There are a number of reasons why we did this, and I'll be happy to discuss the reasoning below.
To be honest, we have wanted to do this for some time. However, we didn't want to remove 'all posts' unless posts from new users could still be seen, and new content could easily be found. We think we have found an approach that will work.
In the upper right on your feed, you can see an 'external posts' menu. With this menu, you can now choose how many (and if any) external posts will appear in your feed. These posts are not from people that you follow, and they have not been shared with you. External posts have a light grey background.
I'm pretty sure that this will require some tweaking, but it needs some road-testing first. Let's try it out for a few days, and see how it feels.
Of course, feedback is much appreciated.
In addition, we have increased the number of people that you can follow from 50 to 100.
p.s. For those of you that requested Hubski stickers (http://hubski.com/pub?id=15526), I'll be sending them out this weekend.
p.p.s. You will probably need to refresh your browser to see these changes properly. (Sorry kleinbl00:))
UPDATE: I realized that we are not pulling in enough external posts. (Some differences between the test data and the production site, it seems.) I'm working on it.
UPDATE2: I pushed some changes to the pulling in of external posts. It can be a little uneven; if you are following a lot of people that have recently posted, that will force out external posts. But, that also means that it is unlikely that you are missing much new content. Also, I changed the options to 'few' and 'many'. Because the external post grab is uneven, IMO the granularity of choices need not be very high.
UPDATE3: I cleaned up the menu so it looks less janky, and I swapped grey backgrounds for blue text on external posts.
But I absolutely agree. Not pretty. As for the 3 elements, we could lose 'my feed' and just make that the logo alone, -the home page.
Easter egg hunting can be fun. As for newbies, well, consider it a very mild form of hazing for those who don't bother reading "about hubski".
Is precisely correct, imo. My feed is my feed. The toggling logo will allow me to cast a wider net. And you can put "all" under Hubski. Hubski | * | my feed
I'm all for improving it. I just don't know if that's the way to go about it. Or if the logo is used in a functionality, that be the one... I am going to think on the logo though. We have a message system among a couple other things in the to do list. I kind of like to put something up, use it, then clean it up in a way that feels appropriate to the use. is always pushing me to be less subtle. :)
Unfortunately, this wasn't the cleanest push. :/ Everything was smashing on the development server, but the choices are not pulling in as much content as I want. I'm working to remedy that.
http://hubski.com/lurk It's very similar to the active post page right now, but I will probably alter it, and use some other sources to give a good overview. How is that ?
After that you should be good.
A badged post? A post from someone you "mutually" follow?
All in all, going smoothly. Not jonesing as much as I thought I would be having to quit "all posts" cold turkey.
All in all, going smoothly. Not jonesing as much as I thought I would be having to quit "all posts" cold turkey. Hah, I wish it felt smooth on this end. You would think just setting a number of external posts would be easy, but it's not. Posts don't carry attributes as to whether or not they belong to someone's feed. So sorting the external from the feed posts is actually a little tricky. But usage wise, I think I might be ok with it. I simplified the choice to 'few' and 'many' right now though. I figure you either are really looking for new stuff, or you are not.
Then I realized how retarded it is that my 'Message wheel' didn't turn orange to give me this same information and option while I was actually using Hubski on my laptop. I have to have my phone (or an email program with notifications open) on me to take advantage of this. Doesn't seem right at all. :) Just a thought.
Fantastic feature by the way. If submissions are of consistent quality, I can easily figure out if I am following the user or not and follow him/her. Keep up the good work.
I'm going to start with "many" as the default and see how that feels in my feed. This is cool.
