I have a rebuttal: I hope you read it with an open mind. I don't think you're wrong. I just think that there is a flip side (an upside) to the coin that you are not considering.

I want to point out that the original study they measured IL-6 levels. IL-6 is a pretty specific inflammation marker - I think the author of the article uses "unhealthy inflammation" for better readability.

The study claims that they can attribute 30% of the decrease they found in IL-6 levels from pretreatment to a 4-month follow-up can be attributed to mindful meditation. *bingo -- this is why I agree with you on the results of the study are probably not as significant as what the NYT article suggests. The authors of the original study do some statistical magic to arrive at this 30% number.

Studies have to start somewhere... You have to have some basis before going to larger - more impactful trials. No one is going to fund or carry-out a study for 350 patients without having some data in smaller sample sizes before. So, sure, smaller sample size study outcomes carry less weight/influence - but that doesn't mean they are all bullshit just because they have a small number. Small sample size studies serve the purpose for initial investigation - their impact SHOULD remain small but doesn't make it insignificant if a real difference is found.

And I think it is great that this study was done - alone it probably doesn't mean much - but it could lay the groundwork for more - larger - studies to look at mindfulness meditation and connect it with real inflammation markers.

Best of all - it's free! compared to the alternative --> meds from big pharma.

backing off but LISTENING. I think you still have to be present available to listen or else backing off is being turned off.

A lot of the top comments on this thread are pretty good... Please read and consider that outlawing is probably not the right answer in the real world.

I agree, I simply don't have the time to comment each day. It requires a lot of effort, that is, forming an opinion that I know will be scrutinized and read by many others. I want it to stand on its own. And then heaven forbid I comment on something controversial -- because I get in heated debates and the next thing I know https://xkcd.com/386/ . But yea, I find that I comment in waves as well.

and the amount of people that die from overdoses each day is about the same as if a 747 crashed full of passengers each day: http://www.drugabuse.gov/related-topics/trends-statistics/overdose-death-rates Should we stop prescription drug sales too? Im not trying to change the subject, I'm making the point that people die from legal things all the time. Car crashes kill people -- should we outlaw cars?

I have reasons to say that we should not mass broadcast mass shootings, especially when it is a single man or woman who acts alone and for motives that can only logically be described as a self promotion/remembrance. 9/11 was a well orchestrated and funded terrorist attack that required many participants and, as you stated, lead to the deaths of many many people, changed the landscape of an entire city and ultimately a nation. Shootings and 9/11 are only alike in the fact that people die/died.

I would like to turn the question to you -- why SHOULD we mass broadcast a school shooting. Releasing the name of the shooter and in effect "celebrating" them by making them the topic on the news for weeks?

Not a huge fan of the first song, lots of noise -- but then the number 9 and bari 3 killed it.

gee  ·  3428 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Coffee Extraction And How To Taste It

oh man, this is great! thanks!

edit:

I finished reading it all. I was really hoping for temperatures and times and things along those lines. Example: light roast, heat water to 185˚F , press after 5 mins with occasional stirring. Dark Roast: heat water to 165, press after 10 mins. etc. I guess what this does is kinda of help me train my palate what to taste for (well described, i especially liked the borrowed window metaphor) -- then, with experiment each morning, try and achieve that sweet, long lasting flavor.

gee  ·  3434 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: 20 years from now what will you have wish you had done?

Im 27. Im a pharmacist, a bad friend, a weekend alcoholic and Im quickly (over the past 5 years) losing touch with my family. I plan to correct these behaviors over the next 5 years (as change doesnt happen instantly) so I dont regret when Im 20: Drink less, if not zero. Use the money I save by not drinking to make trips to see friends -- FAMILY. It started earlier this year -- my combat with alcohol. Im doing better -- and recently just recentered myself on the path of social drinking (limit of 2 drinks), NOT drinking to get drunk. I have surrounded myself with friends who love to drink and enable me to drink -- its hard because these are great, genuine friends who are there when you need them. But, I've got to start telling them no in order for my own self improvement. Relationships -- I need to stop playing games with girls or fucking for sport. Honestly, it was OK in college (not really, hurting people is never OK...), but the games have got to stop. I need to be more open with girls I don't like. and more honest with myself about girls and relationships i do see advancing. Ive been blessed with natural good looks -- I need to wield that influence for good. I want kids - and in order to find an extraordinary mate, then I need to act like a one myself.

Exercise more and mediate more (I saw this in someone elses post and i liked it). I feel so good after doing either. Yoga is awesome. SL 5x5 is awesome (although soon moving to more intermediate. I want to continue to do those activities and develop lifetime habits -- not the yearly cycle.

Future Gee: Grow professionally, grow spiritually, grow to be the best version of you over the next 20. Laugh and have a sense of humor on the things you cant control and apply yourself fully and delicately on the the things you can influence. Love your family more -- make big exceptions for them in your life. Go out of your way to be with them -- another weekend with the friends drinking? or a weekend with your pops on the river -- what will you wish you had done in 20 years?

gee  ·  3453 days ago  ·  link  ·    ·  parent  ·  post: Let's talk about Wes Anderson and the hype...

I think you have lost touch with the general public! Maybe you have surrounded yourself with such quality people you don't realize how many people are actually not aware of Wes. In my general experience the general public loves movies like the fast and the furious 7 or whatever. I think if you polled most americans about their favorite Wes Anderson movie -- I think you would likely get a "Wes who?"... I agree with you that he may be touted to highly by a subset of the public (maybe a lower level cinema class?) -- but I appreciate his approach.

quirky? Yes annoying? maybe. entertaining? always.
