The Beatles White album is the first Beatles album I ever owned. I listened to this album a lot when I was a kid. It's one of the reasons I asked for my first guitar. I was just 11. I listened to their song structures a lot and really studied why songs like Dear Prudence or Mother Natures Son moved me so much. This album and all of their work had a tremendous impact on me. I owe much of my inspiration for wanting to be a songwriter to the Beatles
WARNING---SHAMELESS PLUG---
The last pick is a result of the first two. I recorded "Elaborate Maps" with "The New Green" in 2010. It's the result of a lot of work with some really great friends. Most notably, bgood79 who plays all the lead guitar and sings most of the background vox and some of the lead vox too. I know it's a bit of a cop out but I have to pick this album, it means a lot to me and when I listen to it, it's like hanging out with friends and recalling so many moments in the studio etc.
Good times.
So what are your 3? Don't think too hard on it, just whatever comes to mind. I'd really like to find some new music so thanks in advance.
Yes - Fragile Todd Rundgren - A Wizard, A True Star Yes, I am old. :-)
Also, Rick Wakeman is a keyboard god.
They Might Be Giants - Flood
The Smiths - Louder Than Bombs (its a compilation but they had so many singles that it counts)
New Order - Substance (+1 ala mk) As far as Beatles go, thats ever changing too. Right now it's 'Hard Days Night' mostly because I just scored a late 70's Japanese pressing that sounds amazing.
But there has to be a reason they're such a beloved band, right? Iron Maiden is still huge outside the US. Are they still big in Brazil?
There are, indeed, those who don't listen to anything else. I was a BIG metalhead when younger. One of my first albums was Brave New World. Though I didn't listen only to Maiden, there was a time when I only listened to metal: Angra, Blind Guardian, Dream Evil, Stratovarius, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Accept. Mostly melodic and heavy, none of that black/dark/death metal stuff. To the non-initiated, it all probably sounded like this. (In an ironic way, I like this song. It's sounds like a parody.) I still listen to some kinda heavy stuff, mostly from the 70's, like Rainbow and Dio.
The question asked was very personal to me and I did think about it more than a few minutes. Lateralus is a great album. I saw Tool last Jan. 2012 in Toledo, OH. I think this was my fifth Toll concert. My buddy is a huge fan and that’s how I learned to like them. Did you post your three? I looked and didn't find anything.
RJD2-Deadringer Elliott smith- figure 8 Beatles-Revolver
I agree that Revolver and Abbey Road are probably two of my favorites, DEFINITELY Revolver. I would add Rubber Soul to the list though. Revolver always gets credit as the Album that transitioned them from "dance/pop" tunes to songs to be listened to. -For good reason, I could literally praise every song on it and its the obvious choice to carry the mantle as their "transition album". For No One -WTF? Could a song be any more painful to listen to for the broken hearted? The crunchy guitars on Taxman and And Your Bird Can Sing, Not to mention the lyrics or songs like Tomorrow Never Knows, are just fantastic. BUT... I think Rubber Soul is really a great album to see the transition in a more pure form from bubblegum pop to songs like I'm Looking Through You, Norwegian Wood, Nowhere Man, In My Life and even George's If I Needed Someone. For my money songs don't get any better than "In My Life". They just don't. It's perfect. So, for me Rubber Soul is there best work. But ask me tomorrow and my answer may be different, not because I'm flakey but because their work is just that damned good. Wow, this was fun to think about. Thanks.
- What other album brings you into its own space more than that one does?
This is the album that really made me fall in love with the Fab Four. But Pepper and and Abbey Road are both definitely a close second.
Don't get me wrong though, I really dig listening to it.
Also, kick ass drum solo. The longest Ringo ever had on an album. A lot of people claim it was Paul playing but both Ringo and Paul have said otherwise. How about those guitar sounds at the end? Whew!! Awesome song! Awesome juggling!
12 Girls Band - Miracle Live Sarah Brightman - Phantom of the Opera
They started out with 12 and then decided that more was better. :)
Soror Dolorosa - Blind Scenes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9u8uja7jvTM Alcest - Souvenirs d'un autre monde http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTM9x-fEMwo and Blouse's S/T LP
That moment you mention on the album is definitely well placed, it's like a door opening. So many great moments on that album.
Drive-By Truckers - The Dirty South My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves
