The audio is to our most recent podcast on "Space".
You can follow this link to soundcloud to listen to the podcasts we have already produced. I am currently working on the next podcast which I hope to have done by Monday. But since there are so many new Hubskiers I thought I would ask your help in coming up with topics. What would you like the podcast to cover? Are any of you working in fields of study that you think we would be interested in hearing about? Do you have any life experiences that you'd like to share? The topics can be broad or narrow in scope. They can be about the sciences or the human condition.... etc.
So what I'm asking is for three things:
1. Topics
2. Who wants to participate?
3. Constructive feedback on what we've done so far
Also worth mentioning is that steve is going to be putting some of the podcasts to video too, which should be very cool.
So how about it? Help a fella out....
Evolution! People don't understand it very well, and I don't just mean religious fundamentalists!
You're right, they don't. I have a feeling that theadvancedapes would be glad to assist in this one too. Is it something you are familiar with or would be glad to discuss?
Of course I'd love to help if you wanted to do a special podcast on evolution. It is a massive subject so it would need to be organized and divided up properly. But explaining evolutionary basics would be a great intro evo podcast.
I'm familiar with it, and if I were to speak on it I'd rather talk about the Genetic Algorithm than anything else. Artificial Life is one of my favorite ideas ever.
I'd love to participate. I'm moving into a new house where I hope to host a podcast of my own, but my studio isn't totally put together yet and the house needs quite a bit of work. That said, I have the capacity and the desire to contribute, but as a newski (nailed it!) I'll need to listen to the backlog in order to get familiar.
Newski -I like it. Please do listen to the backlog. I think you'll find that I've gotten better with the production. They're getting tighter and the sound quality is better. That said, I like that some of the users are more distorted (phone conversations) and others are more legible (studio). It lends texture to the conversations. Some people always sound like they're recording in a tunnel though -b_b for example. mk just uses his voice memo app from his iPhone and it works fine. No need for your studio to be set up to participate. Any ideas for topics, aside from "FUN"?
Mostly interested in FUN, but also: comedy, education (work would be great for this), poetry (featuring littlebirdie who is writing most awesomely here, seasons, homeownership, ownership in general, single-player gaming in a multi-player world, criticism, ecstatic truth, translation, disease, gravity (workin' hard or hardly workin'?), memory, personal finance, the occult, insurance, experimentation with hubski markup, Scottish fiction, relationships, addiction, penmanship(?), the supernatural, the hereafter, public history, and work.
The next topic is especially broad, but this should give us a good glimpse in to some of the Hubskiers we have. Have a listen to what we've done thus far. Again, I'd be really happy to have you participate. I enjoy your comments here. Why is there a Hubski podcast
The honest answer is that I wanted a creative outlet since I've moved away from The New Green but it has become more than that. I began incorporating users from Hubski that I didn't know and it became a way to have a discussion around a topic with my fellow hubskiers.what are its goals
only to create a narrative around interesting conversations and events and perhaps be a catalyst for further discussion here on the site. Also to give a glimpse in to the personalities here. You can gain a lot of insight in to a person via the way the converse both on and off line.who is the audience
We are. This is for us but should it be shared beyond our walls, hopefully it is a good representation of the type of people we are and the type of people our community would like to attract.I'd be happy to help in some way, but the concept is a touch vague.
We'd be lucky to have you on board Saydrah. The concept is vague by design, this way it can change, shift and hopefully remain "fresh".
I am a BIG fan of This American Life, thank you very much for the comparison. I've been struggling for motivation to begin my next one and I think you just gave it to me. Seriously, thank you.
Idea about a topic: Your first family computer Different for each age, but for me I have a bit of nostalgia about our first commodore 64. Booting up to play International Karate. I also just love thinking about how our family computer was in the living room, opposite the TV, as if in a constant stare down for a battle far into the future. Our family computer, it was something we all kind of used together too. It represented a parents investment into their children. I feel like that's been lost a bit. There are tons of people on Hubski that are insanely knowledgeable about computers. It could be interesting to hear their stories about their first one. Just thinking out loud...
Its a good suggestion and your assertion isn't lost on me. We used to love going to my cousins house because they were the first to get a computer. We would all spend time around the computer playing games. Adults and kids alike. This has been lost to a degree.
thenewgreen, you really need a frequent gaming podcast. Skyrim nerd talk joined with COD talk. The indie game favourite. It would... Just rock.
I think an Interesting way to present some podcasts would be actual discussions, between users with maybe conflicting views on topics. Like a talk show, featuring different users and thenewgreen as a host!
That would be fantastic.... but it would require a hell of a lot more planning and coordinating of schedules etc. In short, it would be very time consuming. As it is, I tend to send the same questions to people and use their answers to construct a narrative. Some people I'm lucky enough to speak to in person and others over the phone. If we were to do the evolution podcast, I do have a feeling I'd like to do a point counter point version.
Couldn't Hubski just get a Vent? That would provide a heck of a lot of material. If used correctly...
It currently only works for SoundCloud. You simply just add the basic link to the url field. Here was the post on it. It's pretty clear I need to improve the FAQ page.
