show where the studs were. It was... so simple. So obvious. And somehow totally magic, as well.
Try Chwazi! It's a wonderful little app that helps with decision making, such as who pays for dinner or who chooses the movie or who goes first in a game. It's solved many arguments for me.
To get an image on Hubski, a lot of people use [imgur](imgur.com) which should have an app on the app store (though I don't have an iphone myself). Installing that should let you "share" your photos to imgur, which you can then post the link to on Hubski! I hope that made sense, let me know if it didn't!
Thanks byonic and everyone else. The learning curve is steep, but I have a five-hour train ride tomorrow and if I don't kill any "trespassers" walking along the tracks or suiciders who park their trucks on the track waiting for the train to hit them (yes, I've been on a train when this happened), I'll have a chance to play with this.
I second this. The more you use siri, the more you understand it's capabilities/limitations -> I was apprehensive towards Siri until I got my 6s... it's quite handy when you learn how to use it. During my day when I take a break for HIIT, hand-eye coordination drills, piano practice, or any form studying, I just yell "hey siri, set a 15 minute timer" and it works every time. Unless I just turned on my phone, then I need to manually unlock it first. Siri is great in a new area: "Hey Siri, find me the closest Starbucks." "Hey Siri," is a function you can enable in your Siri settings.
Hey lil - turn off background refresh. http://appinstructor.com/blog/2014/background-app-refresh-explained Murders your data when you're not on wifi. Fucking stupid that it defaults, but the iPhone isn't designed for its users.
Assuming you like the browser version of Google Maps, install that on your phone. For me, there's probably no better utility. I forget how to sync it to your Google account, but it's pretty spiffy how well it works once you do. It also includes navigation if you're into that. I find that helpful when traveling out of town.
My comment was not meant to be taken seriously, but you have a point. If I was inclined towards self-documentation (and you all know that I am), I would webcam myself figuring out how to use this thing. And I would use the iPhone to record myself figuring out how to use the webcam in order to record myself figuring out how to use the iPhone.
Well you should download chess with friends. :) Free. It is from zynga. PM me if you do. They make you sign up for an account. The account is free. I don't know if they spam you or not. I used a fake email. I have been waiting for this day for years now. I am too excited.
