"Tribute to my Left Hand”
stone
8x8x5” (20x20x13cm)
I’d always known I wanted to sculpt with stone, and with the gift card to the local art store my in-laws gave me as a Christmas present, I was able to pick up the necessary supplies and get sculpting. It only makes sense that this transition to a new medium would coincide with my thirtieth birthday (fourth of January).
I am personally baffled by how intuitive creating in three dimensions feels. When painting I feel as if I’m sculpting, and as I was working on this piece I felt that same energy coming through.
To be honest I’m not sure how sustainable this creation method is. My shoulders, neck, wrist, and forearms are quite sore from these past two days of sculpting.
Though, the itch to create with marble is reeeaaallllyyyy calling my name. Notice the spot in the sculpture where a part fell off?
Fun fact: this stone was originally 21lbs (9.5kg) and went down to about 6 lbs (2.7kg)
I might be into the idea of selling this piece, but since it’s my first stone sculpture I’m also into the idea of keeping it forever. If you’re interested in purchasing, send me a message and let’s talk ;)
Shoutout to Mark D Maker who’s youtube videos on stone sculpting are as informative as they are awkward
This is really great! You constantly impress me, man. You’ve come such a long way since I first met you here on Hubski. Marriage, music, moving, painting, and now sculpting? You are a renaissance man. I am excitedly following your artistic career. Onward! Edit: and happy birthday!! The thirties are great. Enjoy!!
Thank you for these kind words, they really mean a lot. I really do enjoy the Hubski community a great deal, you all have meant so much to me through the years.
Thank you b_b :) It's an interesting transition for sure. I feel like I'll still be able to activate my child energy, influenced with the learnings I've gained from my twenties. At first I was fearful of the transition, but now I'm at a point where I'm really looking forward for what's to come.
Looks great! You're a natural, sir Blob. What tools did you use to sculpt? Obviously not power tools, if your body's aching, right?
This is amazing work. I love the sensations your choice of line evokes. More than just being amazing art, it's honestly inspiring me to be more proactive with the tools of my own craft. Thank you for bringing this into existence and sharing it with us. Tempus Fugit.
Inspiring others to create is literally my driving force.
Thank you steve! I'll always share my work here, I love keeping in touch with my fellow Hubskinites
Thank you mk It’s freaky how intuitive the process was, I’m grateful for what the a universe has given me I’m deeply looking forward to this new decade
How did you get the design for the base behind the hand? That's pretty cool looking, and the discs/plates must have been a lot of work to get so thin?
I just kind of improvised the base design, the stone was asking for it. I used a file almost all the way through to get them this thin, which took so much time. One disc did break off though near the end :(
