My hope is that whatever is next is a reaction To the over glamification that we have seen in the last few years. I want substance, I want text, I want in-depth conversations, I want products that make me better not busier. I want products created by people with the motivation to make something interesting, knowing that profitability can follow and not at the expense of the products integrity. I want people creating products for the long haul and not the quick return. I can't say I blame Arrington for being "bored".
For a while I thought that Google Wave was going to be this sort of substance-based social media. It was a great concept that had the potential to combine social networking and crowd-sourced creation. Like if your Facebook feed was a series of projects for you and your friends to contribute to and build together. Sadly it was not meant to be...
As humorous as your statement is, I think his feeling is still a valid one. Right now, I feel like there is quite a lot of startup for startup sake.
That's the whole point - there's lots of shit going on, but Arrington is blind to it because it isn't in his wheelhouse. Because Arrington is over. "Startup culture" was an ephemeral anomaly at best. The fact that we're seeing the end of it isn't an "I'm bored" it's a "he's doomed."
This is what I think of when I hear 'startup culture'.
I don't want any part of this. I want reality. I want real true senses, not ones that a computer tells me I'm feeling. Sure, the brain could be compared to a computer in this sense, but it's not real, and I'd know that. We’re probably all just living in a computer simulation anyway. We might as well have some fun while we’re at it.
