After thinking more about my article submission HERE It has occurred to me that I don't really do much outside of the internet, as it likely qualifies as my biggest hobby. I need to find something to do that is outside this realm of the world wide web.
So what is your main hobby or thing you love to do when you aren't sitting at your desk?
So is a "hobby" something pleasurable that you do that does not earn you any money? Riding bicycles isn't a hobby; I rode to two entire seasons of reality TV on my bicycle. Motorcycling isn't a hobby; the only thing better than ripping up the PCH to Ventura on a shiny Saturday morning on a motorcycle is being paid to rip up the PCH to Ventura. Photography is now a hobby but back before digital it contributed substantially to my income. Audio hasn't been a hobby for a couple decades but it started that way. Writing hasn't been a hobby for ten years or more but it started that way. I guess nobody's paid me for the fish tank but I toss 20 or 30 of these down the drain every week. Nobody pays me to fly tiny helicopters but if you don't think I've looked seriously at quadcopters capable of lofting my buddy's Red Epic you're sorely mistaken. One of the best decisions I ever made was creating as much overlap as possible between "things I do for fun" and "things I do for money."
jemiller, I picked soccer back up as a hobby this past season. I then promptly snapped my metatarsal in half on the field and am in a cast. Pretty happy as it doesn't require surgery and it's not motorcycle weather here, so not a big deal. I don't even want to know what kind of luck would have a hospital writing that to you. Ow.
Yes, I just missed the start of a new season, but they are only 8 weeks long, so I think I might be able to play in the next one. I actually find out tomorrow if I can take my air cast off. I'm actually cheating and left the house without it today. The foot surgeon alleges that I'l be completely good to go in three months, and that was about a month ago so we'll see. I'll definitely be wearing an ankle brace for extra support though, as that's how the injury happened. I turned my ankle and extended the tendon that was attached to the metatarsal and it literally just pulled the bone apart. It sounds like I wouldn't want to have to face you on the opposing team, -you go all out don't you? ;)
Hey that's wonderful. All the best to you tomorrow. My ankle did a similar thing: as I landed on the outside of my foot, it pulled the tendons ripping them a little, but the tedons were still strong enough and the force of landing was strong enough to pull a tiny piece of my fibula off. This injury happened in August of 2012 and I didn't see a doctor until I reinjured it the day before new years eve. Even the day that it was originally injured, I played for another half hour before deciding that playing with pain that great would probably make matters worse. My devotion to the sport came to be three years ago when I was 15. Having only played as a hobby around the neighborhood and in a ymca league five years prior, I then felt the need for a more difficult challenge: high school soccer. The problem with that was that my ball control and tactical knowledge was subpar for even a 13 year old at the same level. So to improve and make the team, I studied and practiced for 20 days worth of time out of four months. I became addicted and that addiction is still apparent today. At deeper level, the challenge is really the addiction but I prefer the package to presented as soccer currently. This is a contributing factor to my being injury prone. Thanks, I try to go all out every time but my work ethic and skills aren't a fair match I suspect. What position to you play? I'm a striker/ attacking center mid./ right winger/ right mid.
Recently I played mostly defense, but back when I was in gradeschool I was a striker. Just make sure you take care of yourself and respect your injuries and body. If you really love the sport, take injuries as seriously as the pros do. You wouldn't catch a pro playing with a possibly broken foot or torn tendon because they are in it for the long haul :) You only get one body! Only 513 days till the World Cup in Brazil :)
I guess you're right, but being away from the game scratches at my brain like fingernails on a chalk board. The doc said if I don't heal properly and strengthen the are, I very well may continue to injure it. I love the World Cup! Prostitutes are apparently learning some English in preparation. Do you think the US will qualify? Mexico is the team I'm watching this time around. In 2012, they won most of their friendlies. They're are consistently competing well against Brazil.
I am a musician and play banjo and sing in a little duo. I also spend time with my parrots and dogs. I am great at sewing and make all of my own clothes, and sometimes make things for other people when they ask.
It really does! I generally will buy used things from Goodwill and will revamp them, make them into cool and unusual bohemian threads. I definitely have a unique look, thanks to learning how to sew. My grandma taught me, as I lived with her growing up. Oh! I also make really cool hair sticks and things! I forgot about that! I have very long hair, and make all kinds of hair swords and such to hold up my hair. Here are some hair arrows I made:
You have superhero, crime fighting hair. I love it.
You never know when you're going to meet a bear as you walk down the acequia. Good to be prepared.
Where are you and how can I get there?!?!?!?! That store is AMAZING!!!! Please tell your fiance that I adore it and her sense of style. :)
Haha, we're in MI. Anytime anybody has a positive emotional reaction to her store it makes her day, so I'll definitely let her know ;) She was feeling under the weather so I volunteered to mind it for her today. I took that picture when I saw your creations, -I swear they'd fit right in.
I'm a programmer and engineering student. I pretty much live in front of my computer. I do have a rather nice motorcycle though.
Listening to music, running, hanging out with my family, restauranting, cooking food and preparing cocktails. and my favorite: recording music #tng
Playing lacrosse has been a main hobby of mine for a while now, I love it. Such a fun sport. Other than that I'm an audiophile, listening to all different types of music is a big part of my life.
Reading has been huge my entire life, I love my kindle now and I read all the time.
Slowly learning how to play the guitar...
My main goal in life is to own a restaurant when I'm older, so another huge hobby of mine is cooking and forcing my family to eat what I make.
There are a lot of things I want to do away from a desk, but when I'm not doing things with my wife I'm doing something at the computer: programming, surfing, studying, gaming. I want to learn how to solve a rubiks cube more quickly than I currently can, play piano, learn better chess strategy, sing better, but I don't have enough time at the moment it seems.
Playing guitar and piano, playing outdoor rink hockey in the hard Minnesota winters, juggling, reading fiction, and working on projects around my house.
I tend to cycle through hobbies a lot, both the amount of time I spend hobbying around and the actual hobby I'm hobbying. As long as I feel like I'm making something or have some sort of creative outlet I'm usually pretty happy. Right now I'm in the middle of a project making a candle holder out of cats eye glass marbles for one of my stoner friends as a surprise. (And I'm finding out that not all marbles are exactly the same size which I'm finding out for this is a pain in the ass) I'm rebounding into an obsession with constructing buildings out of a single set of Jenga blocks, something I started doing after really stressful periods of work to distract my mind from the day. I played trumpet for 13+ years in various school bands and I still try to find excuses to bring it out when I can. Playing alone isn't nearly as much fun as it is with a band, though. Origami and very serious movie-watching are two of my most staple hobbies. I just started going through this box set of films with watching Head and Easy Rider, I'm hoping to watch the rest this week. In my last origami endeavor I tried to make my own tissue foil paper but it failed so miserably that I've steered away from anything origami-related for a while. I decided to make myself a wooden bed-frame from scratch on a whim last year because I needed one and had spare wood in the backyard so I guess that kinda counts. For whatever reason I tend to really private about my hobbies, though. If someone else is in the same room as me I can't do almost any of these things without becoming neurotic about what I'm doing. When I was making the bedframe I was living with 4 other roommates and I had to wait for the perfect weekend when no one else was around so that I could actually get to work on it. Oh, and reading. I was on a 2+ year reading dry spell but I went on a rampage this past year. I read more books than probably the last 5 years combined, enough to make me wonder why I ever stopped.
Rock climbing, hence my username. I'm currently nursing a knee injury, but I usually spend my weekends dangling off cliff faces. It's taught me an important life lesson, which is - it isn't about not being afraid, it's about continuing to climb even though you're scared shitless.
