Last week's thread. Attendance was down (still a lot of music, though). I think this may have been because of the lack of a #music tag, so in future I'm going to tag these #music and let someone else add the #weeklymusicthread tag for optimal exposure.
My rec for the week is Great Expectations, first track from The '59 Sound, a 2008 album by The Gaslight Anthem. Gaslight's my favorite group from the last decade, and I've been listening to their stuff while I worked all night, so.
Bonus share, since The Neville Brothers came up in last week's thread -- You Think You're So Smart, sung unapproachably by Aaron Neville, one of the great R&B oldies.
I recently made a post about this, but I've been listening to a ton of Astronautalis lately, he's a great hip-hop artist. Outside of that, Joy Formidable recently released a new album so I've been going back and listening to all of their music. It's pretty good arena-sized Indie Rock with a female lead singer and guitarist. They have a really big sound. I just got done interviewing Astronautalis and watching him do a studio session, he's a very down to Earth kind of guy, as is the rest of his band. Great guys, I'm glad they're starting to get more popular.
You interview him in Minnesota or somewhere on tour? He's from Jacksonville but he's based out of Minneapolis now, I first heard of him a couple years ago when he had a feature on a POS track. Been digging him for awhile, he's got a food flow and whoever does his production knows how to make some solid beats.
I interviewed him during his tour with Why? (who my roommate interviewed earlier in the day). He's working on a new album, and said POS has been working on it with him. He actually played a rough version of a new song last night, and it was killer! I have high hopes for this album.
Nice. It's good to know he's still collaborating with POS. He's done a couple tracks with him in the past and I always liked them together.
He's an incredibly intelligent and talented guy, all of his answers were above and beyond anything I could have hoped for. I can send you a link where you can stream our broadcast of the interview and session when we air it, if you'd like.
Miles Davis - Blue In Green This man deserved all the fame he received. He was more than the best trumpeter around. He was also tied (IMO) as the best musician with Coltrane. His time feel was always impeccable, whether playing insane bebop lines or simply a whole note.
Thanks for sharing. This would be perfect to listen to while drinking coffee on a rainy day.
Since there's no electronic music here, I'll share my piece. Recently, I've been getting back into my IDM groove and deeper into my understanding of trip-hop. This week, I've been really enjoying Emancipator and Future Sound of London's ISDN. From the trip-hop catalog, I've most enjoyed Massive Attack's Blue Lines and Art of Noise's The Seduction of Claude Debussy. I'm going to let this IDM and trip-hop settle for a bit before I dive into the aggressively experimental with Autechre.
Thanks! I'm pretty much anti cover. Almost across the board. Rarely do I hear one that doesn't make me want to shut it down and hurry to listen to the original instead. That Ashes to Ashes cover really moves me though. But Uwe Schmidt isn't exactly run of the mill either. He's an incredibly prolific artist having released music on over 60 aliases.
I would barely call that a cover, though. I'm with you, few and far between are the songs that have been improved upon by those who didn't write them. I think there are either two or three covers in the entirety of Rolling Stone's 500 greatest songs list.
With the recent events in LA, I've been remembering the context. Body Count - Cop Killer, NWA - Fuck The Police, The Dead Kennedys - California Uber Alles (disregard the video), and most importantly, Lil B - Police and... (VERY #RARE AND #BASED VIDEO). Other than that, I've been working through the awesome comments on my post about weird music here.
OK, metal has no representation here, and this is what I've been listening to. It's definitely not your typical stuff, and isn't quite well known. Electric Wizard - Return Trip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXpFV9sW2bI Electric Wizard is the essence of Doom with guitars so down-tuned, the strings hang off the guitar and can be used to fire arrows. High On Fire - Devilution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=euALIidJYsA High On Fire is the complete package with intense vocals, driving rhythms, and overall listenability. More 'casual' listeners will find this approachable rather than the expected onslaught of guitars and screaming that usually comes with the territory. Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats - I'll Cut You Down: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSpsffboOAc Moving back to the 60's, this is more like rock today, but the dark edge and disturbing vocals make it more the choice of the metal fan than any 60s metal listener. Elder - Hexe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y48mDuY8rI0 A symphony of darkness. This song is lengthy, like a journey into some hopeless and dark abyss. Listen to it. This is stuff I wrote my Master's Dissertation to, in addition to baroque classical. Sometimes you need a little darkness and to behold the apathy of the universe to trudge forward.
This week for various reasons, I've listened to: Kraftwerk: Autobahn Discovery -Swing Tree The Velvet Underground -Loaded Herman's Hermits -No Milk Today Kaki King - Can Anyone Who Has Heard This Music Really Be A Bad Person? -thanks cauliflower Belle & Sebastian Been working on the next #tngpodcast and some of these songs are in it so I've been hearing them over and over... flagamuffin, I once saw Aaron Neville and his brothers live opening up for Joe Cocker. He's a cheese ball but he is a talented cheese ball.