A while back mk made the embedding of audio from soundcloud a part of the Hubski experience. It's a cool way to share music too.
I would absolutely love to participate in a podcast if you guys would allow it. On topics we could do updates to Hubski, any news circulating about Hubski, and then go to topics about recent events, that would cover the introduction period and go off on what other ideas that you have in mind.
I'd be glad to include you in a podcast Cortez, for sure.
Are you saying that the podcasts are "fun" or that we should make Fun the topic?
Yeah, I agree with you... and now hiss that FUN could completely make a good topic. It's broad enough to where we could get many aspects of what makes something "fun". From an evolutionary standpoint do we know when hominids started to "recreate". -Could turn to theadvancedapes for that. As far as a broad topic goes, that's not a bad one.
I am actually preparing a paper for publication at the moment on the topic of chimpanzee play. Play, as it turns out, is a widespread mammalian activity pattern. Any guesses why? You'll have to wait and find out on a future thenewgreen podcast!
I'm thinking it very well might be. Could be a great way to include a lot of people and get to know them better. YOu in?
If "fun" were the topic, can you give me an example of a question you would ask?
1. Think in terms of just topics can be limiting. Trying out some themes may open up some interesting connections between different stories that may seem unrelated. For example, This American Life and Radiolab do shows on things like: Bliss, back to school, lost & found, etc. Maybe thinking of some bigger themes and soliciting ideas based on that would open up some interesting stories to pursue. 2. I could find probably find some time for this. 3. What I've heard so far seems to be a pretty good early effort. Production is better than most podcasts at a similar stage, but it can still get tighter and become more fluid. Pacing is something that Snap Judgment does very well. You may want to listen to that podcast to get some ideas on your structure and production methods. I love listening to podcasts, so I will naturally want to listen, but there needs to be something that is more "sticky" about the show. Stickiness is a concept that Malcolm Gladwell talks about in his book, "The Tipping Point" in a chapter about what makes kids continue to watch shows like Blue's Clues and Sesame Street. It focuses on children's television, but the concept of "stickiness" can be helpful in shaping any creative pursuit: http://adonis49.wordpress.com/2008/10/23/the-sticky-sesame-s...
1. This is great advice and the programs that you mention are certainly ones that have influenced my taste. I am a student of public radio and both This American Life and Radiolab are offered in my listening market. I immediately have a number of ideas that are more broad in nature but that could easily be used to create a narrative. Thanks for the nudge in this direction. 2. FANTASTIC. I'm currently in mid-production for our next podcast on Silence, but I will be reaching out to you for a future production and look forward to your contribution. Thank you for offering, it is humbling given the quality work that you and George produce. 3. Thank you, when I get to a point where I am not getting better or learning more about how to create the best listening experience and tell the best stories, I'll stop doing it. As of right now, this media challenges me quite a bit and I enjoy that challenge and I"m learning a lot. I am a musician and I get the same type of "Zen" , in the moment sensation from mixing these podcasts as I do from recording music. I've listened to snap judgment, you're right about their pace, it's really well done. I've not read the Gladwell book, but I am pretty familiar with "stickiness" as a marketing concept. I'll look in to this and see how I can apply it to the podcast. Wonderful suggestions crshank, thank you VERY much.
That would be great BLOB_CASTLE, I'm about mid way through producing the next one but perhaps the following? I look forward to it. Thanks.
Topics: Sports, Animals, Architecture, Computers, The Brain I would have no complaints in participating if you need a panelist. The only thing that I would critique/ am confused about is, it doesn't sound like every is having the conversation at the same time, it sounds like there are separate conversations spliced together (which maybe the best solution due to everyone's schedule).
You're right, everyone is having separate conversations and some of them are audio sent to me from questions I provide. It would be pretty difficult to get everyone to participate at the same time. Plus, it's not really what I'm going for. What I'm interested in creating is more of a mosaic of different personalities around a common theme, then weaving a narrative. If you couldn't tell, Im really interested in using music as another character throughout the podcast too. Thank you very much for the suggestions on topics, they're all great. I'll definitely be reaching out to you for both participation and for suggestions on the topics. More to comeā¦
Yeah I like the vibe that sound and music play. And the mosaic formats reminds of a NPR program, I can't remember the name however. The sounds quality is pretty great when compared to other startup podcasts. Can't wait to participate.
Topics: The wonders of chocolate milk. College experiences/choosing a major. Favorite music/why. Natures effect on the psyche. Computers effect on the psyche. Something about monkeys for theadvancedapes. I'd like hearing about any of those haha.
Nice, thanks for the topics. That's what I'm talking about. "Choosing a Major, Chocolate Milk, Nature and Computers are all great ideas. We already did Music but it's a great topic and it would be fun to do again eventually. Thanks! Are there any topics that you'd be willing to participate in?
I would participate in just about any of the topics that people are posting. I like having cool discussions about random stuff
I have a side question: Where did you get those hubski stickers? I'd love to have one or two, and I'd gladly shell out cash for them!
PM me and I'll send you some. No worries about $, glad to share them.
