Late this week and nonexistent last week ... I was on the road all day slash SEEING ASTRONAUTALIS blow down the roof. Even without his band. Goddamn. Best Astro track from This Is Our Science, just because why not.
Anyway, here's Heartbeat off of Childish Gambino's Camp. Sorry this is half-assed and I'm drunk and it's late but god Astronautalis was incredible.
EDIT: An unlikely cover of Dylan's great Boots of Spanish Leather by The Airborne Toxic Event. Fitting band to sing that song. Some of the other tracks/artists on the album don't fit together as well.
Sixto Rodriguez - Hate Street Dialogue Sixto Rodriguez - Rich Folks Hoax Sixto Rodriguez - Sugar Man He's an unreal lyricist. His genre is acoustic/bluesy. There's a really good documentary on Netflix about him. He was born in America, and after his career going nowhere, he moved to South Africa where it took off and he became Elvis-status. Later on in his career, he went on stage and shot himself - well that's what people thought. I'll let you guys read a bit more into it. IMDB: Searching for Sugar Man (2012) - Rated 8.2 by 11,410 users.
Like b_b, I was fortunate enough to see him in a small dive a few years ago in Detroit. For added poetic effect, the opening scene from the documentary was essentially the same for me IRL...walking into a smokey dark room, and parting the crowd to see a figure with his back to me leaning over a guitar that I could barely hear over the noise of the bar. Correction though, -he never moved to South Africa. A copy of his records somehow made it down there through the Apartheid sanctions, and he blew up, basically becoming equal in stature to Elvis and the Beatles. Because of the isolation of the country at the time, they never knew that theirs was the only country in the world where he was that popular, and assumed he was a global superstar. Meanwhile, he was living in Detroit, doing demolition of old houses, with his music career over essentially. He ran for some local offices, got a philosophy degree at a local college, and just did manual labor. Then some journalist/fan from S. Africa tracked him down years later and brought him to the country, -a triumphant return, where he played sold out shows and tours. The revival never jumpstarted his fame or career back home though, -that happened with the movie. It's only really been in the last few years, in the twilight of his life, that things have been really taking off for him in the States. cgod on here originally turned me on to him a few years ago. I'd lived around Detroit for a decent portion of my life and never heard of him before that.
I just came across a local (Detroit) band called Zoos of Berlin. They've got a new wave feel.
A friend got me listening to The Replacements, and I've really been enjoying their album Let It Be, especially the song I Will Dare. I've seen them described as punk rock Bruce Springsteen, whether that's good or bad... I also discovered a jig called 'The Stolen Kiss' which got into my head and still won't leave. I made sure to start learning it immediately. You can listen to it here - that's a direct download link. There's also Keep Ringing Your Bell by Kevin Devine.
This week i will post on behalf of my father: Back in 2008, I drove from Michigan to DC with my parents to see Obama's inauguration. I made a bunch of CD's for the car ride. My father was recently in a long drive and found one if the CD's I made, Wilco's *a Ghost is Born*, and I received the following email from him:I drove back from Peoria yesterday and decided to look into our onboard jukebox (your mom’s car). When we went to DC for Obama-1, you had downloaded some CDs. This enabled me to listen to A Ghost is Born. The volume was roaring and I heard it from beginning to end. What an advantage to be by yourself. It was awesome!
As for me, I bought a new shirt this week. The guy helping me at the store started talking music with me. Turns out we both love Sufjan Stevens and were talking about his performance on KCRW Morning Becomes Eclectic -an awesome program. He suggested that I should listen to Denison Witmer and I did. My response was "meh". Have any of you listened to him? Any different responses? It just seemed sort of typical singer/songwriter stuff. I recently listened to Transfiguration of Vincent by M Ward in full. What an amazing album.
Yes, that is my favorite track off This Is Our Science as well! I cannot wait for another album from him. Glad you agree that they put on a ridiculously good live show! This week I've been listening to a ton of Yo La Tengo , namely their album ...and then Nothing Turned Itself Inside Out, which is one of the best albums ever made if you ask me. I made two two-hour long drives this weekend, so I had to listen to a lot of music to pass the time. I did so by listening to a lot of Jack's Mannequin. Sometimes I'll get funny looks because I'm a fan of theirs, but you know what, if I want some emo tinged music with sweet piano, I'm listening to my boy Andrew McMahon.
That's what he opened with. It's been almost 24 hours now and I'm still reeling. He played Skeleton, some other old stuff, an unreleased song ("I know you don't know the words to this one yet so just scream whatever the fuck you want") and freestyled for a solid 15 minutes. It was the last show on the tour and he was out of merch so "just pirate my shit, whatever, I don't care." EDIT: that's a damn good Yo La Tengo album.
I'm jealous, he didn't play any unreleased material at the show I went to. Granted, it was very early in the tour. He closed with Lift the Curse, which was an incredibly ending. Really, put that song anywhere and it's going to be great. Glad you liked the Yo La Tengo album! Gregory Crewdson is a great photographer (he did the cover for the album).
I really didn't like grunge when I first listened to it in high school, but ever since I saw Sound City a month ago, I've been really into Nirvana. I don't know what I didn't like about them before; I must have been missing something. I can't get enough of them now.
Different things hit people at different times. I felt like that about Blondie, who I always heard my dad play on his stereo. Thus, it was "dad" music; uncool and unlistenable. What you're talking about it a little different, but sometimes with music, context can make all the difference.
Saw Tyler on Monday. It was an interesting show. Pretty tiny venue for what Tyler could be doing. It was only Tyler so he kept having to just stop halfway through a song. The crowd was pretty wild but I think Death Grips was crazier. They were all obsessed with yelling at Tyler and trying to insult him or get him to sign random shit. I also felt hella old being 24.
Shows like that seem like they're more a celebration of a scene rather than a night out with good tunes. One thing I dig about OF though is how much they just want to have fun. It's refreshing compared to someone like ASAP, whose maybe trying too hard to be a thug. And 24? That is hella old. Were they laughing at you?
:( OF does just want to have fun, but it felt like Tyler just didn't have the energy for it. I have to imagine he is burnt out. If I saw anyone giving me looks I just pointed to my beer and laughed at them. Those kiddies be jealous of my 21+.
I want a movie to end with this: Sam English - Gentle Eyes That Cradle Me And I found a shoegaze! Mint Julep - Cherry Radio
I used to love an Ohio band called Kaslo. here is all I could find of theirs online. It's been years since I've seen them. Their songs "Poopface" and "Furnace" are both great. I'm not sure they're even together anymore. I sort if doubt it. But if you happen to catch them around OH, please let me know.
Blush Response - Tension Strategies Transform | Transport | Transcend, a compilation of Viennese coldwave and postpunk revival bands. Great stuff, even if they are being precious and doing physical releases as cassette tapes.
Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica (It's pure genius, takes more than a couple listens though) John Frusciante - Niandra LaDes & Usually just a T-Shirt / Smile From The Streets You Hold The Velvet Underground - After Hours Can't get enough of these three
Omer Avital - Magic Carpet Some fresh jazz straight outta NY. This is the epitome of the evolution of jazz and its current state. On this track specifically, you have to wait a few minutes after the piano intro to really get into the tune.
Haha, yes, definitely good. The interesting thing about modern jazz is that it takes the principle from Jazz Fusion of using moods and textures over melodies, but still has a melodic backbone. There's a young group in NY who are doing this kind of thing and it's pretty hip.
Mika videos. Celebrate (featuring Pharrell) and Elle Me Dit are great.
Off the top of my head: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbKHRdo00yU and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvBXCiJDCxQ. Maverick Sabre's pretty good too (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8AD6DTiAZM and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVMWgmQA4Ig) - that last song has the greatest beat on it, love it...pretty unique voice too.
I discovered Enter The Mystery Magical Chambers, Wu-tang raps mixed into Beatles samples - really dope, and free to download. Also, I got got back into the Dancer With Bruised Knees album by Kate & Anna Mcgarrigle - really great tunes, refined lyrics and elegant production. Finally a shout out to whatever Minnesotan mentioned Atmosphere here a few weeks back - got chatting with a cute girl on Paddy's Day and we hit off over our common knowledge of them. Gotta date next week woopwoop.
Currently board-opping a pre-taped show for a co-worker who's out of town right now. It's a Latin American music show, so not what I normally focus on. But I'll be damned if it isn't a hot set. I was gonna start rattling off a couple of the highlights, but there are too many good ones. Can't beat a Cumbia beat for booty-shakin'. If you get the chance, just check out El Sonido on KEXP. You can stream it online if you're not local. Chilly's got consistently great taste. EDIT:
Actually, screw it, I gotta give a specific recommend to listen to *Cartao Postal* by The Souljazz Orchestra. That's a hell of a jam.
I am! I can't currently use it though. I changed the partition I keep my torrents on, but for some reason uTorrent refuses to acknowledge the new source; therefore, no seeding; therefore, no ration; therefore, no downloading. I really love the site though.
If you can read the drive from utorrent just redownload the torrent file and add it manually in utorrent with the same download folder. The tracker will realize you have the files and start seeding them.
I did hear that from the mods recently when I asked them, but we're talking around a thousand torrents. Would I have to go to each and every one to redownload? I relied on my constant uploading since most of my torrents weren't necessarily popular or were lesser known.
Hmm. If you are talking to the mods ask for some freeleech tokens to get back into it. They gave out a bunch at the begining of the year (I got at least 130) but they have expired now.
What's your username? You know you can also fill requests. I downloaded The Mowgli's off itunes and filled a request worth 261 MB.
