WE HAVE A LEASE WE HAVE AN APPOINTMENT TO REPLACE THE FURNACE We're Working On Permits our daughter loves the fuck out of Washington And in a week, I take off for six weeks to run around this place for money. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go out to my cousin's house to weld the leg I cut in the wrong place back together so I can cut it in the right place so I can weld the feet on correctly so I can rip it up to the sticks for sandblasting and powder coating before I have to go play Audio Rambo.
If all goes as planned, I will meet steve for the first time IRL. We've created a lot of cool stuff over the years together, TNGPODCAST's, Hubski welcome video's and the most recent interview with elizabeth. -Yet I've never met him in person. I'm looking forward to it. The startup I'm working on has a big couple of weeks ahead of it. Things are snowballing in a good way.
So we left for Budapest (via Moscow) on Oct. 26th. We lived it up in Budapest and Athens, Greece and we are finishing up 36 hours in Rome. Rome may not have been built in a day, but we conquered it in a day. 8 hours, 12km, only by foot. I am okay never seeing old buildings, tourists, or walking behind terrible walkers again. Apartment -> Il Sancta Sanctorum -> Basillica di San Giovanni in Laterano -> Colosseum -> Lunch - > Roman Forum -> Altare della Patria -> Piazza Venezia -> Piazza Navona -> Gelato -> Ponte Sant'Angelo -> Corte Suprema di Cassazione -> Castel Sant'Angelo -> Piazza San Pietro -> St. Peter's Basilica -> Sistine Chapel... and back. Photos randomuser is tripping out on the artwork and buildings and everything. I mean, we've been surrounded by architecture and art that was created centuries before the US even "existed". We've been drunkly discussing art, the creation of stuff, how old shit is compared to the US, and how utterly horrible contemporary art is. He noted that even if all this was created for "God" or "gods" (in Greece's case), what was created back then makes everything moderately modern look like child's scribbles. It's night and day.
Awesome photos. I also went to Rome a few years ago - did a similar amount of walking, but 5 days in a row. That's what you get when you're on a trip with your Latin teacher, I guess. What did you guys think of Saint Peter's? I'm not a religious person but that immense building was awe inspiring.
I was relatively disappointed with Rome. I really enjoyed the sights and stuff, but the lack of organization makes it a very unfriendly place to visit on your own (not as a group). They really give priority to the group and group tours and there are practically no signs (especially at the Vatican) for people like Kevin and I to figure out where the hell we are supposed to go and what line leads where. The line/bus to the airport this morning and our flight (we are flying Ryanair so I guess we can't really complain) were both abysmal in terms of service. All in all, I'm glad we got in a trip stop in Rome and got to see the main sights, but I honestly hope to never return to Rome and Italy in general has been pushed pretty far down our list. There are thousands of beautiful awesome countries out there - I don't see the need to visit this one again. Also, so far, Budapest has been my favorite place. The friendliness of everyone we encountered (bartenders, random people on the street, airline staff, etc.), even with a the diversity of languages/people there, and cleanliness/safety puts it at the top of my recommendations. Plus, it's dirt cheap. 1 euro beers everywhere, amazing large-dished meals, etc. etc. I knew Rome would be more expensive but man, we have Italian food back home that doesn't cost 19 euro a plate and doesn't expect you to buy a bottle of wine with dinner.
Yeah, I can totally understand that. I liked Rome when I went there, mostly because we went with someone who knew the city like the back of his hand. We only had to wait like fifteen minutes to get into the Colloseum. But just like Paris, it can get so awfully touristy at times that all the other people can ruin the beautiful architecture and art that is there. I've heard awesome things about Budapest - it's much higher on my list than, say, Venice. Ryanair is godawful - they're like the Denny's of aviation. Especially when you're 6'4". The only airline I've heard worse about is Aeroflot.
Oh. Man. We flew aeroflot from LA to Moscow to Budapest (350 usd) and I had less than zero issue with them. Their food was old-school shit hot airline food, but they included a fat bread roll with butter and Chocolat mouse which made up for the inedibility of their hot food. From Moscow to Budapest we got an orange juice, grapes, and breadcheeseham sandwich, which was perfect. We flew Ryanair Budapest to greece and greece to Rome and Rome to Marseille. It's the Rome to Marseille people who were terrible though. I told Kevin (because I've been warned about ryanair) that we should count our blessings that it's the only ducked we've gotten.
Wow, The Steve-Steve meetup, the Philly Meetup, the Toronto Meetup... this is a week of Hubski IRL!!! I'm getting myself ready for the Toronto meetup, and also for a meetup with the lady I want to study with for my next stage of education. Stressful, but also a lot of excitement involved. I've been writing an article on a piece of music with what I think is an interesting story. anyone interested in looking it over? (not totally done yet).
