I only wanted to see you laughing in the Purple Rain.
I would believe it. Prince comes from another dimension. His music always sounds current. IMHO there are few artists that tap into themselves like Prince. He obviously knows Prince and he channels him. So many artists can't seem to get the audience off their mind. Too conscious. Who decides to dress up like Louie XIV and sing a song called Pussy Control? Prince.
He does a lot of tiny shows around the Twin Cities when he has new material before he actually records it or performs them anywhere else. I saw him once at a show at the Dakota Jazz Club, probably no more than 500 people... most amazing live show I've ever seen (most amazing ticket price I've ever seen too, lol). He did another string of shows there recently at the same club here in town. He used a different drummer in a few of them because he was auditioning new drummers to see how they did live. http://www.twincities.com/localnews/ci_22377287/prince-perfo... He had tickets for the sound check, tickets for jam sessions, and tickets for the "Surprise" shows each night. I had a couple friends who went to a jam session and they said they were just in awe the entire time. It was pretty much just prince shredding and improvising for like an hour. They said it was the sickest thing they've ever seen. Perk of living in the Twin Cities I guess.
Someone, it may have been you, posted a video of prince performing at the Concert for George and it was awesome! He can shred. Such a talented guy edit: Yep, it was you and it was definitely worth seeing again.
The subtext of this scene makes it about 200% times more intense. The Kids dad just died, the band is at each others throats. Prince has been shitting on the girls music the whole movie, and for his ultimate lay it down sorrow jam he whips out one of the girls compositions. Playing the girls song stuff is funny, it's a reflection of the Prince reality, but he never plays the girls stuff. Morris Day and the Time was hardly a real band. All the album tracks except for vocals were all done by prince in the studio, the guys on stage and in the videos were just his puppets. The time hated it, but it was probably a decent gig. One time the bass player missed a flight and prince made some other guy stand on stage pretending to play while prince played all the bass lines backstage, a real puppet master.
I saw a bunch of broken youtube links in the Watchmen discussion, just a few days ago (scroll down to the series of links from kleinbl00)
I've said it before and I'll said it again, Prince is one of the most underrated musicians of all-time. The music that he's made usually transcends whatever sound he is going for, and he has a mystique all his own. I would love to see him perform live.
