We are headed to my parents for Thanksgiving. My wife is a vegetarian so I am making a lentil and potato shepherds pie so she has something to eat.
What about you? What’s cooking?

We're eating the one on the right. 15lbs of Spanish Black. $10/lb. Don't care. Tastes like game. Heritage breed, every time, have done since 2009. The birth center had 15 women in dates at the beginning of the month. Mid-October we made the command decision that our traditional "orphan's Thanksgiving" should include the staff at the birth center because odds were exceptional that someone would go into labor and between two and four people would get pulled away from their holiday. So we're all heading over there. Our headcount looks to be about 15. The Coven have been pretty stoked about this idea; clients have been told for about three weeks that if they go into labor on Thanksgiving they will be expected to bring a side. 'twas a good decision as there have been four births since Monday and we've got a lady there who has managed to huff down all our nitrous, having decided to come in yesterday at 9am (we kicked her out until 9pm last night; I was informed by text that she managed to squeeze the kid out just now). One of our midwives and one of our students hasn't left for more than a few minutes since Tuesday. I have traditionally made the cranberries-and-clementines hash on the back of the Ocean Spray package, but over the past several years I have noticed that I am the only one who eats it. One of my wife's clients was a mid-level Food Network flak who gifted her with a cranberry and pomegranate chutney ahead of some cookbook or other and we've resolved to make it instead. However, since one of the principle ingredients is peppercorns I am often the only person who eats that also. My wife's family's traditional side is a cranberry "salad" which I refer to as "airquotes salad" to annoy them. It contains ground cranberries, crushed canned pineapple, sugar, whipped cream and mutherfucking marshmallows. The internet informs me that this is collectively called cranberry fluff and that it's likely supposed to be made with Kool Whip. However, as my wife's family considers Kool Whip to be takfir, the substitution of Kitchenaid-whipped cream somehow makes this monstrosity wholesome. I know there will be potatoes, smoked salmon and some veggies there. I know there will be turkey, stuffing, and two kinds of cranberries (too hot for anyone else to eat, and so sugary that everyone wolfs it down). Beyond that, it shall be a surprise. About four hours from now I'm going to have to figure out how to get a hot 16lb turkey into a Porsche 911.
Left turkey looks like she's done something sneaky to right turkey that she's not telling anyone about.
Onward! Edit: Also, when we first “met” the turkey on the left didn’t exist. She is adorable. Happy thanksgiving!About four hours from now I'm going to have to figure out how to get a hot 16lb turkey into a Porsche 911.
lol!! I feel like I have tangentially celebrated a lot of thanksgivings with you over these years. That may be my favorite grubski quote yet. Thankful for your friendship, pal.
The whole smorgasbord! Two turkeys and a ham this year. Ham was roasted. One turkey injected and roasted. One turkey brined and deep fried. This year was easily some of the biggest turkey successes I've had. Will be doing two small turkeys from now on instead of one large. Not pictured: Sweet and Spicy Bar Nuts, Smoked asparagus, bourbon ginger glazed carrots, shrimp fresh rolls, and all the desserts (there were a lot)
I got the bottle with the red label (which turned out to be carbonated), once someone told me that the machine would not take cash. I had a €2 coin, but had to use a credit card, and am pleased to find that I was charged only $2.29, almost exactly matching what Google shows as the exchange rate of €1 = $1.13.The pure and mineral-rich Dutch EARTH Water is bottled at a small water source named Anl'eau. This resource is located in the protected greenzone named "the Hunzedal" in the province of Drenthe. Anl'eau is named as one of the best water sources of Europe by water specialists. The production site is pumping pure spring water from a depth of approximately 150 meters. This groundwater has fallen as rain in the Middle Ages on "the Hondsrug"; at a time when people did not use harmful substances. After a long journey of approximately 1000 years through the ground, the water has absorbed many minerals. The water therefore is of a very good quality.
Currently making cranberry sauce. Also on the menu is a slow cooked turkey, stuffing, and some Ukrainian salad. There is probably more and other people are going to be bringing food as well.
kitchen remodeling so no oven, counters, etc so instead of "two giant pans of lasagna" it's gonna be some pita pizzas on the grill outside and some motherfucking bruschetta HOWEVER we are tminus 1 hour until our other thanksgiving tradition: griddled melts w/ bacon and whatever else you wanna throw on there pics incoming as the day goes on also happy thanksgiving everybody - i like the special appearance by minibl00!
My family used to be WAY bigger. We'd easily have 25 people at any occasion where food is served. Now it is generally the five of us - Mom, Dad, Sister, and my Wife - trying to figure out how to make smaller versions of the dishes we have made for 50 years, and generally failing. So we did a small spatchcocked turkey, and the usual sides, and pies from Costco. There was some cross-communication, so we basically wound up with 1 pie per person, but we did our duty (eventually, throughout the weekend), and all the pies got eaten. This Thanksgiving was about Games and Decorating. I got up into the attic and pulled down lights and ornaments. Put lights up on the house for my 80+ year old dad, and my wife and sister decorated the back yard trees and walkways with lights and baubles. I did some electrical work on some funky outlets around the house. We built a puzzle, and played a LOT of a simple dice game we have become addicted to. ("Dix Mille" is the only name we have been able to pin to it.) We then met up with kleinbl00 and the Balloonatic and their partners and offspring, and did the little village tree lighting ceremony and hot chocolate adventure. It was lovely and idyllic.
Have you all heard of stuffing waffles? Its where you take the stuffing that you made for thanksgiving shove it into a waffle maker and make the best savory sausage waffle ever. Every year I make a whole casserole pan of stuffing just so that i can make waffles out of it later. Maybe upload some photos tomorrow. Otherwise just the usual. Turkey, gravy, stuffing, taters, salad and pumpkin pie. It takes an awfully long time to get that all done from scratch as it is. Almost no pre made ingredients this year minus the stuffing bread. Stock, pie, gravy, all from scratch.
hey man! bout to start working on some peppermint bark -- 'tisn't the season, but it's what i'm craving. i'm doing a base of kit kat bars instead of dark chocolate, like a modern day shackleton. butternut squash risotto is the entree, but fortunately i'm not primarily responsible for that.