Do you mean proofreading? Or looking it over for fun? I suppose I wouldn't mind either but mostly I'm curious about a piece of music with an interesting story. How does a piece of music acquire an interesting story, other than being carried out of the Sistine Chapel in the brain of Mozart? Possibly it was a labor of love?
the interesting thing about the piece is that everything about it as it is sold today is a lie. pm me your address if you want to see it. It's still quite rough, and not 100% finished.
Got off a conference call a few minutes ago with most of the other research coordinators participating in my study. My site continues to have the highest number of patients enrolled, best looking schedule for new patients, and the biggest problem I had to report was 'I can't enroll more patients until you send me more pills to give them.' After getting off that call I feel substantially better about where I'm at with regards to my job. I've been doing this for ~4ish months and I have enrolled more patients and have higher data quality (Fewer errors per patient per study interaction) than people who have been doing this kind of work for decades. I can't and won't claim full credit, but it feels good to know that I seem to be in all measurable respects a solid professional peer with valuable insights. Total side note, who else is dreading the approach of the holiday season? I wish I could go through one winter without a single mention of pseudo-religious market holidays. Group meditation tonight, supposed to have an appointment with my counselor tomorrow, but I think I'll move it back a week. I'm feeling good hubski. Edit* I'm also super jealous of everybody going to the Philly meetup. Have fun y'all!
What do you use when you're performing data analysis? Edit: Also, I don't like the holidays very much. Lotta family members have passed away around Thanksgiving / Christmas so my family doesn't handle it very well. Kind of can't wait until it's January.
I'm working on a CV(Here a CV is the shorter one) that I was asked to provide for work experience, I'm a bit stuck on the education section. Any tips in general are appreciated :) http://www.filedropper.com/cvunfinished2 (Make sure you click the right download, the file is a .pdf) It's for IBM, they've been letting Coderdojo use a whole wing of their Cork establishment every Saturday for the past ~20 weeks and I've been leading classes in HTML, JavaScript, and currently Android, which is what got their attention I guess.
I really enjoy resumes for some reason, so I hope this isn't too nitpicky. Don't take it the wrong way if I have a lot of feedback, I go into a lot of detail. Anyway! One thing I'd like to see more of in your resume is bragging! The best resumes often include evidence that other people think your work was exceptional. Do you have anything like that you can include? Header - include your full address and phone number in the real thing, and any gits or personal sites to share Recent Projects - I don't love using lines of code here, do you have more braggy metrics you can use? Viewed by X people, ect? Anything that shows positive feedback from peers. I'd also include rough dates. Right now your resume just shows you took a course in 2013. HRs first question is going to be "what have they been doing since" - In the summary for ragnarok "provide high and low levels tools for game development with low limitations" is a little odd wording. A game engine isn't a tool. Tools are tools. Low limitations for what? Low hardware limitations? Low barrier to adoption? "open source ... ect with the goal of enabling game developers rapid creation of 3D ragnaros style games. The engine achieves this through simple, explicit interfaces, concise developer tooling and extensive help documentation. - Anything else you can sell about Gazpacho? Why is it different, is it better then other pomodoro timers? Ect Technical Proficiencies - For the web browsers is that using them or developing for them? If it's the latter, say so "Debugging tools for ..." ect - Anything relevant from computer hardware you can move up here? Education - Can you make the home education bullet a little more formal? Do you have a GED? Put your highest level of education and the date completed so something like "Home educated, GRE certified in 2012" Did you get any awards during this time? Experience - Also needs dates. Do you work anywhere else? Non-technical jobs can get a bullet each or so, shows you understand the corporate world. - "Volunteer mentor" doesnt sound quite right, sounds like you're a teacher? If that's accurate I'd use it instead, mentor has a less formal label - Anything you can do to brag in this section? High student satisfaction, student attrition, ect? If not list some of the stuff you've done. Developed class plans, authored all written exams or homework, ect. Taught can be a bit vague. Interests Wikipedia seems a little odd for the space bullet, I would drop that one personally That's really exciting IBM reached out! Interview prep can be intense for big companies, let me know if you need help / have questions!
