If any of you remember me from Reddit, I'm mostly just a provider of entertainment - both SFW and NSFW. Is Hubski alright with NSFW content? Or will that just make people angry? Rhode Island is neither a road nor an island. Please discuss.
Hey Scopplamina. First off, thanks for asking. We aren't much into porn or gore for the sake of titillation. There's plenty of support for that across the web, and it's not our goal to provide more. I enjoy the occasional NSFW content as much as anyone, but our goal here is to provide a different kind of experience. I think there's some misinterpretation that Hubski is trying to do what Reddit does, but better. It's not the case. There is definitely some overlap in our goals, but it's far from complete. They have their mission, and we have ours. I don't want to be a replacement for Reddit. If people do submit a lot of content that's outside of our focus, they will probably rack up a lot of ignores. If that happens, it's very possible that they will stop showing up in the global pages. In that case, your posts are only visible to those who follow you. This is a work in progress, and we have some plans to possibly add a toggle so that users that want to see globally ignored content can toggle it on. However, we haven't settled on the final implementation of ignoring yet. It's a little too crude, we think. I hope that helps. BTW, it's not a 'road', but it is a 'rhode'. Perhaps for a 'rhode' to be an island, it needn't be surrounded by water.
My personal opinion is: please leave it on reddit. hubski isn't for porn. hubski itself doesn't have an official stance toward nsfw content. It relies on the ignore/follow system to get people the content they want. Very few posts cross a line that makes the site admins step in.
Scopolamina was shadow-banned from Reddit... if that gives you any indication of the type of content they plan on submitting. All they posted were gifs of car accidents, people getting hit by cars, NSFW pictures/gifs, and occasionally a random interesting picture. They posted to funny, wtf, the nsfw subs, and pics... that's about it. That should give you an idea of what they want to do here. His content doesn't make me angry or offend really, but I hit the ignore button as soon as I read the username.
Submit whatever you like, the people who enjoy that content will follow you, the people who don't will ignore you. At the moment, I don't think you would get a huge following submitting NSFW content, but that may change as the hubski userbase grows. You would definitely get a lot of ignores from people who don't want to see NSFW content in their feed, and therefore you would not be able to comment on those posts. I don't think there are any rules about the type of content you can submit - mk, could you confirm or deny? Hubski is all about cliques - people who follow each other and share each other's submissions. If you're serious about starting a NSFW community on hubski, I would recommend getting a few of your friends to sign up and start submitting that sort content as well. It's just like starting a new subreddit, except instead of trying to get subscribers for your subreddit, you're trying to get followers for your account. Right now most of the users on hubski are all interconnected, as seen here: http://hiiamchris.com/hubski/hub_graph/graph.html It would be interesting to see what would happen if more diverse groups of people who like different type of content start signing up. Personally, I don't think my own hubski experience would change much at all, since I would just ignore the nsfw tag and any other related tags.
mk, did a nice job of explaining what our goals of hubski are regarding this here. If it is not content that could conceivably spawn thoughtful discussion, we're not really interested in it. There are plenty of places for such things out there, Hubski is not one of them.
If that's official policy, you really need to make that obvious somewhere, like on the submit page. I really despise unwritten rules. Not to mention, how do you plan on defining what constitutes "thoughtful discussion" and what does not? Furthermore, how would you enforce it? I'm not saying I disagree, after all, thoughtful discussion is what I personally am looking for when I use hubski. However, I do think actively enforcing such a policy would be a huge nightmare. It's the same kind of subjective language that caused me many a headache as a reddit moderator. I thought the whole point of hubski was customizing your own experience - ie those who want thought-provoking discussion would ignore all of people who post humor/fluff, and those who just want a cheap laugh would ignore all of the "boring stuff..." and ideally, the two users would never cross paths. Am I mistaken in that understanding?
As I said in another thread yesterday, posts that contain uninteresting fluff will more than likely never be touched by us. The community can decide for themselves if they see that stuff. Posts that are porn will be eliminated. We won't try to dictate what is interesting, but we don't intend to be a porn hosting service. Period.I thought the whole point of hubski was customizing your own experience - ie those who want thought-provoking discussion would ignore all of people who post humor/fluff, and those who just want a cheap laugh would ignore all of the "boring stuff..." and ideally, the two users would never cross paths.