The Velvet Underground, solid recommendation there. Great list.
Discovery was such a sweet project. It was the keyboardist from Vampire Weekend and the vocals from the lead of Ra Ra Riot that did that whole album, really hope they do another one. The song Orange Shirt on there is amazing.
For anyone unfamiliar, here is the discovery artwork I was praising: Also, I failed to mention two other songs I've been listening to a LOT the last few days. The first is from Ace Frehley of Kiss -Forget what you think about Kiss, this song "New York Groove", is actually pretty bad ass. The second song if from my friend Jonas. We started challenging one another to record a song every couple of weeks to share with one another. Here is his from this week. He has only just begun writing full songs and I am pretty damned impressed. He plays all of the instruments.
My daughter (2 year old) loves when I put that record on. We dance all over the living room. Lots of great songs on it. A very "Vampire Weekend" feel. Awesome album art too.
I haven't listened to too much new music this week. However, I have really been enjoying the track Sunshine by Atmosphere.
Atmosphere is so good, and that's a great track of his. You should check out the guy I posted in this thread, Astronautalis. If you like Atmosphere you'll probably like him as well.
Thanks for the rec, that was the first artist I checked out in this thread!
Safar Barlik - PasPourMoi is a lovely bit of chillwave that has really captured me and has caused me to dive in to a bunch of other lovely Lebanese stuff I'd never heard of before like Funny Death (shoegaze) and Lumi (electropop) as well as revisiting one of my old favourites, Ibrahim Maalouf.
The rest of that Safar Barlik EP is absolutely great as well, definitely give it a listen if you have the time and appropriate mood.
Saw them last night! Make sure to check out Astronautalis too. But Why? put on such a great show, despite some technical difficulties throughout their set. Yoni Wolf has a great stage presence, and is hilarious.
Have you heard Nick Cave's cover of helpless? Not such a departure, but it's a great cover all the same:
My Last.fm is great for this reason. Alright The Underachievers just released their first mixtape and it's pretty fucking good. Flying Lotus signed them into his label after listening to the song I linked up.
New My Bloody Valentine - M B V was better than I expected. I must admit I'm not the biggest shoegaze fan but I really liked this.
DANGERDOOM not particularly new, but I've been listening to this awesome album non stop.
Mount Kimbie!! I'm happy I found this album. I didn't expect it to like it as much because my friend told me it was better than an artist I love, but yeah it's pretty good.
Dilute Math Rock chill stuff.
I'm a slight shoegaze and postrock fan, and I found M B V incredibly disappointing. The immense hype from MBV fans might have contributed to my unmet expectations, but I was left entirely underwhelmed. Not a single song seemed to have any dynamic range or musical progression. Each track was just 5-6 minutes of distorted meh.
Yeah, it all depends wether you like shoegaze or not. But yeah check it out it may become a big deal since its their first album in like 20 years. Yeah totally underachievers have good beats, good flow, and good rhymes. I have been listening a lot right now.
Also, for you Spotify users I'm gunna throw some of the music found in these threads in here so I can have a random selection at work. Feel free to add whatever. When mentioning full albums/artists I'll probably just pick a few of the ones with the highest popularity. http://open.spotify.com/user/insomniasexx/playlist/2P9GgsMOW...
I'm still in love with Sail but between having it on my Spotify starred and the radio here recently adding it to their main list, I've over listened. Then I was watching some redbull video and discovered the dubstep-y version. Pretty sick.
I can get pretty hipster on AWOL. A couple years ago I was at Stubbs Austin for three-dollar Thursdays or whatever the hell the equivalent is, trying to see White Denim or Bright Light or someone, and AWOL was on the bill opening. Had never heard of them but after they played their EP I didn't even stay for the second group, I was so blown away. Motherfucker live is something else.
I just got into AWOL this week and ended up purchasing their album. Sail drew me in, but the rest of the album is pretty great too. That's actually what I was going to post this week, but it's already here so no need! :)
I can imagine. I saw Battles live in Sydney and I have never seen them before and I was completely blown away. The sound is pretty shit on this video but I was at this show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvjlW666MTk Here's the non-live version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpGp-22t0lU The bass live was just penetrating. I was so into it. When I got home and listened to it on Spotify I was disappointed. Live is indeed something else.
I've been listening to Die Antwoord; I don't go in for hip hop much but they caught my attention.
Really been into Neutral Milk Hotel lately. On The Aeroplane Over The Sea has been on my replay list for a week now.
Cordelia's Dad. All the tracks from this album are good, but I particularly like 09-The Dying Californian.
I know I'm a little late to the game on Macklemore... but his albums is dope, and I can't get this song out of my head. I realize this song is pretty mainstream by now so most people have already heard of it (rightfully so), but if not, enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK8mJJJvaes also and older track from him... (skip to 1:20 if you wanna skip the skit)