Thank you very much! this is really good advise. Don't worry about me taking it the wrong way, you obviously have good intentions and good advise, nothing else matters :) I feel it's necessary to clarify that this is "Work experience", which here in Ireland is unpaid work young people(I'm 15) do before they get a job. Most people wouldn't put in this much effort, but I am because it will definitely be helpful when I apply for more a permanent jobs(As will your advise. Again, thank you.) Recent Projects Unfortunately not. Dates are a great idea, without a better metric, would you say it's worth keeping lines? Also do you think adding dates will make the hours spent redundant? Good point. What I was getting at was that the goal is to provide fine and coarse control, which actually sounds like a good way to describe it. How does "Currently creating an open-source, multiplayer-oriented game engine with the goal to provide both fine and coarse control over game development." sound? Also, "extensive help documentation. " manically laughing, I really need to get round to writing documentation. It's difficult to bother when you're the only one working on a project. It's pretty new right now, most of what make it different are planned features(I take it they won't care about planned features?) However, I did add "Reward system with separate scoring topics" as a bullet point under a "Current features" Technical Proficiencies I built my desktop, which I don't think is that impressive, so I don't plan on wording it as a big deal(Is that a good idea?) Education We don't use GEDs here, but we have a similar "Junior Cerificate" and "Leaving Certificate". The latter is more important, but people doing work experience wouldn't have finished it yet, so they would use the Junior Cert. I have not sat the Junor certificate as it is not nessaceary for college(If I want to go to college), and I also have not won any significant awards. That's why I'm having difficulty with this bit, would it be suspicious to not have an education section at all? Experience That's true, but we're actually referred to strictly as 'mentors' to keep it informal, much more fun that way. For the purpose of a CV, Mentor should serve okay, right? Coderdojo is very informal, you just show up at any class with a computer, say 'hi' and you will be shown what to do. As a mentor, sometimes I wish it were more formal when people show up 30 mins late, and I'm half way through my material. But it makes up for it with all the fun bits of being informal. /rant, I won't have student attrition stats on anything like that. I have prepared material, but only 10 5-7 page PDFs, would you say it's worth it? Didn't think about that. How does "Airsoft, Cycling, Computer Hardware, Competitive games(C&C, CS:GO), Space, Creative outlets(Programming, Sandbox games, Image editing)" sound?I don't love using lines of code here, do you have more braggy metrics you can use? (...)

Omg you're 15. You are killing it buddy! I thought you were college age, this is a great resume for someone so young! would you say it's worth keeping lines? Also do you think adding dates will make the hours spent redundant? I think I might leave off hours spent and put a date range, but that is up to you, definitely works either way I'm being nitpicky but I would drop "the goal". you said creating so they know its a work in progress. Which provides sounds a little more focused and definitive you and me both buddy. its just an example of a kind of thing you can hype about your project. any software engineering things you do right (source control, documentation, testing, user feedback, ect) are good to add Your resume is going to guide how your interview goes. If you have super cool things you want them to ask you about, sure, include it! "Key differentiators include future fancy new thing one, two and three" is a fine bullet to add, just don't get super wordy You are totally fine here, I was trying to beef it up because I thought you were older. For someone your age this is very impressive. You can probably leave computer hardware in hobbies No, it seems totally fine to be where you are. Just include dates (2000 - present) so they understand you are still in school. Anything still in progress should have an ending date of present. Did you take a programming class in school? For the purpose of a CV, Mentor should serve okay, right? Sure, mentor is fine. Definitely can sell that! Able to teach a wide range of students with varying technical ability and programming background. Flexibility is a great skill in software! If you prepared it, great! Say you did that. Creative outlets(Programming, Sandbox games, Image editing)" sound? sounds great Really impressive. If you get to phone screen or interview let me know! I have some tips for how to handle those too.Recent Projects

Stay tuned. The one year mark for the Sunday Paper is this weekend!
I'm sick. Star Wars EP 1 tonight. Friend from college is out here this week and I'll get to see him tomorrow. Weekend is kind of planned out (Go Sounders!). Oh and we have a refractometer at work which is super exciting! More toys to play with. I had a realization late last week where I started to feel like an engineer.
Did you read this yet? I kind of want to re watch TPM and see how I view the movie with this theory in mind.
I wish it were true. JarJar is easily the worst character of all time. The scenes with him in the Senate are so damn painful. Any scene where he speaks with Qui Gon Jinn are painful too. In fact, it's all very painful. That would be quite the long game for Lucas and he doesn't seem to play the long game. I honestly hope that JJ or somebody remakes the prequels at some point. Just erase them. That would be amazing.
BrainBurner yes, and I want to believe in all of that so bad, but I agree with TNG on this one. Doesn't seem very Lucas-y. TNG, have you heard of The Phantom Edit? I think you'd find they make major improvements to the prequels.
I watched episode 1 last week with my daughter. My wife came in 1/2 way through and said, "wow, this really is cheesy and really poorly acted." All I could do is say, "yep." I'm totally down with watching all of them prior to the new one but damn, I can't wait to get to episode 4.
This week has been busy so far... We've been a barista down at the cafe and are getting smashed. I've been put on the espresso machine to get shots going and it's terrifying (and awesome). But apparently the coffee still tastes great, so I can't be screwing up too much! Went out to the pub with a friend last night who is missing his Canadian ex. Probably drank too much (he definitely did). Feeling slightly seedy now and there's a thunderstorm raging outside. I really didn't feel like getting up this morning! Also, I received hubski stickers in the mail :D I've been instructed to take photographs. I'll post them after work!
ooh neat. wanna swap brain scans? I have an MRI from a few years ago that I always want to show people but have no way to tactfully say "wanna see pics of my brain" to people who aren't my friends in med school
They were looking for anything that might be causing migraines. Came back "very healthy"
pshaw you're just saying that because of my well developed frontal lobes
i was super bummed they didn't let me see my gallbladder when they took it out but i was also hella doped up so i probably wouldn't have appreciated it
Most everyone in my intro theatre class are assholes. And none of them take the class seriously at all. Right now I'm supposed to be working on a scene with a classmate. Instead, I just had this exchange over text: Him: "9:30, right?" Me: "No we definitely said 9." Him: "I recall 9:30." I sent a screenshot of the message where he said "9 sounds fine. See you then." Him: "So, I'll be there in 25 min regardless." It was important that we start right at 9 because the space we're using is only available from 9-10. But now we won't even be starting until 9:35. 25 MINUTES IS NOT ENOUGH TIME TO GET A SCENE READY GAHAKQLWDOSK
Because only 29% of the people in Kentucky could be assed enough to go out and vote, I get to deal with a dysfunctional State government for the next four long years. fuck. When I voted, the place was full... and I was the youngest person in the building by a generation, easy. This is why Social Security and Medicare are untouchable and education and youth services are cut to the bone. The political animals know who votes and they pander to them.
I think I'd like to try yoga as a way of improving my flexibility and being more active in the winter. Does anyone have any tips for how to start? There are studios in town, but I don't know where or how to begin.
Look up a studio near you (avoid gimmicks like hot yoga etc. especially as a beginner), take an all levels or level 1-2 class in Vinyasa yoga, which is the typical style at least in the US. Make sure you're pushing yourself patiently but fully, make sure youre breathing deeply and not holding your breath/tensing up. Be prepared for ludicrous quantities of strange humming, possible meditation, and a sore, sore ass in the morning. I was a 160-lb varsity wrestler with a messed up back and zero flexibility. Yoga once or twice a weekend had me all Jaden Smith in no time.
This was what I was going to suggest -- make sure it's a beginning class bc they'll help you with bad alignments which aren't actually the correct stretch. I have structurally fucked up hips and knees and yoga 2x a week helped me move without pain for quite some time. i should get back into the habit of 5-6 sun salutations a morning bc that shit warms you up quick.
Do you have insight on the different yoga types? A studio near me has beginner hatha yoga on Saturdays. How does that vary from vinyasa?
Hatha yoga is all about meditation, and it includes bikram (hot) and iyengar yoga which are the most common styles besides vinyasa. Vinyasa is what is going to challenge you physically, in your muscular strength, flexibility, and balance.
If you're not comfortable diving into a studio, there are plenty of YouTube instructional videos to get educated and familiar with some of the more basic poses. Sometimes my girlfriend will play one in tandem with an ambient soundtrack of rain falling, the sounds of a forest, beach, etc., and many of the YouTube yoga instructional videos already have built-in ambient audio.
Thanks, I'll give that a shot. I do want to try studios eventually to get some direction and correction, but being a bit more familiar will help. Total rookie question: can I just wear the same workout clothes I'd wear running?
Yep. The only problem might be a shirt that's too constricting. You need unimpeded freedom of motion. There is no shame in doing yoga wearing solely underwear or even going nude when in the privacy of your own home. It worked for Patrick Bateman, at least.
I went to the Lesmils body flow class a couple time at my gym and i think it's yoga. It's quite fast but poses seemed yogaish. I don't now what's up with my gym but we have a lot of things like bodyflow, bodypump, bodywhatever from LesMils.. who is that guy and why can't we call a yoga class a yoga class? Is there some king of copyright on workout routines? I don't get this stuf. But yoga is fun :)
I need tutoring for my homework, and there is no one capable of giving it without a PhD in the subject. So I don't get tutoring, and I can't do my homework. This leaves me feeling pretty stupid with no foreseeable remedy.
Nope, not from a text. We're using Sakurai, which is a horrible choice anyway, in my opinion. Issues arise when I have the equations in a form I arrive at independently and attempt to reconcile that with what I'm finding via google.
Lots of work....I'm starting three new projects, so there's a lot of background reading/work there. Plus I'm submitting a project to a conference in 11 days, so I'm working like mad to get a quick second experiment up and running on the web in the next couple days! If any of you use Amazon Mechanical Turk, you should totally do my study ;) Unrelated side note, I've been obsessed with Sibelius these last couple days.
